The Hungarian Revolution of 1956: History Matters Documentary
video description
The USSR had been pulling troops out of Hungary, unsure of how to handle the situation. Then the Suez Crisis happened when Israel, France and the UK invaded Egypt.
The USSR used this to divert attention from Hungary and theatrically threatened to fire nuclear missiles at France and the UK, scaring everyone that WW3 might start. With the diversion successful, thats when the Soviets sent in the tanks!
This was another reason why Eisenhower was so angry at the British, French, and Israelis.

My grandad was one of those many thousands of people to flee Hungary during the revolution and he revisited many times years later to see family and friends. He went to the old Secret Police HQ many years after the fall of the USSR whilst it was a museum and saw that on the walls were memorials and names of people tortured and executed by the Secret Police and he cried because he recognised a name as being one of his old friends that he didnt know had been killed.

Of all the countries that were made into soviet puppet states, the only ones that deserved it were East Germany, Hungary and Romania; Poland and Czechoslovakia were victims, and Bulgaria, despite being part of the axis, didn't declare war on the USSR. Hungary and Romania were full members of the axis, and specially Hungary supported many german atrocities in name of their chauvinistic claims.

The Hungarian secret police (AVH, originally AVO) fired into unarmed crowds. One example was in a town called Mosonmagyarovar. 52 were killed including children and a 18 month old baby. This organization was deeply feared and hated by the Hungarian people. During the revolution, many AVH were lynched. One of the victories of the revolution was the disbanding of the AVH.

History Matters, how do you mean the aftermath didn't really see any particularly brutal repressions? - Sorry, but I have to call on this, because if anything, well this is a particularly brutal mistake! I can understand your oversimplified-style, but the very least You better cut out this sentence, for the sake of the truthfulness.

The aftermath didn't see any particularly brutal repressions. Is this a joke? I'd recommend to visit the House of Terror in Budapest and see what you consider not particularly brutal. Hint: waterboarding seems like a walk in the park compared to what was happening there.

During and after the system change when communism ended in Hungary, Imre Nagy was looked upon as a hero in Hungary, however nowdays his image is controversial because he too had a part in estabilishing communist dictatorship in Hungary after 1945.

The demonstrations started in solidarity with the Polish strikers. Workers and ordinary citizens joined the crowd and moved to the radio station where the cowardly secret police fired into the crowd. And the rest is history.

I'd like to apologise to any Hungarians watching for butchering your language. I tried, though.
Also, next week's videos will be 'The July Revolution' and 'The Fall of the Knights Templar'.

I would be interested in a video about the Soviet-Yugoslav split of 1948 and why Stalin didn't send the tanks into Belgrade like Khrushchev did into Budapest.

BUT you forgot to mention that initially soviet troops left the country and went back only after protesters started mass killings of communists and secret services.

Post WW2 Romania is a rich topic to explore. Occupied directly by the Red Army until 1959. Ceaucescu biding his time until he could seize power. Oh, the mediocrity!
