I sped up to the governer limited on this car at I beleive 140mph and the engine red-lined and even after pulling over the car was stuck in a perpetual red-line. After a few minutes in finally stopped. After driving it to the shop, they checked the oil and it was bone dry. I sold the car to a person at work and he drove it for an additional three years before he traded it in. I have no idea what the rev issue was and was shocked that it could run without oil and last so long.

I own a cosmo 4 door 97 e36 with the Euro engine and baseball Boston leather very rare in Canada its an absolut beast and handles on rails. I've been offered tons of cash almost every single year I've owned it. It looks sounds and performs better that e46 m3 all day long. Love this car and will never sell it. The contour wheels are what you want on these cars. They don't make them like this anymore.

Maybe it is because I am german or because I was born in 1981, but I am surprised that the E36 counts as the other M3. I always thought it was THE M3. The design step from E30 to E36 was huge, and BMW kept the overall shape for further generations. I think it still looks not dated (of coure the details, but the general shape and proportions are still cool.

It should be noted that the US model E36 M3 had a specially-made US-legal engine plus very specific gear ratios on the manual transmission to take advantage of that engine. As a result, up to circa 190 km/h (118 mph, it had the same acceleration as the European M3 with the 285 bhp engine.

excuse me Doug but in what world e36 m3 has more points in daily than e46 m3 - the latter is newer, with more luxury features, its bigger and more comfy to drive, also they are cheaper than e36 and even in your ranking list they are a better car, so price/value ratio is better

The E36 M3, the red headed stepchild in the M3 family. It's only sin was not being as iconic as the E30, not as refined as the E46. I think it's no secret that it's the least favourite M3. It's a shame this generation doesn't get as much love and respect as it deserves.

Lol. garbage. They look aight, but mechanically they're nightmares, inside they feel cheap. Honestly nothing special about any BMW, once it breaks down, most people will sell it because they can't afford the repairs. Do your own research, don't believe me.

The sleeper M3. That s why I love it so much and that's also why I prefer the current generation M340i to the G80 M3. Plus M-cross, M-Rain and M-Hurricane are the coolest names to give to interior patterns

As a teenager, I used to work as a lot attendant at a Lincoln-Mercury dealership. Somebody traded one of these in and I got to drive it up to another dealership for a trade and wow - what a fun car.
