Very big mistake here.
Spain never conquered Portugal. Boy, did they try over centuries, but was never able to.
What happened in 1580 was that we shared the same kings for 60 years, until 1640. Many things were shared with Spain, most notably their enemies, but Portugal kept a lot of authonomy like coin minting, for example.
So no, Spain never conquered Portugal, ever.

Fun Fact: According to a myth, The Gambia got its borders when a British ship sailed through the river and fired cannonballs at both banks. Wherever the balls landed became border markers. In reality, when British vessels were surveilling the river, some African tribes probably attacked the boats, forcing them to fire cannonballs at the attackers.

Another fun fact. You get to meet functionally illiterate people who are nevertheless able to hold conversations in English, French, Wolof and Mandingo. I think Gambia would have been better off as part of Senegal. Well worth a visit. There s pretty much no middle class, everyone s on the hustle, yet pretty safe for tourists.

Portugal didn't ceased to exists. There was a throne vacancy that was claimed by the King of Spain, therefore uniting both Kingdoms for what was called the Iberian Union
That union caused much ruckus around the globe since Spain was an enemy of it's former colony, The Netherlands, and Portugal was an ally.

Portugal was not conquered by Spain. The royal family you meant is likely Antonio I a bsstard son. The king of Spain, Naples and Netherlands was cousin of D Sebastian. When Sebastian died in Morroxo without a heit, the king of Spain had a dinastic union with Portugal

Hello there, Portuguese historian here! I know you did it for brevity and hilarity's sake, but Portugal was not conquered by Spain nor did it stop existing; it was simply ruled by the same monarch as the rest of Spain, whilst mainting its autonomy.

Eventually, the Spanish king decided Portugal was to hard to control, and installed a new, native Portugese born king on the throne of Portugal. So, Spain never conquered Portugal, but for sixty years, the Spanish king was also the king of Portugal.

Basically, there was just nothing really to be gained by joining Senegal in the eyes of the ruling class. They knew they would be marginalized in the confederation so the aristocracy of the Gambia ultimately turned it down, against popular support.

Tragically in 1965 the Gambia took the opportunity afforded by shaking off British sovereignty to switch from driving on the left to driving on the right. This is tragic because they passed up the chance to continue to annoy the French!

Great video! In terms of the theme of why does X exist, a video on San Marino, a teeny tiny European microstate located entirely within Italy and which somehow was never absorbed into Italy during its unification would be quite interesting.

It's interesting that they didn't merge after independence, I'm kinda surprised a country that consists mostly of just the river territory has the power to stay unentangled of it's much larger neighbor.

Fun fact, Portugal was never conquered by Spain! For a while the rightful king of Spain was also the rightful king of Portugal. He was the king of both nations but Portugal was not conquered!

Every single last attempt at a peaceful unification ALWAYS fails because one of the former state's government's refused to give up any power or money. Literally every single time.

So in short, British colonialism created two separate competing economic interests within Senegal and the Gambia and so reunification was against their mutual interest.

Left out smallish fact. In 1471 when Portuguese first found Gambia by Europeans they found an active slave trade. Who captured and sold the African slaves? Other Africans!
