Ten Minute History - The Austro-Hungarian Empire Short Documentary angel: For more information about the start of World War I look up the extra history series called the Seminal Catastrophe.
The king of the austro-hungarian Empire actually didn't like his nephew very much and wasn't all that upset about his death. The problem with the blank check that Germany wrote austro-hungarian was that they were supposed to step on it and get it over with quickly as a punitive action and not take any territory and be done with it. Since the austrians didn't move fast enough and they very nearly came to a compromise instead it dragged everybody into a war that didn't need to f happen at all because nobody really like the kid except the actual Bosnian Elites who had invited him there because he was the voice of reason and trying to fight for their rights at the Capitol. The Assassin Gavrilo Princip actually killed his own greatest Ally in the Imperial Court and messed up the entire continent in the process.
This whole succession nonsense really could have been solved by a simple Hapsburg family hunting trip over the weekend to pick a new heir and be done with it.

The Romanians had their own separate Revolution in 1848, the interests of Romanians were not the same as the interests of Hungarians, despite what your animation might suggest.
During World War One, part of the problem for Austria-Hungary was that some of their soldiers deserted rather than fight against their own flesh and blood.
Hungary did not accept Trianon, it invaded Romania and got its ass kicked.
Romanians were the majority in Transylvania despite centuries of brutal discrimination, so boo-hoo for the Hungarian minority.

Serbia, who's responsibility is debated.
As I understand it, whatever debate exists revolves around just how far up Serbian responsibility goes. The Black Hand in Serbia certainly provided a lot of support (money, weapons, training) to the movement Princep was involved with, and the leadership of the Black Hand included prominent Serbian army officers. So it's a question as to whether these officers betrayed their country by going rogue or had the tacit assent of their government.

07: 59 our soldiers are fleeing it's not like that at that moment, austro-hungaryan empire sent Serbs left from river Drina (Bosnia and Hercegovina) to fight Serbs right of river Drina (Central and North Serbia). I mean what do u expect, when very good part of their army was Serb + empire sented people to fight and kill their blood brothers.

Thanks for this video, it has now given me a understanding of the how WW1 actually began, everyone the knows the Duke got murdered but the background behind I never new, it just shows how complicated Europe has been through the centuries. Luckily we have had longest peacetime in Europe in history, long may the that reign.

Charles I was really Karl, right? I know English-speaking historians prefer French and English names to Karl, Friedrich, Franz, Wilhelm, Ludwig, etc, but these videos are important sources of historical facts, so I just want to get as much accurate info as possible. Other than that, great job as always.

Its really crazy how many ethic groups there are in that region of Europe. Im dont have much knowledge of European ethnicities but its interesting to contrast countries like Spain, France and Italy that all seem to have ethnic unity but this region doesnt.

I appreciate this video a lot. As an American, sometimes I fail to understand European history. This video made me understand the Austro-Hungarian Empire in ways that I hadn't previously. It's wild how the lines of nations are redrawn.

Re the post-WWI Austro-Hungarian split: the wittiest conclusion I've ever read about it was by William Manchester, when he was author-in-residence at Wesleyan College: Austria got the scenery and Hungary got the coal and iron deposits.

0: 29 He proceeds to name ALL the ethnic groups that have their own independent countries today except Slovenes and then adds (while only the area of modern time Slovenia is left with the background yellow): And MANY MANY others. lol

Prince Rudolph committed suicide because his father wouldn't let him marry his commoner girlfriend. The prince shot her before turning the gun on himself. I saw 'Mayerling' - the 1968 remake, not the 1935 original.

Karl I's policies could have made Europe an excellent place, as he based his new federation plan on the US constriction. Instead it devolved into a socialist, communist, and fascist hellhole. Thanks Entente.

3: 46 Franz Joseph was already the king of Hungary. Only the status of the kingdom changed. No longer a substate of the Empire of Austria but an equal partner that was no longer a part of that Empire.

Grandpa: wakes up from coma
Grandson: hey, wanna watch a football match?
Grandpa: sure, which teams are playing?
Grandson: Austria and Hungary
Grandpa: and what is the other country?

We cry about menu changes in restaurants and shortages of PS5 but our problems are nothing compared to the shit world of the past but still they had better sense of community than us.
reply

The problem with the Austro-Hungarian Empire was that in practice it was 80% Austria nad 20% Hungary.
And in the end they started a war and Hungary suffered the most of the damage.

I always wondered why was a Germanic German country, Austria and Hungary (a country which doesn't even speak Indo European languages) were united. Thankyou for clearing my doubts.

These films are very good. Especially in this day and age, it's important to know about historical conflicts and migration patterns to know why we have a lot of the problems today.

I love your videos, the only thing I would suggest is additing some kind of year-counter, from which we would be able to easly know what time the actions took place
