New Courland: When Latvia Built an Empire Documentary Keefan1978: It's really wrong to call it a 'Latvian' empire. It's just projecting modern day concepts into historical times. Courland was effectively a German state, despite the fact majority of it's rural population being Latvian (and, to a lesser degree, Livonian. Courland was run by the Germans for the Germans - much of it's wealth came from the fact that from 1618-1648 the Thirty Years' War was raging in Germany and many German-speakers fled to the safe haven of Courland and Courland itself gained wealth from producing everything the warring parties needed.

The real Tragedy with the teaching of of the history of my country Trinidad and Tobago is that iit is usually done from the perspective of Trinidad or Tobago as a part of Trinidad while the history of Tobago is far more diverse and in my opinion far more interesting. I wonder how many of my own countryfolk are even aware of this story.

Man I wished that more European countries had colonies (ofc there still would be massacres and slavery) but most of the America and Africa is covered with Portuguese, Spanish, English, French, and Dutch descendent and culture making a lack of diversity (except in Latin America)

The issue here is that you say Latvians. Courland was formed by the Livonian people, unlike Latvian, Livonian are Finno-Ugric, and used to speak a quite interesting Finnic language, something alike old Estonian, but more Vidilistic.

00: 01: 13 Interesting map of the Dutch Republic. You correctly left out most of the current southern provinces of the Netherlands, but did include Flevoland, which would remain open see for more than 300 years.

Courland was not Latvia or a Latvian state. The Latvians living there - though they were the majority - did not have much of a say and the duke probably didn't speak any Latvian.

A Latvian I worked with when talking about intelligence once said ah but the president in Latvia said our flag has 3 colours so there should be no requirement for me to be smart

Latvia tried one last time with a man from Queens in the New World named George Constanza, but after a brief period of promise it also fell by the wayside.

If you for some reason count Poland as colony of Germany and Latvia as colony of Poland and Tobago as colony of Latvia Tobago would be a cococolololonynyny

I've lived in the Caribbean most my life and never knew this to be a part of Tobagonian history. Its a beautiful island, with an interesting history.

It's nice to see a genuinely concerned, pragmatic ruler for once, had Jacob been granted a more powerful nation, he could have been a great figure.

I swear to God Baltics are like Jerusalem. Always someone wants a piece of it. Damn you Sweden for ruining our plans.

I just thought Lativa was a fictional country from Marvel comics. I DIDN'T know they had settled the new world.
reply

Do they try to give Latvians a western-style guilt trip over colonialism or do the Latvians just say fvck off?
reply

Wait Latvia actually exist! I thought it was just some fictional country that regularly pops up in fiction.
reply

Imagine if Sweden didn't annexed Latvia. I know that their empire will not go to far but it will be cool.

This is so funny to me. It sounds like something someone does for shits and giggles in a vic2 or eu4 game
