There is no car made anywhere in the world, by any manufacturer, that will hold up to rear-ending a semi trailer (HGV trailer, as you call it. The Malibu is actually a rather safe mid-size car. The same result would happen if you did this test with the much larger, German-engineered S-class Mercedes, too. The reson this can occur, is there is up to a 13' (approx 4 meters) of overhang (which exists for other reasons) before encountering anything solid (which is the adjustable rear axle assembly of the trailer. The dock bumper (structure below the cargo doors is just made for bumping a loading dock, and is not designed to take an impact from a vehicle, at any significant speed above a slow crawl. It is not built to withstand a collision, however newer trailers are slightly better at preventing the car from -submarining- under the trailer. if you freeze the dual sideview, you can some subtle structural changes made to the dock bumper that helps prevent a car from diving under. You can see the larger structural gussets linking between the floor structure, and the safer dock bumper in the lower frame, that doesn't exist in the unsupported one seen in the top frame.

find a Crash test on a 1991 Acura Integra. I crashed one on Highway in USA in the Sate of Kentucky traving on bridge over to Ohio (past the last exit i shoud have took to go home. but i kept trying to top my car out: ( wish i didnt) I was going 121+ MPH when i mad a left hand bend on the road (not much but enough ) that threw the rear end / kicked the rear end out after running over a seem in te road on tis hiighway (i didnt now at the time) but i wnt in to a slide and crashed into the concrete median NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE! YES TWICE, the front driverside hit the wall. bounced off spun the car to thr rigght then the rear driver side hit the concrete wall/median. then slid to the right at least about 100+feet? or so. my driver door was stuck shut and could not get out. my pass was able to open the pass side door and had to get out that side. bu tthe car was gone/totaled: ( I miss that car to this day.

This is a huge misconception in the way pop culture would have us believe -the heavier the car the safer you are- make believe garbage it also does not help when people are like myself blinded by nostalgia when in real life they're is no -perfect car- that includes American cars as well the only reason cars are better today is the way they're designed for example if you got into a high speed crash every car is gonna get damaged obviously but the design makes cars give way to avoid an engine block sitting in you're lap and clearly we saw the 1959 bel air (amazing body btw) the whole roof of the driver seat caved in it don't take an education to figure out that you would've died instantly a freaking kindergarten kid can easily figure that out w/o a calculator

Regarding the Chevy Malibu: People tend to think that old cars were built massively and -robust- while in fact it was quite the opposite. The steel quality back then was extremely poor (full of air pockets etc) and can't be compared with todays quality standards. Furthermore was the design of the ladder frame very basic with no breaking- and structual rigidity points. It was basicely just a huge chunk of metal with a chassis bolted on.
-weight- per se (mass) is not everything. especially in a crash scenario in which all kinds of physic aspects play a major role.

About the car flipping over, this is a massive risk not -only- because the secondary impact (where and how it lands) but also the fact that whoever will come to rescue will have a tough time to get you out there. I've been an ambulance operator and if the person that had the crash for whatever reason can not get out of the car by him/her-self when the car is not on its wheels, the ambulance operators can't do much until the firefighters will come with their heavy duty tools. This is one of the biggest risk for high ground clearance.

Had a nasty crash as the passenger of a saxo, broke a bunch of ribs and my face opened up so bad I could see my own eyebrow hanging in my vision. (NHS is terrible was left alone in shock for 45 minutes in agony, had to pull myself out the bed with a broken ribs nearly passing out from the pain just to go beg for painkillers while the doctors were all chilling having a laugh) top tip if your gonna have a nasty accident make sure your no where near Yeovil.

Damn! I had a 99 Seicento (sporting - haha anything but. In 2005 a few months after passing my test I was on the Brum inner city ringroad and tried to exit a junction too late, and hit these big yellow plastic blocks that I guess were there for drivers like me at the time. I probably hit about 10-15 mph, it did survive and the damage was nowhere near as bad as this though. That's thanks to the plastic barriers though which took the brunt of the crash.

Just imagine though, how the -New- cars would stand up WITHOUT all the tech that has been (expensively) engineered into them.
Your chances of surviving in one of those would be just about zero.
In those old cars, a low speed crash would usually result in a couple hundred dollars repair bill, where a modern car would be totaled.
If they made cars like they used to, but put all the modern tech in them, it would be a while different story!

I sorta tboned a car with crumple zones in my 1ton pick up no crumple zones I swerved to keep from killing them because of the crumple zones on their car my truck my aluminum rim tore the front end of their car off I drove home and cracked a beer all three in the car went to the hospital and the car was totaled by a aluminum rim if hit them in the side none of them would have survived and I still would have drove home and had a beer

I once crashed a VW Golf2 from the year 1987 with speed around 45km/h into another VW that was parked on the side of the road.
My car barely got any damage and there were no airbags going off. Only seat belt and I just got a little scratch on my elbow.
The parked car got pretty smashed though. I was even able to drive off from the scene after the exchange of insurances.
