I'd like to add that south Africa is about as far away from the equator as the Netherlands. Which is why Dutch crops worked in that region and most African and South European crops did not. They infact made South Africa habitable which other countries did try before. There was a nomad people already bit more to the north. They actually worked together with the Dutch to make it habitable. Saharan Africans came later and gained territory while fighting a war against the Dutch and the natives. Those natives did not have black skin but more olive toned. The current black skinned folk are colonists that took over South Africa. Almost nearly genociding the native population.

put all of Europe's political machinations of the 18th and 19thc into a blender, hit SPIN for 10 minutes and you get this slop; is it any wonder that soldiers sent to fight in the colonies ditched old Europe, old George, and simply disappeared into the 'new world' (I'm in NJ, most of our state is covered in what is called the Pine Barrens, and had been a refuge for defecting Hessians and English soldiers, they could hide out there unmolested for years.

One question remains though: Wouldn't they need at least a small big somewhere on the African coast as a safe harbour to make sure they could sail to Indonesia safely Or would they just use harbours of other European nations No anxieties of them ever being closed off by Britan, France or Belgium

It’s wild to think that the Dutch went from having the largest footprint in Africa during the 18th century to completely backing out right before the actual Scramble for Africa. Giving up the Gold Coast just to secure their foothold in Southeast Asia is such a plot twist in imperial history.

broadly, most of the colonies in Africa were a net negative and more a prestige activity (and corruption. yes there was wealth, but the colonizing states spent a lot for only some private individuals and companies to make profits (similar to current economic activity in the world)
