Britain and France haven't historically been the best of friends yet nowadays they are firm allies and there hasn't been a war between them in over two hundred years. But why did this age-old rivalry and mutual hatred come to an end?

I see many comments saying both are now strong allies? I don't get it. Like when they went behind our back and negociated a multi-billion dollars deal with australia for the USA (we already had a deal with australia and started making their submarines, the US used their military as a lever to steal it, or when the Anglo-Saxon culture started cancelling France culture (renaming french fries to freedom fries for the US, and making fun of France like ooooh France surrender for both of them) because we didn't want to join them on a war in middle east based on forged evidences by the CIA. Nowadays we know these evidences were forged, the US and england campaign in irak was a fiasco and led to the creation of Isis.

I would like to point out that there was one moment in history where France and Britain were allies. In 1672 they allied to attack the Dutch Republic. In fact they even allied with some German states. This is called Het Rampjaar or the Disaster Year in the Netherland. This is to my knowledge the only time the French, British and Germans allied until after WW2. Imagine how much they feared/hated the Dutch that these countries would join forces. Anyway, after that a dutch guy became king of England and this short lived alliance was over.

Whenever I think about England and France I imagine Gimli (England) and Legolas (France.
England: I WOULD NOT BE SEEN DEAD BY A FRENCHMAN!
France: Nor would the French accept aid by such a foul creature
England: Never thought Id fight dying side by side with a Frenchman
France: how about side by side with a friend?
England: aye, I can do that walks over and stands next to America
France: -_-

In the 19th century an English minister said that Britain would support/try to get along with whoever controlled the mouth of the Rhine.
Don't forget the Anglo-French conflicts in North Africa/Morocco and Algiers around the US- led Operation Torch, and between Israel/Palestine and Lebanon.
Are you going to do a video on the Auld Alliance between France & Scotland versus England?

Look at the history books. Whenever Britain fought the French we were top dog. For 500 years from Agincourt to the Battle of Waterloo, Britain went from strength to strength and gained the greatest empire the world has ever known. The minute we start getting chummy with the garlic chewers, within three short decades were buggered. Captain Edmund Blackadder

Because accurate History does indeed Matter.
. you should know for 2k+ years, Imperial China used traditional Chinese characters. The simplified characters used in this video at 0: 00: 51 would not have been used in official capacities until Communist rule, which didnt start until 1949.

Its not a massive deal but, the depiction of Britain here is technically incorrect, British itself is the mainland island (Scotland, England and Wales) and the UK is Britain and Northern Ireland, so Britain does not include Northern Ireland

As an English person. I'd say allies is a bit strong. We both are in nato but that's where it ends. Let's be honest. If another country attacked France I bet the British armed forces would accidentally launch a few missiles just for fun
reply

I'm neither English nor French but from my perspective they seem like they were brothers separated at birth. They enjoy a good fight with one another until a third wheel enters the fray. Hey German, get the Hell out of our sandbox.

How to sum video (and British French relationship in general) in a simple dialogue
British: I hate you
French: I hate you too
British: but that guy looks scary. He can beat us both. So. friends?
French: Agreed

reply

So if Germany had not invaded Belgium on their way into France under the Schlieffen Plan, would Britain still have entered the war against Germany, or would they have sat it out?
reply

I especially have the impression that it's the English who talk the most about this relationship, whether it's good or bad. In France, we don't care
reply

Expand the segment to account for De Gaulle's hostility to Britain, the eclipse of New France, French aid to the American war of independence.
reply

The biggest error Britain ever made was allying with France. The French are our rivals and never our friends, their interests are rarely ours.
reply

In fact, it s a question of british diplomacy. They choose to be allied against the strongest. And germany became the strongest in 1871.
reply

They still have a rivalry. When Sherlock Holmes was created the French created Lupin. When Harry Potter was created Tara Duncan came next
reply

My question is, does all english students get this as history explained not the same way but with the same point being made? Thats sad
reply

another reason was that when germany reunited into the german empire they thought germany would become to powerful
reply

Let's not forget the name of the man who, with tremendous efforts, united the two ex foes: James Bisonette
