Also, probably because curiosity wasn't running high in the Sultans' minds at the time since they had every luxury, therefore they didn't have the will to invest in such expeditions. And on top of that, there was no chance for someone to make the journey and take the risk without sourcing the funds. Problem was that investing in ideas and expeditions wasn't a popular thing in the Ottoman Empire. In fact, if you look at how the stock market came to be, you'd see that it started by the Dutch so that the sailors can get the money they need to make the trip with the promise of bringing back goods/gold etc.

the Ottomans weren't great sailors anyway, and that's an understatement. they came from central Asia without ever crossing an ocean and knew how to fight on land. Imagine they invaded Anatolia in 1071 and took Cyprus in 1570! They invaded the Balkans in 1320 but took Crete in 1669! Not to mention they created a huge empire of three continents but were never able to take Corfu from Venice. So when Christopher Columbus arrived in America the Ottomans didn't even have control over the Aegean islands, so it's more a question of couldn't rather than wouldn't.

As a Turk, let me explain why. Power poisoning. He was so strong that he was in the 16th century. He did not consider it worth following the developments.
It wasn't good to be so strong either. He had no rivals and did not even see the need to open an embassy.
Despite everything, we have achieved incredible things. We always wish it wasn't so strong. Arrogance is not good. But it is a fact that he has achieved great things. If we judge it outside of today's moral judgments, it was quite successful for its era.

Ottomans never colonized. Colonizing means subjugating a people to capitalize on their wealth and resources. The Ottomans (when they followed the shariah) gave their wealth wherever they went or have white supremecists conveniently forgotten Andalusia, balkans and India? The outer sides of the Ottoman empire were always the most flourishing places on earth. No wonder it expanded as quickly as it did.

Ottomans never colonised any land as the European powers did. This is the main reason.
Ottomans left free all minorities;
1. Which religion they want to believe
2. Which language they want to speak
3. And what kind of production style they should follow.
4. Ottomans only charged taxes nothing else.
Even today western civilasition couldn't come close to these principles.

Long story short, Ottomans aren't as bloodthirsty as history make them be, they were just satisfied with their lands, not like the vikings and Columbus and later people who massacred the actual people of America, the so called natives of the land, those who liked freedom and wore feathers on their heads and animal hides, the current Americans are hybrids from different nationalities XD

The content is very poor and doesn't reveal any historical information. In addition the map is wrong. They extended their influence till Xinjiang where people are speaking turkish. They discovered the south east of Asia (Malysia, Indonesia, . Their purpose was not colonize or exploit the people and countries, as it was done when discovering America, they aimed for peaceful world.

The Ottoman empire didn't actually colonize Ionian islands in Greece, which are WRONGLY shown in red in this video (they had always been under venetian rule, how would they colonize America?
It was a middle eastern style continental power, Navy and seafaring culture was unknown to the ottomans (and still is unfamiliar to Turks, to be fair)

He who uses Ottomans and Colonise in the same sentence is not a Historian and clearly doesn't know what he say - Stanford J. Shaw
The reaction by Bernard Lewis against same situation was Do you ever heard PAX OTTOMANA? How do you explain that more than 40 languages are still alive like Arabic, Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian, etc.

Hi all. This episode was late (and less animated) than usual because Final Cut Pro decided it wanted to die and so I had to delete all of my current ongoing projects (yay.
Next week's episodes will be:
'Did Appeasement work? ' and 'How did Ethiopia stay independent during the Scramble for Africa? '.

Geography is our destiny. Turks became muslim because of geography, we conquer east meditarien because of mongols at the beginning. Now around us there are 1 billion cristian countries and 1 billion muslim countries but still we are feeling lonely. There is something going seriously wrong.

If they had suceeded in conquering Western Europe they would had definitely done the colonisation instead of them.
Remember they attacked italian cities, laid siege to Vienna multiple times. Last one was in 1683.
While other muslims had almost the whole iberian peninsula.

Ottomons usually conquered and fought lands that posed a threat or went to war with them. America didn't make sense back then because America wasn't involved in world politics like it is now so it wasn't a threat and second America didn't try to go to war with them.

The OTTOMANS never colonialized any area they were in charge of. People were free to speak their language free to wear their traditional clothes. free to keep their traditions and free to keep their faith. That was seen as a threat for the west.

It's mind blowing most people don't understand the characteristics of each empire/civilization. Ottomans then and now are incapable of offering something trully valuable to the world. Their main goal is to destroy and commit genocides.

Well it did severely affect them as USA, helped UK and France to defeat and divide Ottoman Empire. A colony in USA or it's surroundings would have greatly effected the allegiance of USA to UK and France.

I think an Englishman made this video because he used the term colonization. That's all the British know. In the Ottoman's book, it is not written to colonize, but to conquer. That's the whole reason.
