Portugal's Monarchy pretend-disappeared and we were force-fed an American backed panacea whereby we actually believed we lived in a democracy starting April 1974, but that was a Fake! The same little corrupt Monarch we booted out, and his masonic cronies still run the show in the background. Too bad so many ignorant Portuguese that yap, yap, yap about the Past and do Absolutely NOTHING to Positively Change the garbage imposed on ALL of us daily. Time to suplpant the Pride with Actions! When will this end?

The Portuguese monarchy was weakened when the Crown passed out of the male lie of the House of Braganza to the German Saxony=Coburg line descended from Queen Maria II. The loss of the Brazil colony also turned public opinion against the royal house. Brazil became a republic in 1889 with the overthrow of the Emperor by the military after his daughter liberated all the peasants. Republican coup d'etat in Brazil encouraged republican rebellion in Portugal.

It is curious how portugals subservient relation with the UK is similar to brazil's with USA, unfortunately. Many people blame it on brazillian culture the shame of foreign subservience when in fact we aquired it from the portugueses who influenced the morals of Brazil in it's foundation, by being part of the brazillian elite, and this change of master correlates to the change of world leader from UK>>>USA.

As a Swiss guy, I'm kinda curious to know which kind of royals did we kick out? Is it a reference to the Holy Roman Empire and the 3 primitive cantons who declared their independance? Or much later, in 1848 when modern Switzerland was created, removing from power the oligarchy in certain cantons? We never truly had any kings or queens here as far as I know.

Not criticizing, but Portugal became a fascist state soon after the monarchy was dissolved. That didnt get mentioned but Portugal under Salazar is as important to our history as Franco to Spain. The current Portuguese republic has only been around since the Carnation Revolution in the 70s

And yet many Portuguese boast about the long treaty of alliance with Britain which as we see in this video it looks like it only works one way, the way of Britain. The Portuguese have been the puppets of the British but they still dont know it, poor Portuguese, lol.

Their first president was A Fonzi? Damn that place must have been cool as hell. Also I live in the state of Ohio. We are about 10% larger than Portugal in population and 255% more productive in terms of GDP but we never had a Fonzi as governor

Such a depressing decadence into a failed republic. Who on their right mind would surely believe that republican democracy was a good idea in a country that ever since its first day of age had a king and a monarch for one thousand years.
reply

Why do you draw the Portuguese people as darker than the British? Are you racist or something?
This is especially egregious regarding Afonso Henriques (whom you refer to as Afonso I, the son of a Burgundian knight.

reply

Trivia: right after the republican revolution, Boaventura rebellion happened in Timor Leste because the liurais (local kings) do not like the republican flag and want to keep the monarchy flag.
reply

Portugal should get back its monarchy. Monarchies are so much more dignified than tacky republics such as France, Ireland or Germany. The military was wrong to side with the republicans.
reply

Fun fact, the national anthem of Portugal at one time (when the Republic was inaugurated) one part said against the Brits, we march! this part replaced Brits to cannons on later years
reply

What the hell, did that guy not know that a British ultimatum is an opening negotiation position? Even between friends you're meant to throw back some demands and shit.
reply

The Prime Ministers were the king's friends and did as he asked but their parties had different names so were totally different.
Hey, that sounds familiar for some reason.

1908, Portuguese King is assassinated by revolutionaries, Europe: I sleep
1914, Austrian Archduke is assassinated by revolutionaries, Europe: Peace was never an option

reply

Portugal still has a royal house: The House of Braganza is lead by Dom Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza. His son Afonso is one of the better looking male royals in Europe.
reply

A constitutional monarchy, like that in Great Britain, would have solved many of Portugal's problems and no doubt would have prevented years of dictatorship.
reply

Damm someone talking about Portugal iam actually shocked. I normally just see things about spain or other countries. As a portuguese this made a smile on my face XD
reply

The dutch were the second to abolish the monarch Philips from Spain after 80 years of war. The Republic following were the glory days of the Netherlands.
reply

And now, over 100 years later, Portugal is still a corrupt political shitshow.
No wonder we get stepped over by other countries.
