Avoid This Transmission Like the Plague Daniel: According to GMAuthority, [t]his downgrade applies to 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD models in all trims available with the naturally aspirated 5. 3L V8 L84 gasoline engine with DFM.
I suspect this downgrade from 10-speed to 8-speed automatic transmission has nothing to do with the reliability of the former, as the 8-speed automatic transmission is currently the subject of a class-action lawsuit. This downgrade is more likely related to a supplier issue and/or GM's desire to streamline ordering and production. None of the issues that plague the 8-speed automatic transmission (namely, shuddering) are said to affect the 10-speed automatic transmission.

5: 30 - While it has computers, it's nowhere near as complex as most modern cars, I myself bought a beater 2008 Honda Fit with the Manual, to learn mechanic work on. It's a very basic vehicle, comparable to my old 1995 Honda Civic with the Manual. The Fit's engine is very small (and I was surprised to learn that the Fit's motor (but turbo'd) is also used in the new Base 2020 Honda Accord) and the engine bay is nicely sized, so far it's been easy to get to stuff.
When I was looking for a car to learn mechanic work on, I looked for specifically a 5-speed manual transmission in the following: Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, Scion TC, Scion XA, Scion XB, Pontiac Vibe, Acura Integra, Acura RSX, Honda Civic, Honda Element, Honda CR-V, Honda Fit.
Something with Toyota's 1. 8l motor or Honda's K20, K24 and L15 tied to a Manual Transmission, seem to be the best starter mechanic cars that are modern.

I think Ford's 10-Speed Automatic Transmission will be a winner eventually. Their EcoBoost engines had reliability wrinkles for their first years, but supposedly they've been ironed out. I still won't buy an EcoBoost engine, but only because I love my 5. 0 Liter V8, and don't give a damn about those smaller engines having more power. What I get from my V8 has always been more than enough power for its job. I currently own a 2015 King Ranch with a 5. 0 liter V8 and a six-speed transmission. I'm thinking about getting a new truck, probably a Platinum or another King Ranch, with another V8. What model year did Ford come out with the 10-speed transmission? Was it 2019 or 20? I'm just wondering if I should buy one this year or not. Has the gearbox been appropriately updated? I think I might. Ford has always been good to me regarding recalls and updates.

You all should do your own research. Scotty is making stuff up for clicks. The only GM truck that is going back to the 8 speed is the Chevy 1500 High Country 4wd model with the 5. 3 v8. This is due to a shortage of parts associated with the 10 speed. I found nothing about the 10 speed being dropped because it s junk. Now stories of GM s 8 speed being junk is a whole other story.

There is nothing wrong with the 9 speed GM designed for Ford. Ford has so many different bell housings and GM did not design a case for all of Fords Bell Housings. Instead they wanted Ford to use a adapter plate. Ford didn't like that Idea, so they stayed with their own eight speed. GM knows how to design and built good Transmissions! Ford never has done a good automatic.

There is a lot of good information about cars on Wikipedia, and I use them often to check which used cars would be a good idea to buy. But I wish they would write more about the engines and the transmissions under each generation. And also which problems they had. Sometimes they are good at writing about the engines, but they hardly ever mention the transmissions.

I have a 95 GMC K1500 with regular, plain Jane - high mileage, no mudding truck. The engine is bullet proof- 305. I ve had the standard shift transmission rebuilt about every 60, 000 and then decided to buy a new crate tranny. GM does not know how or just does not want to build a reliable transmission. I now have a Toyota Tundra. Awesome truck.

I had a company suburban. My 2016, transmission let go at 95. 000. Now my company suburban is a 2017 and it has 110. 000 and the transmission is acting up. Any day now. Oh by the way the 16's motor. Lifter issue. Now today the 17's lifter let go. Freaking amazing failed gm products.

Hey scotty I got a 1989 c2500 silverado v8 and I just acquired a 1988 k2500 silverado v8 that the bed and cab is completly rusted out and the frame isn't far away and was curious how easy it is to clean the 4x4 parts of rust and pop them into my c2500

Scotty I know you love your Toyota's but when it comes to fuel economy it sometimes feels like it is not that good. Yes, my wife gets an average of 34 MPG but the tank is so small the RAV4 is actually at the gas station more than my 5. 7 L Challenger.
