You guys talk like you're trying to teach something huh. That's not the right way nothing's learned DO Something. Any ApprenticeD will tell you you only learn by doing / what you're saying does not sink in until you do it so do it do it do something anything a guy can get his hands on. 63 years old Tradesmen/ on a job site once the scariest thing I ever saw was a young man walked past me obviously scared speaking in a high voice to no one in particular. What do I do where do I go how do I know what to do as a Tradesman I told him get into Electronics. Doesn't matter what if it's got a current do it with this knowledge now go and teach professionals do // amateurs teach! Keep up the good 'work, ' I use that word lightly

My dad should watch this video and maybe he'll listen and stop switching things around without a clue until he blows the fuse after switching to the wrong setting while using the fused line. Hes one of those can fix anything types unless it involves electricity, then he gives up which is why i have taken it up as I was the same way after learning from him.
Just knowing how to actually use a multimeter correctly gives you so much more confidence.

Seeing the fact that Australian power outlets have no safety screen kinda tells you a little about our country. We have a saying here. She'll be right. and the fact we have no safety screens on our outlets sums this saying up perfectly. For everyone outside Australia She'll be right. roughly translates to. It's not safe at all but I am slightly confident it will work anyway so don't worry about it too much.

I am new to this field and am very excited to learn new things.
I am using the fluke 101 right now
But i wanted to try an analog multimeter and i was wondering which one should I use, and to my surprise the one you showed in your video at the begining caught up my eye. I was hoping that if you will provide me that little beauty.
I will be thankful to you.
Your fan.

Wonderful well animated video (as always)
Safety: Testing mains voltage, and to a lesser extent any supply, it is worth a clear mention in the 'safety precautions' bit to be absolutely sure the the meter is NOT in a current measuring mode esp with older meters, as this could be very dangerous and trip circuits.
Many thanks.

Apologies in advance for being confused easily, so Im still trying to grasp to be careful to put the meter in parallel of a circuit which could destroy it, but wasnt there a couple of examples like if youre on the either side of a component to get the difference in voltage, isnt that putting the meter in parallel?

I use a multimeter to check plugs individual circuits to make sure theyre off before working, use them in cable tv to log all relevant powering information, amp draw voltage output for back up power supplies and used on powered thru catv lines before we began to splice it, coring hot coaxial cable ruins all the tools

It's interesting you suggest neutral first, in automotive you always use hot first as ECUs are extremely delicate and using neutral first causes arcing. In all honesty though as long as you're not welding your wrench to the frame it doesn't really matter much as long as you can do it without sparks

Select voltage before connecting it to electricity. You wouldn't want to cycle through the amps or temperature measurement. I don't think 2m is the highest setting, it is 2 millis.
I'd be more worried about the health of the Fluke meter than myself because it has a price of gold.

connecting in series instead of parallel, that explains why i've burned out a couple multimeters in the army, they just told me to put this probe here and this probe here with no explenation. i wonder how much money we've wasted on burnt fuses and meters

Hi, just bought the book, but I was hoping to find some more information on using a multi meter on a 3 phase distribution box commonly found on vessels. E. g checking voltages across breakers, contractors etc. any ship specialises videos would be great

Not that anyone needs to constantly add an asterisks on the screen every time they say that electrons 'flow' through circuits, since charge is conducted along the electromagnetic field. But I do giggle to myself and wondered if you do as well. :D

At 69 years of age and a beginner in electronics ( my way to avoid boredom) I find this tutorial simple, and easy to understand not to mention its emphasis on safety. Thanks engineering mindset.

Why is it ok to place the meter leads on the ends of the battery but must not connect them in parallel? Whats the physics with whats happening? Or is this is just a no no in Amps mode.

If it reads the difference between two points, then why do measuring two 120v legs show 240v? If they have the same volts and it reads the difference, shouldn't it read 0 volts?

Excellent intro/tutorial for the DMM. I grew up with the analog version which I still use occasionally, but definitively the digital is better. Thanks for sharing! 73, Joe K4JGA

I have a job interview comming up that requires me to use a multimeter, and I havent used one on a job in 8 years so I needed a review. Good video. Keep up the good work.

I like using a multimeter to find continuity from one end to another end if a wire. And most multimeters will beep or make sound when it picks up the other end of the wire.

just small addition: brand new AA come 1. 64V without a load (those 1. 5x have some shelf file behind them. Also some MM have batt testing functions for 1. 5/3/9V

After watching this, I confidently used my old digital multimeter on our outlet. Disappointing to say, I've blew it.
Should've listened more carefully

In Australia its illegal to check or do any work on AC 240V electrics, we must be certified and licensed electricians to check or work on any AC 240V

Thank you very much for this video. Brilliantly explained. I am confident enough now to buy a multimeter for working on my small electronic projects.

Is that Fluke 115 Multimeter any good?
I've just bought one, but don't know me head from me ass with these things hence why I'm here!

Referring to testing current and making sure the multimeter is not connected in Parallel- How would you know this on a car or motorcycle?

Why does direct connection show dashed lines and AC show a continuous one? Youd think it would be the other way around
