What Cars are Like in Singapore, Proton Wira Glenn lum: I have never posted any comment on youtube before but seeing the comments i thought i would. It is not a very good law in Singapore to be able to own a car for 10 years only. As a Singaporean i agree but as many has said, it is to control the number or car population and emission in Singapore which is very small but we have the option of keeping the car after ten by simply renew the COE for another 10 years and after that another 10 years if 10 chooses. 1 can choose to renew for 5 years too but it is non renewable after that. To reduce the number or old cars on the road which is higher in emission and breakdowns which will cause major jams, there is a yearly 10% road tax increment to prevent people from renewing their cars. Not many knows that the government actually monitors the number or cars that is due or are of certain emission. Example, 2 years ago, commercial vehicles COE dropped alot to encourage owners of anything with below Euro 5 engines to scrape and buy newer lower emission Eurp 5 and 6 vehicles. At the end of 10 years, there is alot a return of 50% of the OMV to the owners which most use as part of the down pay of their new vehicle. I am not a pro governement person but being someone who runs around alot everyday, it is nice to know that i wont be stuck in hours or jam everyday because of car breakdowns on the expressway. I guess its always hard to please everyone

I own a Proton Iswara which an earlier model than Wira. Its been around for 15 yr and accumulated 150k miles so far. IMO this car is even crappier than Wira. But I still keep it for short distance driving and as my project car. The fit & finish is so poor that one can easily run many cables from engine bay to the cabin, without remove any panel. Thus it is easy to do simple DIY such as install DRL, change Bluetooth head unit, replace speakers, install additional fog lights, reverse sensor etc. I even attempted some of the paint job. It is easy to maintain too. Recently the car failed to start, despite able to crank. I googled the symptoms and suspect bad fuel filter and spark plugs. I took about 30min to DIY the fuel filter and spark plugs, and the car back to life But the engine produced some funny noise. It took me few more days to figure out it is bcoz of misfire. Then I checked and found 1 of the plug was not installed properly. The thread of the port has worn out and the plug was misaligned. I tried my best to rectify, it is still not 100% fit, anyway the misfire noise has goneTo be frank this is far from my dream car. At the same time it almost cost nothing to run, except for the fuel, tax and insurance. And I had a lot of FUN from the DIY. Hope our Malaysian govt will never implement policy to scrap old cars like this.

To add on to the video, you cant mod your car, change your headlights, cant have certain off set rims, loud exhaust and swap your car engine. Any of this will result to a hefty fines or get your car impound. For wise, road tax, insurance and COE. The COE cost around SGD30K for 10 years only. Anything more than 10 years youre forced to scrap the car, or you need buy the COE again, which last for another 5 years or 10 years before you cant extend any further and you need to scrap your vehicle. To even drive any car in Singapore is considered a privilege. A Toyota Camry for example in Singapore will cost you around 130, 000 not inclusive of your road tax and insurance.

Among the scandals involving Wira and all Protons was the panel caulking. Its said the Prime Ministers son had the contract to supply caulking. The material was waterbased and as a result, rusted anywhere it met metal. Soon all the cars were rusting straight through the roof, doors, hoods. The company refused to take responsibility and it cost consumers millions to fix their cars. Though the caulking was changed prior to the end of the cars runs around 2007, zillions of rusting Protons still ply the streets, bandaged over with bondo, duct tape, spit, etc.

Superb I love these Mitsubishi based Protons. We got this model in the UK until the mid 2000s I think. They replased it with the Gen-2 hatchback and Persona 4 door saloon. Sadly Proton shot themselves in the foot as the pricing of their cars were matching those of VW and the like. Very sad to learn that this Wira will be scrapped in a few years time. I like the reverse modifications on this one. I wonder if my Nissan Almera N16 will ride better on 15 inch steel wheels instead of its standard 16 inch alloys?

In malaysia, I also see some owner of this car using front eg6 bumper and hood which is shame but creative. The car really looks cute tho. Many of them swap the engine to 4G63T, and many other fast car really mad because of being overtake by these cheap cars. But, who cares? normal people also want to enjoy their hobby. Nothing wrong with cheap car. Proton wira is a great starter car for young boy to be fast.

When Singaporeans live abroad they go crazy and buy a bunch of cars. My cousin married a Brit and settled there. He too went crazy and has 5 cars sitting in front of his house. I on the other hand sold my car 6 years ago after 25 years of driving, and nowabsolutely love taking the excellent public transportation here in Singapore. I wish I made the switch earlier though.
