Here\'s How Car Mechanics Scam Customers Michael: Thanks Scotty for letting people know about common rip-offs. Just a week ago, one of my employees went to Firestone for the 10 car check up. She has a 2016 Chevy Trax with about 40K miles on it. They told her that she needed the radiator, transmission and brake flush. Plus spark plugs, cabin filter and air filter. About a 1000 dollars total. Just for the filters to be replaced was 92 dollars. They were using Napa filters that they were up charging 100% over cost. Plus charging her 30 dollars to install the cabin filter. Which is behind the glove box and requires no tools. Takes less time yo change then the air filter. Which there was no extra charge to install the air filter. Total rip-off. I bought both filters for less than 30 dollars and installed them for her. People, listen to Scotty and do a lot of your own vehicle service. They are instructions and videos everywhere that can show you how on just about any vehicle. Plus most just use simple tools that you can buy anywhere. Plus you have the satisfaction of doing the job and can now go buy you a steak dinner.

Scotty, I have a 1995 Lexus LS 400 that I inherited from my Pops. The check engine light is on. The car runs great and then the check engine light starts to blink and it runs rough (missing)Then at a stoplight it idles low. When I bring the idol up to about 750 you can feel the miss Wayback in the background. No I have change the plugs to the original equipment plugs cant remember the name sorry. I went to the dealer and got the exact model that I needed. Anyway can I bring up the idle a little bit I know its fuel injected and its done by the computer but can I bring up the idle a little bit? I am willing to go to somebody that offers free diagnosis via their computer and have them turn off the check engine light but the dealer wants 165 and sodas some local shop and theyll all deduct it from the service and it all translates to 300 for me. I dont wanna spend that much money on the car I love the car it runs great blah blah blah can I turn up the idle a little bit I have been running Lots and lots of fuel injector cleaner and it runs better and then it doesnt then Ill just keep doing that its expensive but it runs better than that doesnt it only put in like 5 gallons with two small bottles of seafoam concentrate. This car has 210, 000 miles on it. Please reply let me know if theres something I can do or etc. etc. because the Lexus all shiny and coming in And they just want to stick their fingers in my pocket

My young and pregnant wife took our 1963 Ford Falcon to Sears for an oil change and new tires (circa 1975. It took them six hours, the girl was unusually patient sitting in the waiting room with two little ones and pregnant too. When I got home from work I checked to make sure everything was done properly. Well, they didn't change the oil, but they still charged us. It was still early afternoon so I had the wife put a stop payment on the check, then we waited. Sears customer service called in a couple of days. I was advised to bring the Falcon in and they would be happy to change the oil and filter. Nope, I said, Send a guy out with a jack, oil and filter. Change the oil in the driveway. My wife will then write you a check. Otherwise you can take us to court. The next day a guy came out and changed the oil and filter. I guess they wanted paid for the tires.

Hendrick Chevy in Durham N. C did this to my car. Then tried to turn around and charge me 1200 to fix it. I filed a complaint with the N. C attorney general office. They say they did not do anything wrong and said told them out of good faith, they would give me half off. I refused to let them work on my car anymore. Car never was the same. It was paid off, so I just used it towards a new Honda CRV. Dont plan on buying another Chevy nor ever going to Hendrick South Point Chevy or recommending them to anyone and advised people going there. A guy was in there yelling at them one day because he had just bought a brand huge Chevy pick-up and the transmission kept acting up and he was tired of bringing it back.

Oil consumption - also depends on where. If it's rings it'll turn the oil dirty fast and regular 3k change is needed. If it's more valve seals or leaks, you can go longer IF the oil is remaining clean. Any breakdown of the oil or contamination will change the color or clarity. It's not just restricted to a particular engine and mileage either, type of use has a very strong affect. I found this particularly varied in 4 cyl trucks, around town and pulling trailers at 3k it was black as the ace of spades. All highway and at 3k the oil wasn't even discolored, I went to 8 - 10k and even then it was barely discolored but changed it anyway.

Upsell = Greed, there is a epidemic in the US it's called GREED and it's catching on fast. Seems like all companies and mechanics, lawyers, doctors, dentists, etc. have some form or level of GREED Also talked to a mechanic a few months back and he told me that he refuses to work on any customers car if they bring their own parts and that he don't need any suggestions or input on what is wrong or how to repair the car, that he was a professional and knows everything about how to diagnose a car or truck. I started to tell him to kiss my a. But did not want make a scene in the parts store.

in college I went a month with out a working starter, just remember to park on hill and pop clutch start the car. eventually once I forgot when I went back home. and I had to go get a starter and fix it. now I had a 2001 maxima with jaco transmission. use to shake at stop lighs/sign. eventually that went away when I discovered that had a bad #4 coil pack. (31 part cost easy fix, after the coil pack and all 6 plugs replaced it seem to go away, maybe just so happened at the same time

1870 for hydrolics and clutch kit (the problem)22 air filter (maintenance)59 cabin filter (maintenance)49 positive battery terminal (maintenance)474 for water pump (starting to leak - will need to replace eventually)My sister sent me this, I say it is an up charge for sure. But how to tell if the clutch is actually needing to be replaced or if the master or slave cylinder needs to be replaced and more fluid added? Car is a 2005 Toyota Corolla with 98, 000 miles on it.

Best thing to do is spend some money on a more than basic scanner - I spent 80 on a bluetooth OBD-II scanner- and scan your car for any codes BEFORE taking it to the dealer or a mechanic. Print out the codes or take screenshots. Make sure to let the dealer or mechanic know beforehand that you scanned the car and notify them of what codes, if any, you found. Also go over Scotty's videos on mechanic scams and check 'em off one by one so you have your bases covered.

Scotty, I own a 2001 xterra which I drove off the lot new. Problem free till now. An illegal smacked into my front bumper and loosened up the wheel well shield. I didn't catch this, it wore away from rubbing the damn tire. I recently drove during a severe rainstorm and afterwards when I tried to start it, nothing from the starter. Everything else is working, just no starter. Any ideas? Wiring? Starter? Computer?
