My father was in Moscow when all of this went down, getting his papers in order to join us in the United States (long story. Needless to say this was incredibly scary from our point of view here, not so much from his (I didn't even see the tanks, especially since what little information was available here was in English, which none of us could understand very well, being here for a grand total of 6 months.

I don't think hardline communist is a necessary description. Simply it was an attempted counter coup by communists against anti-communist counter-revolutionaries. Economic devastation from capitalist reforms and 7 million deaths later we end up with Putin. That worked out well.

I'll tell you this. There'd have been a lot less wars in the world if this coup succeeded & the USSR was saved. I'm also certain NATO analysts would agree. The fall of the USSR lead to chaos. They'd of much rather kept the admitedly cold enemy they knew about.

Ironic enough, the day after the coup started was the day Gorbachev was supposed to return back to Moscow to sign the New Union treaty, meaning that if they didn't do the coup, the USSR would've still likely existed today, abet not as a communist state
