If you're performing this on an NA Miata as well and intending to keep the stock belts, you can remove the patching on the lower end of the seat belt to prevent the seat belt from adding that extra length during an accident. Get a thread remover from a craft store and carefully remove the stitching. It's under the weird cloth pouch near the bottom mount, you'll need to remove stitching to get it off. If you don't remove this and keep stock belts, an accident could lead to it breaking away and getting your head cracked open. Normally it would break and add extra length to let you go into the airbag but with no airbag, it lets you get personal with your aftermarket wheel in ways you didn't want to. Please note now that you can have chest compressions because of this but it's better than a cracked head if you must remove the airbag. The NB Miata uses a crush reel and the reel itself breaks to add extra length. You can get NA seat belts and bolt them in place and remove the patch I mentioned but by then you should've just put in a harness.

WARNING be careful whem doing this mod, the mx5 is safe to remove airbag components after the battery is disconnected, however many brands and different models of vehicles within a brand have different procedures, Some you have to leave the battery disconnected for up to a hour so the system completly discharges of all electric thats been stored in capacitors and such, Personally after disconnecting the battery i turn the hazard light switch on and crank the ignition to the start position to try and disperse any electric that may be hiding within the components of the car,

I'd be careful using a racing harness on public roads. They are designed to be used with a helmet and neck brace accompanying them, and if you only use a harness without a helmet and neck brace, the only thing that has freedom to move is your neck, and in a collision, that can cause major whiplash, and be even less safe than a 3 point seat belt. Those give more freedom for your body to move around, and usually are more safe on public roads, where you most likely won't be using a helmet and neck brace.

Safety alert for all who dont live in third world country like the person in the video If you live in a first world country. For example in Finland (which is in Europe) you cant change the steering wheel to one without an airbag unless there have been models of that car with out one. And when you change the steering wheel to one with out airbag you have to get it inspected by a person who has authoroty from the goverment to do so. And also the diameter of the steering wheel is often regulated.

Unless you are wearing a head and neck restraining device that inherently requires a helmet, this mod is much more unsafe than OEM equipment. Why is it so hard to understand that aftermarket steering wheel that disables the airbag, roll cage/roll bar with harness bar, racing seat and 5/6 point harness is ONE investment and should be purchased as a system? You only have one neck and spending the money beats being paralyzed for the rest of your life.

I don't know if this car is exception, but usually you should wait 10 minutes after disconnecting the battery, before you remove the airbag. Most cars usually have airbags that can hold a charge for 10 minutes just in case there's an accident that damaged the connection to the battery, so the airbag will still have power and will still deploy. But I don't know when that feature was implemented. This Miata might be too old.

Disconnecting the battery is often times not enough to disable the airbag. There are capacitors in the car holding charge for up to even a couple hours after the battery is disconnected to ensure the airbag works in the event the battery is disconnected in a crash. Also the airbag can trigger off of the most minimal volatage. So its best to wait an hour to be safe if your going to be disconnecting it.

Had a air bag go off when I was removing my wheel at 16 Almost knocked me out, as my ears are ringing and I cant see with a horrible tast burned into my tast buds and the smelly powedery gas coming from my car and face. I got a warning from my frount office lady for working on my car and the loud noise xD nice lady

If I fit better inside of a Miata I would have definitely done a steering wheel swap. But I would have needed more work than just a new steering wheel. New seats, new wheel, so much money into a Miata that could have been spent on a bigger car. Oh well, I'm happy with my 350z

Hot take: buy a wheel that isnt suede or alcantara. It mats down when you use it and looks/ feels like slippery garbage if you dont use gloves while driving. I have a suede wheel on my sim rig and no a mount of cleaning will ever revive the original look and feel.
