Greetings! I'm the producer of this episode of Deep Look. I wish we could have brought it to you in smell-o-vision. The stink of the infested tree filled a whole city block, and got all over my shirt. Leave us your questions and comments! And visit Anna at Gross Science, too. Elliott

Or they could just import the predators of the beetles (over 50) are known to feed on the beetle and the larvae. Just have to find the ones that dont cause an even bigger issue than the beetles. Far better than poison that the insects will gradually over time become resistant to.

Sad to see those majestic palm trees getting destroyed by these bugs. I have two similar palm trees here in France, around 5 or 6 years of age (therefore not as big/tall, but fortunately we don't have those insects in the north west of France. So far so good.

Humans created this disbalance in nature, it's no solution to the problem to kill even more species. Be happy there are still insects left.
And one more thing - you are gross in the way you talk about our environment. Beetles are'nt.

eat it, Eat It, EAT. Oh WAIT, Eweeeeeuuuuuuu!
Didn't think that would happen, but humans.
I know of these bettles around my neighborhood and Everytime I see them, they get smeared under my shoes. Now, I find few of them.

That's what happens when you import non-indigenous plant life to as new part of the world. That's how half the insect and weeds we have in the US got here and are choking out other ecosystems and insect life

I didn't know palm trees were a type of grass. I thought they were real trees.
But why did you do cartoon versions when demonstrating the beetles life cycle? I mean it looks like that Nickelodeon show it's pony.

This is unfortunately one of the invasive species that we can't deal with by simply eating them to extinction in the invaded habitat, since they got here themselves. You win some, you lose some.

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and we've got tons of native palms here. They grow like weeds, frankly. I don't see any dead ones. So I wonder if the native trees are more resistant to these beetles?

In Southeast Asian countries, we eat these MFs since they are pests who destroy our precious palm trees. They are quite delicious, whether eaten raw or stir-fried.

here in Las Vegas we have Palm Trees absolutely everywhere.
Never even heard of these things, maybe they don't survive well herein the extreme dry heat lol

Fact is, urban areas are basically ignoring this issue and will scramble to put out the fire once it's too late to stop.
