Make your own Ambient Lighting with the Raspberry Pi Zero MirthCastle: ATTENTION: There is an issue I discovered where the HDMI2RCA converter was dumping power back into the system via the HDMI cables (HDMI is 5V too) and was lighting the LEDs even with the whole thing unplugged, so I added a 1N5399 Diode from the Wago terminal to the converter positive to prevent any backflow from it.
I also connected the HDMI splitter directly to the wall instead of the circuit so I could watch/play without the Ambilight (why would I) turned on all the time. The splitter requires power to operate, and the circuit he designed in the Zero version requires everything to be on in order for it to work.
I have since integrated the whole thing with Google Home and a smart switch So now all I have to do is say Hey Google, turn on Ambilight.

So I needed to use an Arduino (ESP8266 in my case) as a bridge between the Pi and my WS2812B, as I couldn't get them to work with the Pi itself. I use a sketch specifically made for hyperion. I've tried setting the baudrate as high as possible but it always starts to flicker when I start an animation. Rainbow Swirl for example. After 5Mins, everything just flickers and I need to restart the ESP to fix it for the next minutes. Any ideas? Have to test it with the grabber, but if it flickers with animations, it probably does with the grabber too

Nice to see someone using the superior APA102 model LEDs in the wild, instead of the cheaper, more common WS2812 that everyone seems to use.
Here's a secret for you: While authentic APA102 LEDs were probably still in production when this video was made, they no longer are, and if the listing says APA102, you're actually getting SK9822. But that's OK, because the protocol for SK9822 are slightly easier to use.

I had to buy a different splitter, because my TV couldn't handle the HDCP (because the splitter was 4k comp) together with my Yamaha Amp. It said my TV can't handle the HDCP, which why ever got activated only when both Yamaha and the splitter were connected. Now I bought the same as you have I think, I'll have to check if this one works. That took me a long time to figure out: D

Your hand-drawn diagram appears to be missing the wiring coming from the power source itself, or am I just missing something? I am trying to eliminate the need for a Node Module if I can help it, as that just seems to add unneeded complexity.

Hi GreatScott! is it possible to make ambiant light just on ruspberry pi 2, 3, 4? I planning to make tvbox from ruspberry pi. So will be great to make ambiant on ruspberry to have less wires on the back of tv. Thank you.

Hi Scott! If I'm using an Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, is it the same pin connection for the Data and Clock? Am I still using pin 19 and 23, or there are different?

Way to much work for lights. I stick with my monster led lights from Walmart. Stick it, plug it up, and its on. Not to mention it comes with a remote.
