New BMW 5 Series review - still the best?

The BMW i5 it has finally arrived! This is the first all-electric version of the iconic 5 Series saloon and sits between the i4 coupe and range-topping i7 limo. While you get a large set of kidney grilles, they are not as intrusive as on the i4 or i7 except for the weirdly placed sensor cover. You ll also see flush door handles, alloy wheels ranging from 19- to 21-inch units and lots of blue flashes to ensure everybody knows it s an electric car. Inside, it s a classic BMW professional, tidy and filled with tech. The German brand has also increased the cabin size to make the already comfortable interior even more accommodating. The boot is practical too. When it comes to the 5 Series, the entry-level uses a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 208hp. When it comes to the i5, the entry-level i40 uses a single motor that puts out 340hp and is equipped with an 82kWh battery pack which comes with a claimed range of up to 361 miles. The range-topping i5 is the M60, which has two motors that combine to put out 601hp. It has the same 82kWh battery pack, which is good for a range of 320 miles. But as with all BMWs, how it drives is just as important so how does the i5 fare when Mat takes it for a spin? Watch the full review here to find out!

I wonder what happened to all of these new BMW cars and especially their new controversial grills, I don't really think this is hideous as much as I expected and thank goodness that the grill isn't so huge like BMW's usual design where they miss completely. But from my opinion I'm not a big fan of the overall design character from this new BMW 5 Series, I really think the old generation of the BMW 5 Series or any other old BMW car generation in general stands out so much compared to the new generation, nonetheless I do like the interior and the technology of it and regardless excellent review as usual Mat.

I wonder what BMW will do with the current i3 when the electric 3-series comes out eventually. Clearly they're dedicated to just naming their cars i7, i5, i4 etc. IMO the current i3 should be renamed i1 och i2 since that car is, and never was, in any way a 3-series car.

I found that with the new BMWs the design in the pictures or on videos vs the reality seems completely different. For example in case of iX - on video = complete abomination vs in reality = wonderful, modern, striking. I think it might be the same with the 5series.

Yeah, Mercedes is going too far with the fake exhausts. At least Audi is starting to learn its lesson since the introduction of the facelifted Q8 (yes, it has REAL exhaust tips unlike the pre-facelift model.

Grill is coming back to humanity again. Still not a fan of grill stretch on the bonnet. They could have just made it like the previous 5 series; that still stands as one of the best looking BMWs ever.

interior screens look like a slot machine and only 200 hp on thermal engine. they ruined the 5 series. edit: the new 5 series screams shrinkflation all over it in order to push an electric motor

Fun Fact: Both new 5 series & i5 sold in China will get the same flat-screen from new 7 series in the backseat as well as those screens on the door It's an specs only exists in Chinese market

Thought I wouldn t like it until I watched this, and it honestly looks much better. The old design still seems mire traditional and honestly better looking but I know this will grow on me more
reply

I m not a bmw guy but the previous two gens 5 series were really good looking unlike this one. And the cluster looks like someone just stuck a screen on the dash, no attention to detail.
reply

I don't think BMW will make anything as good looking as their F series cars. It takes a time to get used to their G series, but even then. I don't think they're as good as the F series.

BMW on their way to create the most hideous modern grilles known to man.
They somehow nail the back of the car, but f up the front. I dont get it and i think neither the designers do.

Sweet car
Only Mat what fake exhaust is there on a Mercedes EV?
You are thinking of the surrounds on hybrid and ice cars. Fair but you said that wile comparing a BMW EV to Merc.

reply

2: 05 why does everyone always go on about the m4 grill the m4 looks way better than this like it looks better here than when it was first released but its still pretty hideous
reply

This just doesn't look expensive it's not too bad but c'mon. when you spend this much on a car you don't want it to look like an economy car with some extra LEDs
reply

The people in BMW are trying to ruin this brand heritage. Everyone knows how a BMW looks like and now this crap looks like a hyundai and toyota mix
RIP BMW

reply

Looks utter crap, And I'm a Bmw fan. The new designer needs to be put in a dark room and interrogated to ask who sent him to sabotage the company
reply

It looks as if it were made of big metal pannels? And also flat-piano-black material at the front? Externally at least, a car without substance.
reply

I don't know man, those plastic looking side skirts make it look somewhat cheap in my opinion. The same goes for the back bumper.
reply

Can we at LEAST put the screens into a traditional gauge cluster shape? Who was the genius to just slap screens and call it a day?
reply

I'm curious to see the wagon of this 5 series, the back design might looks better with that rearlight on wagon than on sedan
