Hey Scotty, I have a question about my 2000 Corolla LE. My car has 152k miles on it. I never had problems with this car for the past 9 months I've owned it. Drove it to NY a couple months ago from VA. Anyways last week I drove my Corolla to a football game, 2 hours up and 2 hours back. Car drove like a dream like always. until I got home. When I first got home I cut the car off, went inside, then left my house in my Corolla. Right away I noticed the engine was making a small noise kind of like a constant knock. Reminded me of when you start your car in the morning when it's cold. I didn't think much of it. As the next day came it got louder. Then the next morning while driving to work my oil light came on and it was sputtering as if it was out of oil? I made it to work and when I got out of work I put more oil in the car. Dipstick was dry somehow. I put a quart in about two weeks ago. I always make sure to check my oil. Oil light went away but it was still making the noise. After reading the computer it gave me a P1349 code, which is a VVT malfunction code. So after that I decided to get an oil change since dirty oil can be a cause. It was about time I got a change since my oil came out very dirty. After the oil change the car was still making the knocking noise but somewhat quieter. After the oil change I drove to my girlfriends house and right before I entered her neighborhood I was accelerating and then the car hesitated and the noise got very loud. I was thinking the car was going to cut off or something. I made it to her house safely. When I left her house my oil light came on, sputtering, loud knocking, stalling, and then the car cut off (key was still in the ignition, oil light, battery light, check engine light all came on. I got towed back to my house and I thought maybe it was a oil leak. It had to be? Nope, checked my dipstick the next morning and it was plenty. Now when I start the car (I've only started it once since being towed) it shakes very very badly and makes a horrific noise I cut it off after 5-6 seconds. I know it's hard to tell me an answer since it could be so many things. But maybe you've seen this before? Thanks

I owned a Dodge Neon with a sunroof in it from the factory. When it broke, (would not close) the Dodge mechanics kept telling me the manufacture never put sun roofs in their cars. An old crusty mechanic looked at it and said it was a factory sunroof (The production of these ran for less than a year. All the mechanics gathered around as he talked about it. He pulled two clips and it closed manually. So few were made, it was replace with an aftermarket or seal the roof. We just sealed the roof. Never had a problem again.

Scotty, one time we were driving home from Disneyland in So Cal with our 3 year old daughter. We lived up in the high desert. It was late and everyone was sleeping besides me of course. Out of nowhere, POW. I thought someone shot my rear window out Almost had a heart attack. Turns out it was the mylar Mickey Mouse balloon we bought my daughter. Those things just do not not expand like R U B B E R ones. It took me a while to figure out what happened in the dark car. Ha ha ha

hey whoever has the 04 sierra here's your answer. They ALL do this its a common problem. The negative battery terminal is corroded under the rubber. You had an OK connection, until you disturbed it. Just cut the rubber off, clean the corrosion out with baking soda and water, reassemble, and no problems. Like I said, every gmt-800 I own has done this at some point. It's always the negative terminal. Don't know what GM did on the negative side but its a common problem for sure.

You keep saying find a guy like me. here is an idea, start a network of mechanics that you can approve and recommend in the top 25 city's in America. Group together and make it like a co-op. Finding a guy like you is hard. Because a good honest mechanic is hard to find. You could be the CEO of the co-op and really help people without getting monetarily compensated. The return would-be that people are getting honest, sincere, repairs and advice. Just a thought.

If you do some research on the exploding sunroofs, you'll see that a majority of them are the really large sunroofs that are mainly in newer model cars. That is the reason why this has increased in recent years. If you have a small sunroof, like the one in our RAV4, the chances of them failing is far lower. They haven't quite figured out why sunroofs are failing but it must have something to do with them being a really large piece of glass.

Years ago I was called to a car burglary and when I walked up I knew immediately it wasn't a car burglary by way of broken window which was shattered. First, it was the back rear window and secondly all of the shattered glass was on the outside, hardly a piece on the inside. The guy would not accept that his window had shattered on its own because of the heat. I didn't do a report and that really made him mad. Facts, however, are facts.

These explosive sunroof stories seem to center around models that have panoramic sunroofs, which are a complete joke. They rob the vehicle of its structural integrity and the body of the car flexing over dips and undulations in the road is what causes the sunroof to shatter. People: if you want a convertible, just buy one. Stay away from panoramic sunroofs.
