It's true that the tech industry did have a hand in the craziness of the rents and it's awesome that they are trying to bring some balance back. I applaud that. The rent caps, I also applaud, but the seedier story is one you should look into. As soon as the caps were announced that they'd start at the first of the year, landlords starting evicting tenants or raising rents 800 or other exorbitant amounts knowing the tenant couldn't pay and would have to leave. Why? Because they know they won't get the substantial increases they are used to so they are hiking rents to 5 years down the line prices so that when the year begins, their new tenants will already be at the level they would have raised to over the next few years and on top they will get an add'l 5% plus inflation each year. This is causing the immediate increase in homelessness while landlords are actually making MORE money out of the deal than they would have without the rent cap. 1, 200 becomes 2200 which they'll get every month now rather than the 100 increase they'd have gotten yearly which would have hit 1, 700 in 5 years. It's not ok. They evict current tenants (who they know can't pay the higher price, do a cheap facelift to the place, and voila, now gets much increased rent. It's disgusting. I got priced out in 2017. There's a point where a place is not worth the rent no matter how much money you earn and people salaries certainly weren't increasing by 300 a month every year. This is a problem you should do a whole show on. It needs to be highlighted so it can be stopped.

I'm a student at San Jose State University (San Jose, CA) and I can attest that the housing crisis is just so bad here. I'm paying around 1900 a month for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1 living room and kitchen apartment for 2 people, which I guess is expected, but this is in a building meant for students so one would expect it to be cheaper. SJSU has the highest amount of homeless students in the CSU system, with about 13% of our students not having stable housing. Many students sleep in the school library (open 24/7 every day except Sundays for students) or in their cars which isn't safe because SJSU is in downtown. There's really no parking nearby either and SJSU does very little to accommodate homeless students. Many of the neighborhoods have a lot of issues with homeless camps, a few issues I've seen or heard of are homeless camps blocking sidewalks on busy streets (such as near schools, blocking hiking trails in parks, some people harass or attack passerbys, drug use, etc. Many of these people are just normal people who can't afford a place to live, prices are insane.

I live in the Seattle area I am a CNA (nursing assistant. I use to work in Seattle proper but my super commute 90minutes each way so I now live and work in Tacoma. Rent is still high and I still can't afford to save and properly put away for anything that could happen. I live paycheck to paycheck. I just renewed my lease and that's an extra 100 a month so like 9% increase. I love what I do I love being a CNA and I feel really annoyed and hurt that I have a job that i have to yearly pay the government to renew my license for and yet I can't make a wage that allows me to live alone without paying 45% of my income to rent I work in an intensive care unit at a hospital so it's okay money. I could go to school to get a better job but then I'd be in debt and still needing to work 40 hours a week. I support myself and don't have a family home to move back into, and I'm 32 I want to live on my own. I'd welcome a rent cap with open arms

The housing issue is why I believe in rent control. Where I live, it is a kinda small town, with a small college. The college has been around for a long time, but the rent here is crazy. Your talking about 800 a month for a 2 bed one bath house/apartment. No animals allowed. The reason behind this is because the local tribe offers housing assistance just as the state does. So the price of rent has doubled and animals are no longer welcomed. As a single mother of two who does not qualify for any assistance, because my position pays 87 too much, I am either forced to live with someone to keep my kids in a decent house (decent is a stretch for the house) or live in a house that has major issues (floors with cracks, bathroom silicone sealing window cracks, doors that have gaps in the to or bottom. All in shady neighborhoods. I currently pay 700 and my roommate payed300. That is 900 a month for a 3 bedroom house with one bath.

I have a friend that lives her in Arizona and worked in a satellite office supporting a tech company in Mountain View. She was making real good money here. She lived very nice exclusive high end area in Scottsdale, Had vary nice car etc. etc. The company promoted her, increased her pay by 2/3 and she had to work out of mountain view, ca. About 3 months later she was back in Arizona took a 2/3rd pay cut and declined the position moving back into her old roll at the company. She said she could not afford to live or find a decent place that would compared to her living standards in Arizona making 1/3 the pay she would of made in California. She goes all the extra money looked real nice but shou could not afford to live ca in what she called poor people conditions.

Its pathetic that people still think a 'free market' can exist. In a capitalist economy, the vast majority of people _have no choice_ to not play the game. If you do not work, you will starve to death in the streets. Without a minimum wage, companies can and WOULD (because they HAVE in the past) pay you in coupons to their own store, but because your choice is that or _die, _ there is no choice. Companies have all the power, consumers have none. A water company can charge whatever they want, because they have the power, and a functional monopoly. Same with electric, internet, garbage services. The market MUST be regulated, to hell with poor-little-rich-man's profits. And that's only exponentially more true for housing. You can't NOT have a place to live.

_I know how to fix California: _Step 1: Figure out which politicians have their campaigns most funded by the big tech oligarchy that is hollowing out the middle class thereStep 2: Make sure these are the same politicians who want to open your borders to massively inflate your population, the middle-to-low income labor market, and home seekersStep 3: Keep voting these types of politicians in over and over again, you idiots. That should fix it, right? Whatever happens, Californians, just stop moving to Idaho. We're sick of you, and the poisonous politics you bring with you. I'd volunteer to campaign for any president who said they were going to spend the funds for the Mexican border wall on walling off California instead.

Crop burning in developing countries serves a fairly relevant purpose in preventing disease and pest transmission between seasons. Developed countries have addressed this with mechanization and vehicular means, which is costly and most relevant in larger-scale systems. small farmers can't afford to follow the same practices, which leads to cheaper, more impactful solutions in terms of air, soil and water pollution. It is dangerous because of the combination of the two polluters, but urban management should be addressed first. The US penalizes rural offenders first (re Waters of the US) and then often ignores urban pollution due to the lack of point source polluters. It will likely happen in India as well.
