Ford Thunderbird was meant to be the Ford Motor Company's answer to the Chevy Corvette. From Square Birds to Bullet Birds to Aero Birds to Retro Birds, this American icon got bigger and bigger (literally) and even shared the same platform as the Foxbody Mustang! So take flight with James Pumphrey as we discover how it all happened and meet the people who shaped it into a National Treasure. Except this one we don t have to steal from the Decoration of Inner Pendants!

I ve always loved the T-bird platform ever since I got to sit in a 1960 during my freshman year of high school. Fast forward 7 years and I finally actualized my dream of owning one when I picked up a near immaculate 2003, triple red Thunderbird, with only 29, 000 miles on her. A couple grand in preventative maintenance later with some bolt on upgrades on the side and I absolutely adore this car. I don t have the money required to pick up a 57 at 22 but these retro birds have kinda bottomed out depreciation wise, and considering the low production amount ( 68, 000 over 4 years) they re becoming more of a collector s item. I can t go to work without seeing a Mustang in the road but I can count on one hand all the other Thunderbirds in my area. There s great heritage behind the car and I constantly get compliments from people wherever I go, not to mention you get a feeling of being in a 50s roadster without actually driving one. Overall I think they get somewhat of a bad rep and I m likely one of the youngest owners in the country, but I intend to keep my bird in flight and on the road for as long as feasibly possible.

The Retro Birds from the early 2000s were a huge missed opportunity. Ford totally failed on that design. They simply tried to cash in on the Thunderbird's heritage rather than make a good car that people wanted. They ignored the market and they paid for it. I had a 1992 Thunderbird LX that was unremarkable, but still a comfortable and reliable car.

YAAAAAAAYYY an up to speed on my actual car! I have a 1966 Thunderbird and I love it! I daily drove it for a year because I like it so much. Now that I've rebuilt the engine to make it like new again, I plan to keep on dailying it. T-birds are fun: )

I had a mint 1976 Ford Thunderbird. It was silver with a red interior and a 460 CI. She was beautiful: ( I still hate myself for only selling it for 2, 100. One of my biggest regrets for sure.

James thank you soooooo much bro, had a 91 super coupe in high school. Still one of my all time faves. SC's never get any love. Used to kill stangs and maros.

never thought i'd enjoy watching an almost insane man climbing an endless ladder while advertising about motor oil and talking to eagles which sound like crows

My Uncle had an 88 turbo thunderbird in black. Still one of my favorite cars I ve seen. I don t know why but I could see an SUV thunderbird doing well.

Hey James you re pouring it upside down. If you pour it the other way it allows air to replace the oil thus allowing for smooth no glug glug pour.
