Ten Minute English and British History #17 - The Early Tudors: Henry VIII and the Church of England Daniel: Judging from my other lectures on the subject, it would have been an absolute nightmare living under Henry VIII. He was every bit a narcissist, and even if you scrambled to do everything he wanted, if he ultimately didn't get what he wanted, he blamed you and had you murdered. Wives, ministers, anyone uncomfortable with having their religion changed on them on a whim, everyone's life was forfeit. Henry VII had been a tough ruler but as the last video said, he normally fined rather than murdered and often showed mercy; he was a far more level-headed and pragmatic king.

For all thats made of Henry VIIIs 5, 000 calorie a day diet, thats not actually an unreasonable number of calories to eat if youre engaged in a lot of exercise like Henry VIII would have been before his jousting accident.
A typically diet for a medieval peasant by the early 1500s was actually a pretty hefty 4000 calories. The difference between them and Henry VIII (and modern humans) in his later years is of course how many calories were burned off.

I believe relatively recently they uncovered archaeological evidence to explain why Henry the 8th went from a good king to a looney, prior to the event he was seen as a perfect king, strong, couragous, intelligent, kind but following the event he was fat, ugly and executed everyone, the event in question is a joust where they have uncovered evidence that he partook in the joust and recieved brain damage likely causing the massive shift in personality.

The hilarious part of Henry Tudor telling Elizabeth of York You'll do is that the two actually fell in love with each other, to the point that Henry VII was extremely reluctant to remarry after she died, finally agreeing to so late that he himself died before he actually could.

Yo oversimplified did this but this is more explaining but hard to keep up with although oversimplied's version is simpler and more easy to understandable

You forgot to mention when Catherine of Aragon defended North England border against Scottish king in the Battle of Flodden. You Brits are so good omitting good historical records if it opaque the reputation of your Protestant monarchs.

I like to think of the multiverse theory. There would be an earth like this where everyone is crude squares who only communicates in simple statements on small signs. It would be amazing.

nah, we all know that King Richard's armies won, but he was killed by Prince Edmund 'The Black Adder'. His son Richard VI then reigned for sixteen glorious years.

Yet Henry the 8th remained Catholic in private despite murdering the masses for the exact same 'crime' isn't it telling of the hypocrisy of high society

Fun fact: Lambert Simnel was spared and made a kitchen boy by Henry VII, though remember he was probably haunted for the rest of his life by the battle.

If anyone is interested, there is a book titled Wives of Henry VIII which is awesome. It tells all of this story but over 10 minutes. Very good read!

I like how the executioner had a sword for Anne but an axe for everyone else, because Henry sent for a special executioner from France for her.

Wow, Henry VIII was a monster. I thought he was supposed to be one of England's most revered Kings? He seems like a fat, spoiled man baby.

Love how Henry VIII's fall to death was more loud than other History Matters characters because he was unhealthily obese.

I honestly don't think the king would hold up a sign saying I win that's unrealistic! Also NO is NOT a FUN fact! >: (

Henry loves hiring ministers named Thomas. Could he be trying to get a link to Thomas the Tank Engine?

Heres a question though if Arthur had been king would he have been known as King Arthur I or King Arthur II?
