Heres Why Disconnecting Your Battery Will Destroy Your Car William Sevier: I have the same meter from Harbor Freight, works great, saves a lot of time having to disconnect stuff in order to test it. I have a Fluke one also which I picked up later on after I had bought the HF model, and they read the same so the HF meters have come a long way, they're pretty dang accurate when compared to a 200+ Fluke.

We used to disconnect the battery while the engine was running on the older cars to see if the alternator was delivering a charge. Sometimes we started the car with a good battery and then unhooked the battery while the engine was running and swapped in a weak battery. I am afraid to even jump start a modern car.

Need a replacement for my old probe rods - + multimeter. Hope to win a new designed multimeter one from Scotty, so the next time. I dont have to disconnect anythings to measure the amps drop or rises in a modernized car with computerized technologies memories.

I disconnect my battery every time I park my car for a significant amount of time, so typically twice a day. Reason being the battery used to drain by itself, I'm not sure it still does it but as a precautionary measure, I've kept up the habit.

This is great. Could you also use this to see the amps being pulled by the starter to see if poor crank is due to a bad starter struggling and pulling lots of amps, or a bad connection sending below spec amps to the starter?

When you measure the current in the mornings as suggested you need to leave you car unlocked or the hood open overnight. The computer will start up as soon as you unlock your car to get in to release the latch for the hood.

Man all the years I have had a couple of those amp meters in the vehicle for electrical trouble shooting on 1120 volt or higher AC systems and never knew I could do DC current draw with it. Thanks Scotty

Scotty my 2011 Malibu died a couple years ago with 54k miles. Some cheap plastic part in the engine. Those cars are junk. I made a video. A guy from work bought it and put an engine in IT and it died on him
