Here in Germany the Jetta (or the Sedan versions of compact hatchbacks in general) are really not popular and have the image, that only retirees buy it. Which also means that you can get cheap used Jettas in very good conditions (well-kept and with low milage. In the past Volkswagen tried to change that image by changing the name: The Golf 3 based car was not called Jetta anymore here but Vento. But that doesn't work, so the name Vento again was stigmatized. So with the Golf 4 the sedan was called Bora (they tried to compete against BMW 3 series and there was even a Golf station wagon and a Bora station wagon, although they were the same cars with with a different front design. But that also didn't work as they hoped. Finally they went back to Jetta. In the US it was always the Jetta because it was popular there.

Part of the reason besides SUV popularity that the Jetta is on a decline has to do with VW s reputation after Dieselgate and the reduced availability of engine options in products, like was mentioned. Additionally, the Jetta like other VW products just feels BLAH now. I recall many VW cars in the 2000s actually feeling like discount Audis AND they had all the flexibility of engine options. The Passat from the late 2000s was a nice ride, but the new one is just OK. Plus now, you can only get one or two engines and VWs just as mainstream as any other vehicle out there. I expected the new Jetta and Atlas Cross Sport to feel like a discount A3 and Q5, but in reality, they re no more impressive than something like a Corolla or a new Ford Edge, but more expensive.

New VWs tend to be unreliable. Engines have problems with carbon buildup and there are electronics issues. And, of course, depreciation on this car will be horrendous. If you really want to drive one, then lease it, so that you don't get stuck trying to maintain it or sell it off warranty. If you want to buy, than consider a Toyota, Mazda or Honda (or maybe a used Lexus) instead. Hyundais are improving now too and are also worth a look.

Jetta simply does not look premium anymore by the looks. The design language is very generic now. The front grill looks no different then others. the back is nothing exciting. Other cars from Honda, Toyota and even Hyundai are having so much better designs. In world where almost all car manufactures are kind of baselining the comfort and features, design is what now differentiating them. Jetta simply no different.

I'm using very good headphones, and the driving experience is just. intense. Your voice sounds like you're right next to me, but the road noise is unusually. big. And bassy. Is it the tires? Not that it has to do with this car, but what is the deal with white cars? Staying cool in San Diego sun? I would never buy a white car in my life. Time to get out a few thousand tiny bottles of Citadel model paints.

The first mistake was the cheapening of the nameplate. IN 2015, They tried to compete with Toyota and Honda Accord. Problem, Accord and Camry drivers dont drive VW's. and the damage was done. The difference between the Mark 4 and 5 Jetta's and the Mark 6 is astounding. Cheap Cheap Cheap. Look at that trunk! Goose hinges? Really? That SCREAMS cheap!

I have a 2014 Jetta TDI and I think it s a dream to drive! It handles very well at Phoenix highway speeds ( 75-85 mph, it has really nicely weighted steering and it s very quiet inside! Also, it s quick when you need it to be! I think they ve really watered down the new Jetta, although I would still purchase even the new Jetta

You'd also think the Jetta would get the new VAG gear stick; it's a little nub on the new Golf, and this looks like the new redone interior, but keeps the same old style gear shifter. It also keeps the legacy climate controls and rest of the centre console. Perhaps as it's just not a popular model like the Golf, Polo et cetera.

So odd that the US misses out on great compacts like the Renault Megane RS, Peugeot 308, 508 et cetera. And the US has much higher quality petrol than here down unda, which means you could have some amazing engines that we can't get. And you are right about the Golf. Tons here, but the Jetta is a massive rarity on our roads.

I had a mk3 golf from 92 in the highest trimline, packed with everything except ac and electric windows. Even that one had blank spaces everywhere. The good thing about this is that if vw decides to integrate new buttons for new features they have the space and dont need to improvise.
