Why does Lesotho Exist? Documentary

video description

Lesotho is one of the few enclave countries in the world (being a country entirely within another country) and given who it lived amongst it's fairly shocking that it managed to survive until the modern day. So how did Lesotho do it? Why does Lesotho exist?

Mosotho born and bred and who actually went to varsity to study our History, I personally feel like you only mentioned like 30% of why we exist as a nation and even then I feel this video is a misrepresentation of us. If you like perhaps you can contact me on my email so I can give you more information on our country.
This video does not say anything about the humiliation both the Boers and the Brits suffered in the 1879 -1881 Gun War which was also a Civil War that kept the country together and how it was at the time the most expensive (highly financed) War the Brits engaged and lost in that period. yes our founder and King Moshoeshoe may not have went to war himself but his won so many with his troops.
Sidebar, when Otto von Bismarck Germany then Prasia he was inspired by the legend and story of King Moshoeshoe I, our history is far richer than than this 120 seconds video.

And, of course 'Apartheid' always has to be brought into it.
Well, in the days of Apartheid were homelands, or Bantustans, for the various black ethnic groups. That was some land for each. Some were planning to get independence, or rather almost independence. A few did, for instance Transkei (1st one) and Bophuthatswana (2nd one. A few that were next to a neighbouring country, and the same ethnic group, were planning to get incorporated into that neighbour. One was Basotho Qwaqwa, being next to Lesotho.
Even with Bophuthatswana, it consisted of various parts not adjoining. There was talk about the parts being joined together, one part thus falling away, the parts also adjoining Botswana, and then being incorporated into Botswana.

This video actually surprised me, as I would think the British would hold onto the land, but maybe they had other areas they needed to take care of first. But even after that, they left it be, which seems very uncharacteristic of Britain since they usually seize every opportunity to expand.

I give credit to the video but to be said there's it's not fairly/entirely correct. .
What's worse is that he is basically butchering all the Basotho names.
Not cool

Lesotho -> Lesutow
Kiribati -> Kiribasss
I love learning how to pronounce the names of these small nations and then correct people when they pronounce them wrong xD

Something not mentioned is that the main reason Britain couldn't take over Lesotho is because its essentially a giant mountain fortress like Switzerland.

2: 34 the white dude in the background lmao.
Im watching this twice to get a better grasp, and im noticing way more subtle details in the animation!

We like to leave nice, neat maps behind us, but occasionally the locals are revolting! . Attributed to Major-General Sir British Empire CMG, VC, DSO,

I wonder if the brits said this is to make things safer when they confiscated all thier firearms. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Here in South Africa the pronunciation of Lesotho would have the last part pronounced as 'to' and not as 'toe'. It is like with Basotho.

No mention of the crazy geography? The real reason was that it was a mountainous region the British simply couldn't conquer

This is maybe a perfect 3 minute example of how disgusting and comically messed up the colonization of Africa was.
reply

Pretorian is not used. Pretoria is a city, but name not used like Durbanites for people from Durban or Capetonians etc.
reply

This was the first place in Africa I ever went (with the exception of SA cause we went through Joburg to get there)
reply

Its crazy how yall played with people's lives like that. Also, let me help you with your pronunciation buddy

One weird trick to escape British rule, colonizers hate it!
The trick is: be too expensive to rule over.

reply

Literally any country: Hey Britain can you please protect us?
Britain: Sure I can annex you if you want

reply

Lies you just talking about your grandfathers trying to colonize u not black mate so u don't know shir
reply

So, technically it's not a country within a country, just one surrounded entirely by another country.
