WHEELS How They Work formdoggie5: You guys missed a lot on the subject here: -when light small is good but why you don't want them on your everyday driver (there's a reason why touring class cars generally have a 3klbs weight)-carbon fiber rims are on 60k and below cars now, benefits/cons-how turning actually works from a fixed point (you actually turn from your rear tires even though your front tires are the ones you change direction on)-load bearing ratings and their variance and why you may need a high weight rim even in a relatively light weight car-why heavy rims have many benefits on suspensions with a RTC bias that resists upward forcesAlso--wheels are tires+rims so you missed out on the entire rubber part and that's a 30 minute video on it's own. I generally love everything you do, and at least 30ish of your subs are from me saying no less, but this seemed like a fairly lazy video compared to the normally high quality videos you do.

Question: If smaller wheels are easier for handling, then why aren't we using even smaller wheels for race cars? Isn't there some kind of drawback towards having smaller wheels, like, say, how easily they can wear out? Another question: Why don't we have more than 4 wheels on our race cars? Wouldn't more wheels add more traction to our cars, allowing for faster acceleration and better handling, even if it might come at the cost of more weight, and more energy needed to spin those extra wheels? Edit: Perhaps an alternative towards having more wheels would be to have wider wheels, though wouldn't that provide more drag?

My car comes with 17 wheels, and Ive heard of people who do a lot of longer distance highway driving get 19 wheels because theyre more fuel efficient on the highway. Like Bart said with rotational inertia, it makes sense that if you let off the gas at 70mph, itll take the 19s longer to slow down, but more gas to get going. Does anyone know if this practice (buying larger rims for highway efficiency) is true and enough of a difference to invest in?

In all seriousness, aren't bigger wheels better because they have a thinner tire wall and therefore are stiffer, resulting in better traction on the track (or smooth roads in general? I feel like you missed that when saying not to get big wheels if you want better performance. It's a trade-off ya? It's not like you can get any road-legal high performance car below 18s or 19s anyway, and i think theres a reason for that beyond aesthetics.

Clarify: wen u have a larger rim u have more distance then a smaller wheel right, so at what point does the size of the wheel slow u down compared to the increased weight of a bigger wheel and everything in between? U feel?

I don't care what anyone says, that ice skater example put rotational inertia into PERFECT perspective lmao. It all makes sense now, also the audio clip of that guy saying boo you suck never ever gets old lmao.

I call them rims if and only if they do not have a tire mounted. If they do, then they are wheels. The way I see it, you have the tire and the rim that the tire is mounted on. Putting them together you get a wheel.

That's conservation on momentum and in case of rotation it is angular momentum which is conserved. So when ice-skater pull his/her arms in, it conserves angular momentum. Kinetic energy increases.

when he said don't say rims, people don't say rims, people say wheels. I shed a tear, because someone finally said it. I hear car guys even saying rims; they're not rims they're wheel for petes sake.

Are you speaking to toddlers? Maybe take it down just a bit. I'm exhausted from you high level of enthusiasm and have to bail about a third of the way thru. Good topics tho.
