Automatics only get better gas mileage than a manual, because with an automatic you can 1) run taller gears (due to torque converter, which lowers rpm at cruising speed, 2) modern automatics are built very light sacrificing longevity for short term mpg gains 3) all the good manual transmission engineers are dead or retired 4) They're increasing the number of gears, see number 1? taller gears means crappy performance, unless you stuff more gears in the box, but they're making them light, so it's complex box full of light weight gears meant to die in 150K miles if even that. So much for legendary Toyota 400k cars of yesteryear. To make a 400k mile car, would cost too much, and destroy profits. Never mind that I got 47 mpg on the highway with my old manual Civic dx, 16 years ago. Progress they said

I learned to drive on a stick. Drove it all my life. I believed because of that I was hot st. That's until I drove these modern cars. No wonder F1 is all automatic now. Heck, even the USAF replaced l their planes with modern electronics. No one complains they are not playing fair and shouldn't deserve to win a dogfighting or war. That's just the way it is. Technology advances. Regular carbs got replaced by injectors. And so forth. The same people complaining about modernization and technology are taking elevators, using microwaves, have high definition tvs with remotes and use cellphones. When they are sick, have a heart attack or cancer they want the best and most modern treatment. But God forbid technology bleeds into cars. Give me a break

I admit that the 2020 Hyundai Tucson AWD crossover with the 2. 4 L engine is a lot better than the one with the 2 L engine, only FWD. We are planning to replace our 2007 Toyota Matrix for a brand-new, 2020 Hyundai Tucson within the next couple of months. The 2. 4 L four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and six-speed automatic tranmission with manual-shift mode in the 2020 Hyundai Tucson AWD crossover is a little more heavier and a little more faster than the 2007 Toyota Matrix, which only has the 1. 8 L four-cylinder engine with 126 horsepower and the old school, four-speed automatic transmission. I would like to drive the 2020 Hyundai Tucson AWD crossover with the 2. 4 L engine one of these days.

Why do people keep saying manual transmission is less efficient? Sure there aren't as many gears but you still have better drivetrain efficiency. Also having to shift into every gear makes you drive more conservatively and be less of a stop and go type driver. Also don't automatics weigh at least 100 lbs more? My integra is an automatic and the manual version weighs nearly 100 lbs less. Also, anyone who is concerned about fuel efficiency is not buying a crossover, or an suv, or a pickup truck, so why the hell does that matter to anyone? Most of the reason Automatics are more efficient is only because they have more gears, and taller highway gears.

Scotty, I drive an auto 1990 BMW 535i and i just had the transmission rebuilt in July (2 months ago. Before I got the rebuild it wouldn't even shift into gear, it was toast. Since the rebuild i have noticed that I have a significant lack of power when accelerating from a stop and every single time it shifts between first and second gear there is a loud grinding noise, it has gotten much worse over the last 2 weeks, however it still shifts into gear. What should I do? If I go back to the auto shop that rebuilt it, what should I say?

I understand having an automatic for a daily driver, but a track/weekend car needs to be manual. For the same reason I don't like the idea of an electric motorcycle. In and out of curves, rapid deceleration, anticipation of oncoming obstacles or road directional changes all need a manual input on the transmission for optimal performance. If they put sensors on the vehicle that can see what the driver sees, then and only then will it make sense to me to have an automatic in a performance vehicle or motorcycle.

I owned a 2004 Titan from new for 12 yrs. Put only 72k on it as it was not a daily driver. I did limited towing usually a trailer under 1500 lbs. Blew out a rear end, tailpipe literally rotted off in year 2, E-Brake never worked well as axle seals always leak, front right bearing went at 25k, check engine lights often for o2 issues, and the list goes on. I will never buy another Nissan. Have a 2017 F350 gasser now. so far so good.

Stick shift may be going extinct in the US maybe, but in Europe it will only die when we are forced to go electric. Most drivers make fun of automatic drivers here And if you use an automatic to get your driving licence, you're prohibited from driving a manual one (yes, it is mentioned on your license, so almost everyone gets his/her license in a stick shift car. We sure love our manual gears here. Edit for typo

The thing with transmission is. most people want autos because most of use drive during rush hour and are stuck in heavy or semi-heavy traffic. Manuals in those situations are tiring especially when it's just going on the freeway. Manuals are infinitely more enjoyable than any CVT, DSG, or traditional autos. But unless you're going on a weekend fun drive through hills in a sports car, it's just more practical to have an auto.
