Ten Minute History - The French Wars of Religion Short Documentary
video description
Here is what John Calvin outrageously wrote on the source of all evil: thieves, murderers, and other EVILDOERS, ARE instruments of divine providence, being EMPLOYED BY THE LORD HIMSELF TO EXECUTE THE JUDGMENTS WHICH HE HAS RESOLVED TO INFLICT. Institutes I, 17, 5. Rapists would surely come under the umbrella of other evildoers, so Calvins argument here is that God commands rape (along with murder and theft) as a form of judgement/punishment in the victim. Consider Calvin again: The devil, and the whole train of the ungodly, are, in all directions, held in by the hand of God as with a bridle, so that they can NEITHER CONCEIVE any MISCHIEF, nor PLAN what they have conceived, nor how they may have planned, MOVE a single finger to PERPETRATE, unless in so far as He permits, nay, unless in so far as He COMMANDS; that they are not only bound by His fetters but are even FORCED to do Him service. Institutes I, 17, 11. Here Calvin makes clear that the command to rape comes from God and that the attacker is then forced to rape the victim as a service to God.
Now, listen to John Wesleys two responses to this insanity.
First, You represent God as worse than the devil; more false, more cruel, more unjust. But you say you will prove it by Scripture. Hold! What will you prove by Scripture? That God is worse than the devil? It cannot be. Whatever that Scripture proves, it can never prove this; whatever its true meaning be, this cannot be its true meaning. Do you ask, What is its true meaning then? If I say, I know not, you have gained nothing; for there are many Scriptures the true sense whereof neither you nor I shall know till death is swallowed up in victory. But this I know, better it were to say it had no sense at all, than to say it had such a sense as this. It cannot mean, whatever it means besides, that the God of truth is a liar. Let it mean what it will, it cannot mean that the judge of all the world is unjust. No Scripture can mean that God is not love, or that His mercy is not over all His works. Wesleys Journals, Vol. VII, p. 383.
Second, against this type of outrageous Calvinistic claim maligning Gods character on another occasion, Wesley famously responded, Your God is my Satan. (This was Wesleys response to a Calvinist who had claimed that God caused a child of a particular pastor to be drowned to death because her father was preaching error.

and both sides in this scrap were so full of the love of God that they were willing to die for their faith?
not really. they were willing to kill
many people look to the wars ofrelgion as disproof that christianity is true
but the fact is that those who hated and murdered in the name of whether the just shall live by faith alone, or not, did not have any faith to speak of, so their religion, ON BOTH SIDES, by biblical standards, was worthless
and yet as one who holds protestant doctrine i am supposed to look back on this abomination and be proud of it?

Hello everyone. Just to let you know that next week is the first week in which there's no more preset video length anymore and the new formats come into effect. As of next week there'll be 2 videos per week but they'll be shorter than ten minutes (expect 3-6) for 90%, some will be longer than 10 though.
Tuesday's episode will be 'The Opium Wars' and Friday's will be 'The Great Terror: Stalin's Purges'. Hope you enjoy the new content format as I'm very excited for it.

Now you all know why Henry IV was the only king whose death was genuinely mourned by the French people. As his decision to convert voluntarily to Catholicism kicked the ground out from under the Catholic League fanatics, while the Edict of Nantes extended religious toleration to ALL religions.
His assassin, Francis Ravaillac (rhymes with maniac) stabbed Henry through the jugular, as he was waiting in a traffic jam in Paris, to cross the Seine-Fun Fact.

Slightly ahead of this period, but what is the modern legacy of Richelieu and Mazarin among the French? Popular opinion in America seems to be ruled by a series of Three Musketeers movies that become increasingly divorced from reality, but the truth is that the two cardinals were responsible for France becoming preeminent in Europe.
Just curious.

The big winners of these war of religion are Switzerland, the city of London, the fledgeling American colonies, etc. The exodus of the French Hugenots braught their craftmanship to the lands that welcomed them. I am Swiss from a Huguenot family and there are many famous swiss brands (notably in the watch industry) that come from Huguenots families.

France has a deadly tendancy to feudalism. This is why the authorities are so centralized. The War f religions began as a real war of religions but once Francis II died, it became a political feud dsguised as a religious one. The Guise family ( Mary Stuart mother was a Guise) was so hated that many lords converted to protestantism to fight them.

This is the historical context that made Richelieu into who he was, and enabled him to do what he did. France had been devastated by sectarian civil war. After all that, a domestic policy based on religious tolerance and a foreign policy that put national interest above religious allegiance suddenly had a whole new level of appeal to it.

A very (very) bloody war.
Afaik (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, prior WW1 only the 30 Years War and the Revolutionary/Napoleonic wars, had a larger death toll in European history.
The death toll of the French War of Religion was 4 times higher than of the 7 Years War.

When I listen to A world of ice and fire they mention the Andals and the Faith of the seven. So many moments of religious zealotry and rebellion. So many massacres in the name of religion that I started thinking Grrm was jaded. Then I listened to actual history

Actually the fourth war ended because Polish delegation was in France to give their throne to Henry. But they wanted equality of Protestants and Catholics in Poland. So as a window dressing France just ended the war temporarily.

Or as the Four Musketeers put it, You mean we're at war because they want to say their prayers in French while we say our prayers in Latin?
Oh, Porthos, I'm surprised at you. That's what religious wars are all about.

Oh man. 8 wars all ending in stalemate. Can you imagine how frustrating that must have been for everyone. They lost countless lives. for nothing. No gain, no win, just a bunch of violence for violence sake.

Imagine all those deaths because one side says its way of worshipping an imaginary sky wizard is better than the other.
Religion should outright be outlaw. The true heresy is religion.

French wars of religion would continue for 100 years more but the turning point against the Hugenots was the capture of La Rochelle and France's win over England in the 1627-29 war

A lot of people dont understand why America still has strong religious devotion compared to other western nations.
Because American religions didn't do this.
