New Range Rover Velar review: Better than the Germans?

It s a step down from the full-blown Range Rover, and Mat s about to find out if it s worth the 54, 000 starting price. When it comes to the design, there are several updates over the previous edition. Around the back, the Land Rover badge has been replaced by big Range Rover lettering across the back. There are also new 3D effect taillights, as well as an updated bumper. Along the side, you ll find a choice of new alloy designs, and on this car we have the 2-tone effect design thanks to the black roof. Up top, there are a couple of new design elements, including new headlights, a new grille, and an updated bumper. Step inside, and there s been a big change with the centre console. Gone is the second screen and physical climate control buttons - they ve all been removed and that functionality added to the infotainment system. In their place Is nothing! All you ll find is a large gear selector surrounded by silver plastic. When it comes to the actual infotainment screen, it s been updated, but it s not the most intuitive system. There are buttons on the steering wheel to manage the digital dials, but the menu can be a bit convoluted. Thankfully though the general design of the interior is nice, with lots of soft-touch materials throughout. When it comes to engines, there are a couple to choose from. If you want a diesel you can choose either a 2-litre turbo or a 3-litre with 200hp or 300hp respectively, and if you just want petrol there s a 2-litre turbo or a 3-litre six-cylinder with 250hp and 400hp. All these cars come with an 8-speed automatic and four-wheel drive. There s also a hybrid available, which comes with a 2-litre turbo petrol and an electric motor that can put down 400hp. So what do you think, is it worth the 54, 000 price tag? Especially when you consider this can rise to almost 80, 000 for the top-of-the-range model! You ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

We need a review about the Land Rover/Range Rover s reliability issues.
Maybe with statistics and interview with some mechanichs or people from Land Rover ( such as the AMG guys.
I have owned 3 Freelanders and 1 Disco. Sport with 1. 8 liters engine ( 2004), 2. 2 liters diese, 2. 0 liter gasoline with 240 hp and 2. 0 ingenium diesel with 180 hp and each car gave me headache with different issues.
Each time, I thought - well, they must have figured it out yet I was wrong.

This car is hideous. It looks like a melted soapbar model of what a JLR vehicle should look like. It has no buttons. on a car which should be operated using gloves, if it was used in the way it should be. It now offers less than any car should in its class and range, and it is a poser's machine. I can't really understand the continual love-in for these vehicles. I haven't even mentioned reliability yet. Would never, ever buy, even with someone else's money.

I really don't understand why auto makers go out of their way to make the driver experience so awful by removing physical buttons & controls and using haptic buttons. While not everything needs to be a button or dial, stuff like aircon, defogging, volume absolutely should be. Stuff that is used frequently should not be buried in a touch screen when it is clearly not safe for a driver to take their eyes off the road to find and use it.

I still don't understand the complaints with touch screen climate controls. I think I touch mine like once a month, if that. It's set at the temperature I like and left on auto. The rest of the stuff is the sort of stuff you deal with prior to setting off anyway, such as front/rear defog. I'm probs in the minority here, but I really don't mind it. Oh well, each to their own.

i never understand how can some1 buy this piece of S for this price. They even never able to developed an Engine. started with BMWs engine early time and now FORD & co. The ONLY thing they build tho is Electric system which they always perfectly FAIL. In passed 7 or 9 mounths i alone saw several of such beautis JUST STOP mid of the Road.

Totally agree about the interior update, it s not good. It looks and feels more like a cost cutting change than anything else. Cheap plastics, bland design and no cup holder covers at key touch points for both driver and passenger = poor. I went to my local dealer to check out for my next car, but I m pretty disappointed.

I do you find trying to use a screen whilst driving very difficult and rather distracting. Not as safe as just putting your finger down to find a button that you generally know exactly where it is. At 30MPH in 2 seconds you will have travel 27 meters (90 feet) and it may take you that long to adjust the temperature!

Not a fan of the interior too much screen and minimalist type design which is a front for saving money. Landrovers even in a luxury version were a little utilitarian. The design and ride is enough of a departure from the flagship Range Rover don t sacrifice interior functionality too

I though Mat said the next upload is going to be another really cool cybertruck drag race after the last drag race? All good, I am happy to see another regular car get reviewed and it actually be a great one as well. Save the not want to miss video for Saturday. Looking forward!

For a car going up to 80 grand, that interior frankly is insulting. the only thing it's saying is that Land Rover has zero respect for their paying customers, and proving it by selling them premium cars with interiors that a Peugeot 206 owner would have been ashamed of.

Seems to be a trend that every Range Rover model has a very crappy infotainment system. It makes these cars a never touch for me coz interaction with the vehicle should not be a test of patience no mater how nice the vehicle looks, reminds me of Aston Martin info systems as well
reply

I find it funny how there's the notion that big cars need big wheels to fill up the arches, when in fact big rims only became a thing because performance cars need bigger brakes, and those don't fit in small rims. That 21 rear wheel with those tiny brakes look awkward.
reply

Why can t car manufacturers design an integrated screen into the dashboard? You d be forgiven for assuming there was some law of car physics that means dashboards need to remain the same shape as pre-touchscreen, therefore requiring screens to be bolted on top.

Those new USB's are perfectly placed for EVERYONE who has a 1m long cable that comes with phones / tablets and saves the cable from getting pulled out by feet or not being long enough. Maybe start testing things rather than assuming things eh Matt?
reply

First it was Audi with a lazy update to the Q8 now it's Land Rover with a worse infotainment system than the previous model.
JLR seems to just be slapping that screen on all their models now, aa the lastest Jugaur models have them as well.

In my XF, I put the wipers into service mode to change the blades, same procedure as on the Velar there, unaware that there's a time limit. Of course the arms slammed down and smashed the windscreen. Not the handiest of features I must say
reply

Another great review! But, your quote I can't even remember where it is regarding the infotainment system, says it all for me. The complex useability and experience would be a huge 'No' for me and probably many others looking to upgrade.
reply

Honestly what a pile of rubbish. Another cheaply made JLR where the interior is a downgrade and the exterior is identical. If you want an overpriced, unreliable, underpowered and impossible to insure 4x4 this is perfect.
reply

Was thinking about buying one but saw they removed the buttons and that material on the dash is horrible to touch, should have left the old interior, which was so much nicer, BIG DOWNGRADE, WONT BE BUYING
reply

Depreciation of Range Rovers is horrific at the moment. That alone would put me off buying one with my own money, but might be okay if you re a company car driver as your company will feel the pain!
