I work at the YMCA for their club kid program, I live outside new york city and because of the outbreak there they were scared my county would get it so as a precaution they shut down the schools. I don't work for the school directly, I work for the YMCA. So the schools on Friday and on Monday they emailed everyone at my work and said they were letting everyone that worked there go until schools opened. They said once schools reopen everyone was free to reapply for their jobs. So I had to apply for unemployment. What is the most frustrating thing about the whole situation is if you go on the company's social media they ask members to keep paying for all services until they reopen. So my company is still getting paid while they don't have to worry about their workers. My sister works for the YMCA as well, as a gym trainer, she got laid off as well. But I believe her situation is worse. She doesn't work for the company anymore until the gym reopens, but the YMCA is asking her to do her classes for their social media so that their members get content. To me that's just utterly disgusting, she working for them without pay. My sister and I are recent college graduates and we live at home so we don't have to worry about rent and other taxes and fees, but we work with people that do. I feel bad for people that aren't able to afford to live because our jobs just laid us off so they don't have to worry about paying us. I'm not sure if anyone is going to take the time to read this, but I wanted to share our story. It's not a tragic story but it's just really upsetting to find out your job does not give a shit about you or any of their employees. Especially a non-profit that says it works to better the community. I just needed to say this and get it off my chest.

I feel for everyone on unemployment, and not to downplay the situation for those who are affected by business closures during this mess, but there are also those of us who were affected before this started. I was laid off from my job back at the beginning of February, but until yesterday I was still having to do the regular work searches in order to get my benefits. That is really hard to do when no one is hiring because they are shut down. People can't apply for jobs that do not exist. I hope all other states take this into consideration. I am glad that the government wants to give people money to help, but what will this accomplish? It won't actually stimulate the economy, since the money will likely be required to go to rent/mortgage and other necessary bills, and even if it doesn't, there is nothing to spend it on since shops are closed. I hope if people use online ordering, they don't just use Amazon. The loans Phil mentioned yesterday are great in theory, but it is still a loan. Based on the numbers, businesses with less than 500 employees could potentially get a maximum of 4. 6 million in loans to cover payroll. Even at 1% interest, depending on how it gets compounded, that's 46k that the company loses, which could mean at least one job permanently lost. I know this is exaggerated, since most small companies are not paying the approximately 1500 a week mentioned, but still, its possible that companies will either choose not to take these loans, or to permanently terminate an employee to cover the interest.

hate to be the guy to say i told you so but. i told everyone that despite andrew yang being the new guy, his idea of the freedom dividend would erase about 80% of the panic and stress in peoples live currently because it is usually due to relying on your paycheck and being screwed when it goes away due to automation. well, that automation wave is still coming and many of your jobs will still be going away, but now we all get a bit of a preview on exactly what it looks like when shit hits the fan. trump wants to give everyone 1000, andrew yang worked out and a full plan that would work that would give everyone 1000 each month and work as a safety net in situations like this or when(not if, when) automation removes 40+% of the current jobs. it's time to wake up, i don't care if it's andrew yang or donald trump, we need to be voting towards securing our future against the worst case scenario. we've failed at that, and many people are getting a taste of what desperation feels like for the first time. a lot of people thought oh that's other people who will lose their jobs. nope, it's people like you and your loved ones who will all lose jobs. time to wake up.

So Im from Hawaii. The culture in Hawaii is very close, so lots of hugs, honi, and other physical touch. We have somewhere around 10 cases between all 8 islands and we just had our first community spread the other day. Isolation, er, social distancing is hard for family here, but with a huge elderly population, we have to. A secondary thing, we have a problem if shipping companys like Young Brothers shut down. There is not a stable food supply for the population here, so if ships close, were hosed. Lastly, tourism is being hit. For most locals (including myself, its kinda nice because inconsiderate people dont line the beaches and streets, however it is our biggest source of income as a state. Basically: our economy will suffer more than it already is, just look up the RAIL project heh heh. I am keeping myself safe, washing hands and only going out on limited special occasions, but it is hard not being able to hug family and friends.

Here in Barbados, we went from 2 confirmed cases to 6 and now it seems we may be at 11: all in the sapce of a week and a half. The first 2 confirmed cases were people who traveled to the U. S and can back showing symptoms of the virus. Schools have been closed a week early and panic buying has raised its ugly head here as well. We are all about tourism here and so far many hotels, b&bs, bars and restaurants have had heavy financial losses due to cancellations and closures. We had a year long plan of outdoor activities known as We Gatherin' 2020 which has been postponed for the foreseeable future and for many small businesses and individual entrepreneurs, they don't know where they will get their next dollar. The virus has affected many in many ways. Thank you for reporting on those who have recovered. The media is only reporting on those affected and casualties of the virus. Stay safe everyone.

I totally get some of these kids/young adults/twenty somethins wanting to go out and have fun while they can. Too many of my friends are going to miss their graduation or not be able to graduate at all because the things needed for them to graduate have been taken away from them because of this virus. I may not condone it to go out and party but in the past few weeks there hasn't been much to be excited for with the virus going around and if these people want to go out, have fun, and not let the media, the virus, and everyone telling them no to get them down then we as the people shouldn't be shaming them or bringing them down for their decisions. Just like the government can't forcibly keep people in their homes we shouldn't be able to tell everyone else what to do

I really think that people trashing Gal Gadot and the other celebs on that video are just lashing out in these extremely uncertain and frightening times. Fck the celebs/rich people who are getting tested without symptoms and getting really quick turnarounds. But when you have people just trying to spread a little joy, be they rich or not, we should appreciate it. Yes celebs are not facing the same struggles that people in the middle and lower classes are but it doesn't mean they are necessarily out of touch and can't show empathy towards other people. I really want to believe in their good intentions and, with so much other shit in the world right now, good intentions should count for something.

now here is my question are those people actually losing their jobs or are they just filing for temporary unemployment while their place of work shut down because an employee tested positive meaning they still have their jobs but just cant work. additionally on that note of not being able to work how many people who have gotten sick or are quarantined chose to file for temporary unemployment because most businesses here in the states only give employees a total of 10 paid days off for the entire year be it called sick time or vacation time or paid time off. i know if i get sick or my work shuts down temporarily im sure as hell not burning all 10 days of my sick time this early in the year

As to the people not taking Covid19 seriously. Stop trying to appeal to their humanity by telling them of the risk they pose to others. Stop trying to appeal to their self-preservation by telling them it can be bad for them. All that's left is asking them what about the world today is annoying to them. Miss watching sports? Social distance do it can come back. Miss going to the bar with friends? Social distance so the bars can reopen. Having to work from home bumming you out? Social distance so your job can have you back. School closures got you down? Social distance so they can reopen.
