Did people forget to take into consideration that the scene in 13 reasons why is SUPPOSED TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE? If the show was all good feelings then people would definitely want to commit suicide instead of reaching out. This makes it look scary which imo is A GOOD THING. For example, when I was 14 my dad let me watch this scary movie from the 90s about a guy that targets teenage girls in a chat room and kidnaps them. The whole movie centres around her being taken and the parents interact with her captor over the online chat room to try and figure out where she is. I dont remember what its called, I just remember the lead singer of Twisted Sister played the antagonist. The movie was graphic (more then most people would be comfortable letting a 14 year old watch) but it taught me something very important. How you have to be super careful online because one day you might draw the short straw and run into someone evil and they will hurt you. Sure, a simple talk with my parents may have been better in most peoples eyes, but it wouldnt have driven the message into my brain like this movie did. People are so dead against any feeling of discomfort in media these days but it can be used effectively as a learning tool for young people imo

Thank you so much I'm so happy to see this opinion being voicemail I was afraid to say otherwise online, but I thought 13 Reasons Why was he absolutely amazing show and allowed me to express the type of trauma and fix extreme emotion you feel when dealing with some real thoughts of suicide and depression not just the kind of surface-level depression most teens seem to go through no offense. I know a lot of people craps on the show but never before the show had I been able to relate with the character so well. The fact that you would take such a impactful and meaningful seeing is abhorring to me it makes me sad to be honest I can absolutely understand that it's triggering to some viewers and I would never want to do that to someone. But I wish that maybe there was a way to have alternate versions of the show? Like a tractors cut and a regular cut. Because I really do think that's something that's not worth getting rid of four people that wants to experience something like that. I'm a very drastic an emotional person so for me that wasn't scary that was like experiencing a high or something.

yo honestly that 13rw scene was SO hard to watch i don't even think i watched the whole thing lmao i'm pretty sure i closed i eyes idk, i'm just not into gory stuff. i think it's dumb they took it down but like also i love how they did it 3 seasons later bc everyone has already seen it so it doesn't really matter haha so props to them for that i know they did that on purpose haha tbh people are just too sensitive nowadays and also hypocrites like the same people saying suicide is glamorized are the same ones saying that scene was too graphics but also we as a society need to start a conversation lol so like okay. what do u want? if someone wants to kill themselves they're going to do it no matter what. no one who isn't suicidal is going to watch that and be like hannah baker slit her wrists and died so I slit my wrist and died haha so quirky. people are so dumb this is the equivalent to people saying putting gay characters in kids shows/movies will turn their kids gay. now that i think bout it, they're probably the same ones saying 13rw make ppl kill themselves lol stfu

Its strange to me that the book had been around for years and no one complained about it until it was turned into a Netflix series. I remember when it was in talks of being a movie first. So if you had a problem with it glorifying suicide then you should have said something about the BOOK before the tv show. They also changed the death from taking pills to wrist cutting for the fact that taking pills is always romanticized when it comes to suicide where wrist cutting is not. I think it needed to stay because it makes you uncomfortable, it makes you see that its not a simple cut and you fade away and all the pain is gone. It hurts, you are suffering, and its not instant. Then you see the suffering of the family finding her. If someone wants to kill themselves a tv show wont make them if they already had their mind made up about it. Helping, listening, and looking for signs are the only way to truly help someone, not editing a show.

Personally, I never got the impression that the graphic depiction of suicide was glorifying, rather disturbing and hard to watch as it would be in real life. However, there is the drawback to showing every detail in how it is done, hence the unfortunate copy-cat victims. There are so many already vulnerable teens out there that don't understand how to properly, or are unable to, seek professional help. There could have been a number of impressionable teens that were exposed to this nearly step-by-step guide for the first time, and wanted to leave this ever-lasting impact like the fictional character in the show. I know first-hand what it's like to go through an inner turmoil and relating to a fictional character so much as an impressionable teen that I thought acting like them would be a good idea. I doubt blame these shows for my actions, but I probably wouldn't have gotten the ideas if it weren't for them.

Something people arent talking about is how Bianca made a name for herself online by using her body to gather a following of said orbiters and knowingly and willingly took advantage of them. She also sent illegal pictures of herself (she was 17) to men knowing it was against the law. Im not saying she deserved to die or anything but the story was covered wrong. She was mentally ill and was publicly glorified for it. She was never once called out for her actions and it lead to this result. The man that murdered her was an orbiter who took her to a concert where she made out with another man in front of her and used him. That guy was also mentally ill too but social media and the toxic egirl and eboy culture lead to this girls death. We need to discourage this kind of behavior of young impressionable girls taking advantage of men and men cheering it on.

I don't think they should have removed the suicide scene. It didn't glorify suicide at all. It showed how real it was and how serious suicide and the events leading up to that moment are to thousands of struggling teens around the world. You can't have those events play out leading up to the scene and then cut away to the reaction from her parents. If anything this takes the gut wrenching sad reality away from the scene and will trigger more people who otherwise would have reconsidered their own suicidal feeling after seeing these terrible events in their entirety. I think we shouldn't shy away from these issues and art and film have always reflected what is happening in our everyday lives. I applauded 13 reasons why for not cutting away and not sugarcoating this very REAL, very SERIOUS problem. Keep it in, it will help more people than it offends.

13 rw actually triggered me tbh, i know i shouldnt have watched it but everyone told me to so i did for a bit, it triggered every bad thought i used to have and was like a trigger for me to attempt suicide again, it really does romanticise suicide and i hate it, after this my cousin committed suicide and i had to go through that whole deal while 13 rw was coming out with a new series, It just completely shapes suicide wrong, people are sad for a while then they move on but the people closest to the person who died never forget and are changed forever, you dont become a national hero for committing suicide, youre literally just gone and have left the people who love you broken forever. The show puts a narrative in depressed peoples minds that if they die theyll become famous or everyone will honour them, it is far from the truth.

As a suicide survivor who watched the show I think the depiction was accurate, which is important to me. But the most moving part was her parenting coming in. The part with her parents entering was also edited which I think was a mistake. It wasnt too graphic and it should have remained unchanged even if the actual suicide was cut. I have respect for health care professionals as well as other survivors and people currently suffering. But the scene with her parents was so moving. And editing it takes away from the point of the scene. As other people have said. The glorification of suicide in 13 reasons why was not from that scene. But the over all idea of the show. That you could somehow have a large impact after your dead and not have to live with the consequences. Which in most cases is not true.
