So, as a Convertible Dakota owner, a couple things need to be addressed. The actual number is closer to 4, 000, they sold 2, 843 in 1989 and another 1, 013 in 1990, and a final 8 in 1991. All the 89s were Sport models, but in 90 the convertible option was available on any trim level, and by extension with either engine, they sold a handful of 90's with 4 cylinders. And one last thing, when the V8 option became available in 91, they could be ordered that way too. The 91's aren't very well documented but at least one of the 8 has a V8, I've spoken with the guy that has it a few times.
I would have offered mine a long time ago but it's not it very good shape and it's modified. Has a V8 and a manual swap.

I remember seeing a convertible pick-up truck in an American film some time in the late eighties or early nineties. I thought it was in Midnight Run, but that film was released in 1988 so the years don't add up. The pick-up was only shown very briefly in the background, when the characters were crossing the street or walking along or something. Anyway, I found it a very fascinating vehicle, and to this day it's my favourite pick-up body style: single cab, convertible and I believe the one from the film looked quite work spec.

I bought a Dodge Dakota convertible new off the showroom floor in 1990. It was the 4 cylinder manual transmission. I once towed a small camper with it through the mountain pass between Santa Cruz and San Jose and needless to say it was pathetic and I was a hazard to other traffic. The Army shipped it free to Hawaii where it was fun to drive during my 3 year tour there. We sold it in Hawaii. I would love to have another but with retirement finances i will need a real bargain.

Mini trucks were hugely popular in SoCal in the late 80's, there were a ton of aftermarket companies making DIY convertible tops for all the major mini truck brands back then. I think Dodge saw an opportunity to cash in on this trend but was a little too late to the party.

Guess most people, rightly so, forgot about the mini truck craze of late '80s - early '90s. Where the owners were lowering the truck, adding outrageous sound systems and then CHOPPING OFF THE ROOF. Most had either a target roof or a removable roof. Horrible times then.

Someone owned one of those near my house when I was a teenager it was red also. I always assumed they had it done custom. I NEVER would ve guessed it came like that from factory lol. I gotta say though, that one is pretty cool.

People love Wranglers and Gladiators and Broncos with targa roof panels or vinyl roofs. I don't get why that love for targa trucks or soft-top trucks doesn't translate into a love for convertible trucks.

You have probably never seen a pickup truck try to make a panic stop but you might have seen black marks on concrete that are spaced about 3 feet or so. That is the back wheels coming off the road.

I think the why was a sign of the times. Don't forgot that other companies were doing similar things. Look at the '84 to '89 convertible Toyota 4runners and the Jeep Scrambler CJ-8.
