Bullying someone out of the role of playing a trans character is the very worst thing for the LGBT community. These people trying to shame people as not being real allies, whilst hurting the community themselves, they're so out of touch with reality. To willfully misunderstand what an actor does just so they can be offended. Anyone that got mad at Scarlett is a fake ally. I hope producers wont be too scared to keep trying to make trans characters in films over things like this. I really want to see more representation. Maybe a few more gay men too, they're a bit more rare than gay women in the progressive scene. Unless it's a sitcom. I'm not a fan of sitcoms though. In the more important news, the fact Trump was trying to put the 4 congresswomen down because they were mean about Israel is such a joke when Israel hates women. No-one should support Israel and Trump trying to rope them into being an ally when every president before him kept their distance shows that he'll run shoulders with anyone. Heck he's also friends with Putin and Kim Jong. What's his next move, to tell people these 4 women also made rude comments about those two corrupt leaders? Calling out corrupt leaders is just what they do. I love that they are recieving so much support compared to Trump right now. How many times are we going to have to say Impeach before they listen?

Part of the problem with casting people who have the same background as the character of a movie is that big companies don't want to risk losing money. There's a reason why popular actors are cast in movies - they generate ticket sales. On the business side, it's about money more than it is about racism or gender normativity. But it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle. White cis people get hired more because they're considered less risky, so they have more opportunities to become popular, and then when they become popular it makes them an even safer option to hire. The movie business is slowly trying to break this cycle, but considering the skyrocketted costs of making a hit movie, the companies are also less and less inclined to take risks. America is the center of cinema and white americans are still statistically racist as hell. AND even completely non racist people are more likely to see a movie starring someone they've seen before, and whether they are aware of it or not, that's more often a white cis person.

I don't see how this is 100% her fault because people are hiring her to play these roles they're seeking her out they're contacting her to come and play these roles and isn't it more important that movies and stories like this come out then who played them because it brings more attention to the gay and transgender community then whether or not Scarlett Johansson is an actual transgender actor? Because now sadly this movie may never be made which may be a step back in finding better acceptance for the gay and transgender community. So I think in the long run it's a bigger loss then it is a gain for the community. Also if the movie turned out to be well accepted and well-received it could have led to Future roles that would have been played by transgender actors as a result of Scarlett Johansson as the part of this transgender female in this movie. Me personally I would rather see movies like this be made to help better bring a light and acceptance to the gay community game who plays the role.

I firmly believe that logical debate - devoid of emotional tactics - should be taught in every school, in every country. Teach people how to recognize the difference between facts and emotional appeals. When people can tell the difference, they can reason better and be more rational. If this was taught, the whole 'go back where you came from' idiocy wouldn't be valid in our country. If you are capable of thinking logically, you can recognize that A: if a person was raised in America, they are American, and B: Acknowledging the imperfections of America and wanting to improve your own country is commendable. How is disagreeing with various government policies and practices unamerican? The right to disagree and the right to enact change is how our country was founded. Free thought and free speech is essential. You don't have to agree, but attempts to silence opinions by calling them foreign or unamerican is blatant racist manipulation.

I think when it comes to actors/actresses wanting to play parts and roles where they embody an identity that the actors themselves don't have then they should take a step back. While I understand that the point of acting is to take on a role that isn't you at the end of the day it becomes a matter of representation. Like Scarlet Johansson said, the industry tends to typically only cast CIS White actors and that's just plain unfair. When it comes to stuff like this I also think of Jorden Peel's decision to cast actors of color, which is something he did because he, like Johansson, knows that the industry discriminates and he's trying to cut down on that. That's why I personally don't think it's right for Johansson or other actors or actresses to audition for roles that are intended for other minorities and under represented groups

In any other situation, she would not be vying to play a man. That is what she was trying to do. Play a man. Just bc he was a trans man, people think that that somehow makes it ok, as if his transness invalidates his manhood. She doesn't want to play other men, she wanted to play a character that cis women shouldn't play, a trans man, bc this then furthers the falsehood that trans men are still women. There would be significantly less push back if the role was planned to be played by a cis man, as the part is a Male character. Trans men are consistently misgendered and misrepresented as women in media and life, we don't need a FAMOUSLY female celebrity to portray us and, in so doing, push the false and harmful narrative that we are women playing dress up. Sorry, DeFranco, swing and a miss for the whole crux of the controversy.

Casting directors should pick the person they feel best embodies the character in question. In an ideal world transgender actors wouldn't actually be at a disadvantage, but the next best thing imho (which is still a long way off) they would first look toward actual transgender actors for a transgender role, but if they can't find the right one, why not go for an otherwise really well fitting actor who is just CIS? Transparency is the problem here though, because we have no idea what goes on in those offices, how many trangender actors applied for a role vs cis actors. Same goes for a role written as Asian. Related to that, there is no reason NOT to cast an asian or african american actor if a character isn't specifically written as being white.

Trump is right, the Congresswomen hate America, they called it racist and evil on many occasions, and going back to fix your own country isn't racist. Before the Mexican elections the president had an approval rating of 12, and that's due to the corruption in the Mexican government. A government that would not be in power of those most oppressed and hurt by it, if they wouldn't leave. You're going to continue to have an endless stream of migration if you don't fix the problem that's causing all that migration. And it's funny how the double standard is so blatant with Trump saying something bad about some people of color, but Nancy pelosi can say that America being white is a bad thing and immigration is good because it displaces white people.

Having an actor play a character that is not traditionally that race/gender is fine, IF and only if the character's story is not dependent on their race/gender. ScarJo playing a robot in Japan? That's fine. It's not like robots have a race. ScarJo playing a transman in a movie that's specifically about the experience of a transman? 1) It would make sense for the transman to be played by an actual MAN, whether he be trans or cis. Having your male character be played by a woman shows that you don't agree that transmen aren't women. 2) Again, it's a story specifically about a transman. It's not a role that can be flexibly changed. Ariel's story isn't about her experience of being white, it's her experience of being a fictional fish.
