I learned how to drive on a 1940s Buick Straight 8 chassis. The body was completely removed. The seat was a iron tractor seat welded to the frame. There was no floor boards of course. And, as you may know Scotty, the brake and clutch pedals were not swing pedals suspended from under the dash, but were designed to go through the floorboards (missing on this car) and all linkage was down on the frame. It had a column shifter. The drive shaft was spinning right next to me. I was a bit intimidated for the first few lessons to say the least at age 13.

When I first started driving standard in the snow, I thought I could put it in a higher gear too to maintain traction. Sure it doesn't put down as much power, but the problem with that is when there is no traction, the tires are going to spin either way. Leaving it in a higher gear leaves the wheels spinning faster, causing more problems.
I find leaving the car in a lower gear, letting it rev higher and modulating the throttle and clutch make managing slippage better and easier. It's a rare, RARE occasion when I launch in second or third.

Former driving instructor here. I would recommend if the revving and clutch worries you. Start by slowly letting clutch out until it bites (that s where it starts to move) without the accelerator and do it a few times until you get used to finding that before adding power. Just allows you to get used to it. Also get some lessons from a decent trainer. Apologies on behalf of all trainers if your former ones sucked

Hey Scotty. Here in South Africa we still have more manual cars than we do automatics, but of course the dual clutch automatics are starting to take over but u can still guarantee majority of South Africans still can drive a manual, specially because even our licensing department still wnt allow testing with an automatic.

Scotty can shift without using the clutch so can I! I have a 99 Ranger all it is basically is matching the RPM s and the transmissions it s called Floating gears. It s the same thing they do in Semi s, but in Semi s they either Double Clutch or Float.

ScottyScottyScotty, I'm 71 and I drive a 78 nova with a mechanical clutch daily, no problem. Would I drive it across country, hmmm, no thanks. But I grew up with the old cars and I love them. My children will probably bury me in it.

Funny this happened to me today. Had to drive about 20 miles then navigate multiple roundabouts with no clutch to get to a workshop my mate works at. Turns out a clip snapped on the bleed release valve assembly. So nothing major.

My wife accelerated hard with our STS on water and the traction control kicked in and a message flashed Poor traction, limiting speed to 120 Mph. She immediately called me to schedule a repair to eliminate the speed limiter!

These modern cars have synchros and the gears aren't straight cut racing gears. Do not upshift without the clutch. it's hard on the transmission. Use the clutch whenever shifting if you want the transmission to last.
