The First Opium War: History Matters Documentary
video description
Furthermore, the Daoguang Emperor was a dumb ass, he never even once attempted to understand the situation, either from a military or geopolitical standpoint. Had a more capable emperor been around, this would have had much different results.
Sinologist by training, 8 years university based suffering, though my specialty is Qin-Han-Three Kingdoms period, not the Qing.

A few points:
The Qing Dynasty was ruled by the Manchurians. To most Chinese, who are Han, the Qing was not considered a Chinese dynasty. It was seen more like the period of Mongol rule.
Lin Zexu, while a Qing official, was a Han. Part of the reason he confiscated the opium is because he saw the damage it was doing. In fact, part of the reason opium was even being imported was that the Manchurians saw opium as a way of subduing the Han.
Also, Lin is the surname, not Zexu, and he is revered among many Chinese.
Lastly, the reason the Chinese army was so poorly armed is not because of a lack of technology, but it was because the Manchurian didn't want a strong army, since the bulk of the army were Han, and if well-armed, they could more easily overthrow the Manchurians.

Just an FYI I keep popping back to see if you have stopped the special thanks section but honestly it has made me not want to watch these videos any more which is a shame because I love the content and style. I know your patrons are your most important customers but there must be a better way to honor them.

Watching the mighty Chinese Empire being BTFO by the much smaller British forces forced the Japanese to re-examine their policy of isolationism, and the outcome of the First Opium War was a big factor in their accepting Matthew Perry's trading demands in order to gain the technology to defend themselves.

What's missing was that China was refusing to allow import of any British goods, accepting only silver in exchange for silk and tea. This was causing economic disruption in both China and in Europe. Opium was illegal, but it was also the only good available to the British that the Chinese would buy.

After videos like this, I understand a little more why so many modern chinese support their current government. Yeah, it may be brutal, but not as brutal as having England and their european pals plundering your country during one century nonstop

It should be mentioned that the reason Britain decided to make money selling opium (from its empire in what is now Afghanistan) is because they were going bankrupt because of their love of tea (massive trade imbalance with China.

Zexu kinda threatens the British with dozens of bad man's sudden death stories and siege the British mission.
And the record of the British army stats Qing can shoot like a real deal, but facing bayonet charge, they just flee.

So, I guess we're going to ignore Chinese racism, ethnocentrism, and brutal treatment of foreigners prior to this? Seems to me they got what they deserved. A bloated, arrogant bully gets beaten by the nerds.

The British Empire using a ship called Nemesis during a war where they're trying to force another country to let them sell a potent narcotic that's ruining their country is peak Bond villain. The irony.

The issue is not about the opium. The object is to teach the Chinese a lesson on free trade. The Chinese should have open up their trading ports since Mccarthy's diplomatic visit.

If anyone wonders why the Han Chinese are on an omnicidal vendetta against the rest of the human species?
This. This is why.
And the Rape of Nanking.

It was a bit more than see British as equals. They got extrajudiciality meaning that British traders and other citizens were above Chinese law.
