The Scramble for Africa saw many of Europe's great powers occupy and colonise much of the continent. Yet Spain, despite its long imperial history and status as a European power, barely got anything. Less than Belgium even. So why was this the case?

Spain did have a claim on African territories based on El Pardo treaty of 1778, by which Portugal 'gave' to Spain the Gulf of Guinea in exchange for most of Brazil. However, Spain was in pityful condition for the whole 19th century. After expelling Napoleon's troops, the restored disastrous king Fernando VII brought the 100. 000 sons of Saint Louis to crash the liberal rebellion and killed every intelligent person remaining in the country, he even restored inquisition. We also had all the indepence wars with the American colonies and 3 civil wars of our own. To finish the century, Spanish-American war stripped what was left of the empire, too much to deal with to care about Africa. Moreover, there was some kind of 'Reconquista' obsession for Morocco, when it would have been way easier to enforce the lands explored by Manuel Iradier in the 1870s, including most of Gabon and south of Cameroon. What is nowadays Equatorial Guinea was Spanish colony because of this exploration and not because of a treaty with France, as the video states.

John 3. 16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

1. Spain stopped being relevant in the early 1800s, when its king (of french descendance) allowed Napoleonic troops into the peninsula to fight the english in Portugal. That was the end of Spain as a superpower right there. They had been declining for a century and a half by then (by now far behind the english and the french, but were still an important empire.
2. Spain was never broke, it just had the worst and most corrupt people running the country. The more money they had the worse use they made of it. Its still the same issue to this day, even with 45 years of democracy its now politicians instead of kings doing all the thieving.

The Spanish Sahara was the last of Spain's colonies to get free from Spanish rule in 1975, when Franco passed away. Unfortunately, Spain's withdrawal from the Spanish Sahara was pretty messy. Spain should had declared the Spanish Sahara as independent and called to elections, but because Spain did not do the, apparently as per UN standards, the Spanish Sahara is still a Spanish colony, at least in paper. Spain's withdrawal from the Spanish Sahara marks the end of a 500-year old empire born in the late 15th century.

The only country that was colonized by Spain and uses Spanish as an everyday language in Africa is Equatorial Guinea, Equatorial Guinea started as a Portuguese colony in 1493 and remained under Portuguese control until 1778, after San Idelfonso and Pardo treaties, where it was agreed that the Portuguese would give the Spanish control over Bioko Island and parts of the Gulf of Guinea's shore and the Spanish would give Portuguese control over Sacramento Colony which is now a city in Uruguay.

I want to know why Europe is not paying reparations? Like seriously. I want to know the history of Africa and other colonized people wanting to get compensation and how Europe continuously denies it. i just learned about how France extorted payment from Haiti after enslaving the people and bringing them there. and Haiti want reparations and I am assuming nothing has come from it.

I always ask that question over and over. They colonized the Americas (Carribean, Central America) and the Philippines and even the U. S. which has many cities that start with San & Santa to say the least. being from Cal Yu will find San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, San Juan Capistrano, San Bernardino, San Antonio Santa Rosa, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Santa Fe etc etc.

The Congo was first meant to be part of the Dutch empire. But during the Berlin Conference they (the British) concluded that the Dutch would be too economically powerful owning the Congo and the Dutch East Indies. Instead, they gave it to Belgium, which at that point was the only Western European country without any colonial possession

My understanding is that Belgium did not initially get any territory in Africa but rather it was the Belgian king who took possession of the Congo in 1885 as his personal possession. It was eventually handed over to Belgium in 1908 as a result of Leopold's brutal regime.

First half of the video I was like 'nah bro, the lack of territorial claims are not the real reason', bu then you did mention the truth of it that it was because Spain was in decline and simply didn't have the power and influence to get more territories in Africa

When Empress Charlotte of Mexico, sister to the Belge King, died at the beginning of the 20th century, she was one of the richest persons in Europe. One her main sources of income came from investments made by her brother, in the Belge Congo.

Good thing they didn't get much from Africa, otherwise they would have ended up like modern day France i. e filled with immigrants from sub saharan africa and north african nations

Spain: I have the World's largest colonial Empire!
Napoleon: Hold my croissant.
Napoleon again: I am the World's most successful conqueror!
Spain: Hold my tortilla (con cebolla.

That Portugal's side of the world deal was so bad for Spain like not only is Spain farther from the new world and closer to Africa but also Portugal just gets the entirety of Asia
reply

Spain was too busy raping and pillaging South America. You want to know Spain's legacy to the world, it's called Latin America, a cesspool of poverty, ignorance and violence.
reply

You could say Spain is the ultimate winner of the Scramble for Africa since it still has Ceuta, Melilla and the Canary Islands while the other European powers kept nothing

My OCD kicks in when I see Criteria #1. Criteria, like media, is plural. Criterion #1 would be more accurate.
Oh, and I adore History Matters videos!

If Spain didn't sign that treaty I'm sure Spain would have control of most of north Africa and in the central it would probably own Gabon, and most of the Congo.
reply

You mean besides that chunk of desert and the place Argentina no longer wanted? Why'd Spain even get that is the better question. For pity's sake, probably. xD
reply

Better to get a little of Africa than nothing at all. Plus we are the only nation that actually has territories left in continental Africa (Ceuta y Melilla.
