Car Salesman Scams You Need to Know C172Pilotdude: I worked at a honda dealership a few years ago. One scam that they pulled was automatically adding the cost of the extended warranty to the car and many did not notice. For the destination charge, some cars were 850. 00 others were 1000. 00 and if you didn't know that, they were all charged an even 1000. 00. For used cars, I was told it was not worth it to the dealership unless we sold the car for AT LEAST 3000 over what we paid for it. Another time we had a guy who owned 4000 on his car but somehow actually didn't know the amount, the dealership lied to him and told him it was 6500, the guy believed them and they pocketed the extra cash. Plenty of vehicles over time are damaged on the lot and whenever possible, they will repair the car and the customer will NEVER know that it was in an accident. If you want to know how to buy a car, learn how to sell one. Look up Joe Verde.

Bought a 2016 Miata from the Mazda Dealership in Fremont, California and the finance manager tried to change my original contract after I already purchased it. After refusing to resign any contracts unless what the guy was saying was verified by another party (he's already lied to me while buying the car) he used unprofessional tactics and personal attacks to try to force me to come because he thought I was not intelligent because I was by myself when I bought the vehicle with no cosigner, I'm also black. Resign the contract today or we will have to take your car back by force. Returned it with no hesitation because I will never let someone try to use material possessions against me. Also, the fact that I already have a 2000 Miata that runs perfectly, there was no reason to fall for his trick. The finance manager got punished apparently. The funny thing is everyone at that dealership loves me because I was a very easy customer who did not try to negotiate. I had already known exactly what car I wanted and the sales team got a very easy commission that was taken away because of the finance manager. I had the car for a month and got my complete deposit back no issues. Today is my 21st birthday so I wanted to buy that car for myself as a gift, oh well, next time Might go with a Lotus Elise now.

Well JMO, but almost all Vehicles sales are a scam. Auto Makers know people are shallow, and the driving factors when considering a New Vehicle is LOOKS / DESIGN or NAME BRAND. Like if it looks good it got to be a GOOD VEHICLE. If someone would do a honest poll of how people feel about their Vehicle they have Purchase / owned after 2 yrs, 4 yrs, 6 yrs. You'd learn the truth. Reviews written about Vehicles people just purchased or owned for a month or two aren't reliable. Biggest Scam that I can't believe anyone would consider is buying a vehicle online and having it delivered to you. Being so lazy they'd not even go look it over, test drive it, ask questions and get shown the features of a vehicle ( see what works and what doesn't ) they will be paying for many yrs, WOW You deserve to get ripped OFF and you can believe that you will get scammed, ripped off, taken advantage of, sales people will lie to your face, how much more so will it be when they don't have to look you in the eye and do it

When I bought my truck I gave them a number to include all the fees, taxes, and whatever. They didn't budge so I thanked them for their time and I left. The salesman stopped me at the door for a final try. I showed him a post card I had received from them offering me a 500 gas card for buying a car. He went to his boss and I got the deal. When it came to signing the papers, it was for more money. I asked why and I got smoke and mirrors. I left. A few days later I got a call from someone from finance who wanted to know why I didn't buy the truck. I played it cool and said we had a misunderstanding about the deal. I told him the amount I offered to cover everything. He said he would get back to me. They accepted my offer but I had to take delivery the next day. When I got there I told them that I had to go back to my bank to get a certified check. My regular check was good. They even threw in four free oil changes. I got a left over at a good price. I didn't fall in love with it.

Scotty makes all used car dealerships sound awful. There's one near me that litterally sells cars at private party value. Their always packed and their cars move fast. They have their own mechanic shop and even though cars are sold as is. If something goes wrong right they'll fix it free and give you a loaner free. Or if you drive off and realize little things don't work they'll fix them. Super good service they don't play games. I bought a navigator there last year. And a week later the air suspension was sagging. Brought it in they fixed it. Happened again In a few weeks. And asked them to just switch it to coils. Redid my whole suspension for free. And then a few months later someone wrecked into me and I got paid 5k over what I paid for the truck. Can't complain

The dealer I went to for my truck didnt try to sell me a different vehicle and didnt hide prices. Went in, told them the issues with my old truck, what I was interested in and we went from there. Drove onto the lot and first thing I saw was a Colorado, been interested in them for a while so its the first thing I jumped to. Told to ask questions, asked about transfer fees and all that and they told us straight away what they were. Also traded in my old truck and they told me up front they more than likely wouldnt be able to flip it due its problems and cosmetic issues and offered enough to cover title fees and all that. Not all car salesmen are scumbags and not all dealers are trying to scam you. Maybe I just got lucky but they are out there.

I used to be a lawyer and I had a bunch of used car dealers who were clients. They all were buy here/pay here type lots. I learned that they buy the vast majority of their cars at auctions, jacked the price way up, and when they sold it they based the down payment on what they paid for it, so they never lost money if someone disappeared and stopped making payments. Any payments they got were profit. Then, when they found and repossessed a car, they'd charge that same down payment and start the process over again. It was not unheard of to sell the same car five or ten times before someone paid it off and kept it.

Looking for a job after the recession in 2010, I sold cars for 6 months. The most insidious thing I saw was customers agreeing to the price of the car and the payment. What they didnt know was the payment amount was padded by 15-50/month for financing the price you agreed to. So if the Finance guy couldnt sell you anything, theyd say because we value your business and really like you Ill sell you that warranty and the payment stays the same Worked pretty much every time. And if you did agree to buy something, theyd pad the price of the items you bought to match the price. Unbelievable.

There's a car dealership in Dallas called Friendly Chevrolet. They aren't friendly at all I mean I'm sure they were responsible for stealing my dads Texas edition chrome wheels. They were trying to sell him wheel insurance but couldn't so they took them away one night when we were sleeping. I mean he did say buy it before they steal them from you. it took 2 weeks and they were gone. No broken glass or anything so how they get in. The Dallas police is corrupt and didnt help even tho they located the truck 2 streets behind my house. they waited 40 minutes before checking

Hey Scotty, I wasn't a follower yet back when the Runaway Prius thing was going on. What was your take on that? I thought it was bogus and maybe automatic transmission drivers don't know to shift to neutral? I think if I'd been in one of the cars that ran away (I heard the 911 call of the tragic whole family that ran off the freeway) I would have shifted the car into neutral. Wouldn't that have stopped it? Anyway the Tesla thief story reminded me of the runaway Prius thing.
