Sometimes countries break up, like Britain and Ireland, Britain and America or Britain and most other places. And one such major break up was when Norway and Sweden went their own way in 1905. But what caused this split? Why did the two break up?

Norway have been an integrate part of the Danish Kingdom since time immemorial, they joined Sweden only as war spoil after the Napoleonic wars and not of their own free will. By 1905 They voted for whether they would become independent or remain with Sweden 368'208 people voted to leave the union and 184 voted to stay. There have never been a referendum closer to complete consensus anywhere before or after.
Whether or not to become a monarchy was less unanimous, here only 79% voted for it.

IM LATE. This comment section is a feud between Norwegians and Swedes on which country made the union break up. As a Norwegian you know my standpoint. As a more important note this discussion is too focused on the local geopolitical scale and historical timeline. Wouldnt you agree that we need to go back to some hundred years before the Kalmar union to explain the different perspectives from each country.
reply

A Nordic union was almost formed in 1864. With the support of Otto von Bismarck, Napoleon III and Queen Victoria, Swedish and Danish elite conspired to kidnap the King of Denmark and install the King of Sweden, Carl XV, as the king of a Nordic union. Recent finds shows that it was only hours away from actually happening.
reply

Sad really.
Swedes can only walk Down Hill walking East and Up Hill walking West.
Norwegians can only walk Up Hill going East and Down Hill going West.
So it's the mountains between them that divide these otherwise similar Ex-Vikings

reply

who cares if they break up or repatch these countries are providing money to the world for all the missionaries and destroying others culture and religion through out their money.
they are bad people who is also blind-

reply

Well, since then Norway has de facto violated its constitution and given up sovereignty by joining NATO, EEA and signing a number of intl. agreements, so the only positive is that at least it isn't Swedes ruling Norway.
reply

My mother who was full blooded Swedish, said that Norwegians were just Swedes with their brains beat out. oddly enough. I've heard Norwegians say the same about Swedes. Too bad they can't just play well together
reply

Short version: They never should have been stuck together in the first place, and the common people of Sweden were absolutely bro-tier in their efforts not to go to war over the whole mess.
reply

It's very different opinion from vid you did on Hungarians losing 63% population. No it was similar to this union that smaller countries got their independence like Norway from Sweden
reply

Too fast talking. Won't go in to many brains unless reduce speed. History must be told at a nice pace so the listeners can imagine that world while trying to catch. Regards.

Norway did not want their Petro wealth to be showered on Iraqi and Somali mass migrants by hard Left ( but nevertheless racist) Swedish politicians.
reply

I think the reason Norway and Sweden broke up was when combined, they somewhat resemble a very. efficiently engineered structure, let's say.
reply

Two things: First, the Made in Albania pillbox bunker sign is brilliant. Second, doesnt a 99. 9% vote seem a little fishy? As in North Korean fishy?
reply

The Swedish people threatened to defect from the armed forces and go into a general strike so the war didn't happen.
Will you look at that.

reply

That independence lasted a mere 35 years before Norway was invaded and occupied by Germany. And the Germans stayed until 1945
reply

I 'd guess that Sweden has wished they and Norway were united ever since the discovery of oil in the North Sea in the '70's.
reply

A thousand Swedes ran through the fields chased by one Norwegian, the dust kicked up by the Swedes made a city called Copenhagen
reply

I think it will split up even more.
Maybe a wall between the two countries.
Because sweden 2022 is total chaos.

reply

I live in norrland (north of sweden) and i would rather be living with norway and finland than with the south swedish
reply

Look how tiny Denmark is -- how the heck could they rule over such vast territories like Norway, and even Greenland?
