The E30 BMW M3 is a wonderful performance car -- and today I'm reviewing the E30 M3, and I'm going to show you all around it. First I'll show you the quirks and features of the E30 M3, then I'll drive the original BMW M3 and show you what it's like on the road

I was a teenager when that car was new, and I will say THIS about the speakers being so look at me! and not being hidden or incorporated into the interior, giving a smoother appearance: factory sound systems in almost all cars were atrocious throughout my childhood. When I say most, I personally never had the luxury of being in a single car that had a decent sounding factory stereo until the mid 80s. In my experience, it was an incredibly common thing, and a point of pride, for people to rip out their factory stereo/speakers, and replace them with nice sounding aftermarket equipment. Once that was done, the aftermarket speaker grilles, which were usually higher quality speakers, were visible on the top of the rear deck, where, in most cars, the factory speakers had no visible grille. When someone bought a car, new or used, younger people would immediately look to see if the stereo and speakers had been upgraded. If not, their was a, oh, that s too bad or maybe even some teasing, followed by, what brand are you upgrading to? I sometimes found my mulleted self looking in the rear deck of cars I randomly walked past in parking lots to see what people had. I believe speaker companies were aware that younger people were impressed by upgrades, and since the grille was going to be exposed (for mounting purposes, they decided to make them more eye catching for free advertising. Looks like BMW really wanted to make theirs look extra interesting to passengers and passers by, because as soon as I saw those, my inner teenager was like, those look cool! And then I started coughing and realized I am old and don t feel too good, and that the good old days are gone. Also, when the trunk is opened, the rear of the car reminds me of a late 70s Corolla.

Doug, you did not understand the check control. ( no offence).
1. the 3, 5, 6, 7 Series after 81 hat a so called active check control. That means, the lamps, Oil, coolant and washerfluid level are checked automatically. You dont have to press a button
2. the brake light is checked by pressing the brake pedal. Until the brake lights are checked the check light is flashing and the lamp for brake light is illuminated in the check control panel. After pressing the brake pedal the check goes out and the lamp in the check control panel is switched off. That means until you pres the brake pedal the brake lights are officially out of order.
3. if a lamp or fluid level is not ok, the check light is flashing too and the corresponding lamp in the check control panel is illuminated
4. to make sure that all lamps in the check control panel are working and are able to show you whats wrong when the check light is flashing you press the check button. Then all lamps there are illuminated.
5. to turn off the flashing light so that its not flashing during driving all the time, you press the check button an the check control panel. The lamp in the check control corresponding to the failure stays on.
so, tell me how often I wrote check in this comment: -D
To the Board Computer. There is a Code button. With the code button and the 1000, 100, 10, 1 buttons you can set a 4 digit code as a anti thief protection when you park the car. Of someone tries to start the car with active code then the horn is activated.
If you have further questions please ask me; -)

Most E30 enthusiasts aren't even into the E30 M3. They are too valuable to modify and tinker with (ruin) these days, you can pick between sending your kid to college or rebuilding the motor. They are gutless when not thrashed on and they don't have the great inline 6 sound from the M20 motor in the regular E30 3 series. People often end up swapping in later model M3 motors, or 2JZ's. Then whats the point in the M3, just get a regular plain jane E30. They have devolved from being drivers cars to something old guys lock away.

Doug, truly enjoy your videos. I just purchased my 22nd New BMW over the past 30 years. I find it fascinating that in your reviews of 80 s era BMW s which I ve had many. You have neglected one of the best quirks and features. that code button. on my 1987 L7, 1988 M6 and my 1990 750il v12 you could enter a 4 digit number which would prevent the car from starting even with the key. Your friends and family could grab your keys whenever you weren t around to go for a joyride. they ll be SOL unless they could guess the code.

The E30 is the only M3 that is totally different than the regular 3 series.
The engine was made by BMW Motorsport, the body is not the same body, look at the side rear windows, they are not the same as the coupe, not the same Trunk.
The second special thing about the E30 M3 is that the American car is not the same car as the European car. Not the same engine, not the same gear box and much more

E30 M3: the most successful production car in the history. She won EVERYTHING. In the 80ies technology was advanced enuogh to create great cars, but the laws were not yet overprotective. This explain why so many wonderful cars were build in the 80-90ies. Last but not least, styling was much more simple.

This was a state of the art race engine for the street. I've had the chance to ride multiple 325i's in coupe, 4door, including a coupe ix from 1990, and in the 90's - the M3 E46 needed to be in the powerband to keep up with these. I can't imagine how good the 2. 5 M3 must be.

I was in high school when this car came out. It was a head turner then, and still is 30+ years later. The wide body panels made it stand out from other BMWs. I wish they had kept that for subsequent M models. This car was a dream car back then!

An electronic nightmare. Dash used to shut off if you shifted past 4k rpm. Blew fuses and all kinds of crap. 2 dealers services centers and a specialist could not resolve it. Dumped it like the garbage it was. So poorly built it is staggering.

Did you know that there was a BMW 333i but it was for South Africa only, it was a South African equivalent to the M3 since we never got it because of sanctions. South Africa also made a 3. 0 V6 Alfa Romeo GTV also South Africa only.
