How was Indonesia colonized by the Dutch? 2 of my ancestors sailed for the VOC.
1 was a cook, died enroute to Batavia.
The other was a shootist/musketeer. He apparently deserted in Capetown. His dossier in the archive (available online) has a sidenote that says -If you know his whereabouts, please let us know, we are concerned for his state of being! -
Which is Dutch for: -were gonna chop his traitor head off and burn it in oil. -
I hope they didnt catch him, and he lived a peaceful life somewhere.
Its pretty daunting being Dutch and reading about the atrocities and the outright genocide our ancestors commited in these lands. Even for a lot of sailors at the time it was way too much; hiring samurai and sending them into peacefull villagers to slaughter everyone. A lot of the letters home from the sailors speak in terms of: -unchristianlike- and -I thought this venture was about trade? -.
The VOC was an absolutely frightening institution.\r\n

The dutch republic IS NOT a colonizer, the Kingdom of the Netherlands was the colonizer, yes they kill ppl in Banda but they bought Malay mercenaries from java island (bantam) too not just Japan, Bantam Sultan is not dead or canceled, they were held hostage with no free trade and every political or economic interaction with the international should go through VOC, Bali is recognized by the VOC as a foreign client and sovereignty but they are not as creative as Japan that is why the proposal for Protestantism happen because they are not ready for science trade just prostitution, worker, and spice goods, and the king killed by the Netherland, not VOC thus Bali become a part of the republic.
the term colonialism is racist to me as if like it is that simple.

Well the dutch also gave knowledge about architecture for example. I don't know what would have happened if Spain or England were still there Instead of The Netherlands. It's not like Indonesian was fully exploited. It's not good to colonize but let's be fair to say that we traded and didn't kill as many as the Japanese in all those years time. That being said, it's not me talking it right but changing history can't be resolved, neither can the perhaps scenario what if the Dutch didn't colonize Dutch India, mabey the computer wasn't on my desk today for example. New York used to be New Amsterdam as well. And most technology we use today is shared knowledge in some way

You better read more historical book, don't look only from colonial view, must be fair to tell the truth. My suggestion is: 1. Check where is Cornelis de Houtman death and who is kill him. 2. Aceh is the first freedom country send 3(three) Ambassadors to Nederland although Nederland still under Spain's colony. What is mean of that? 3. What is the base reason to say that Dutch occupation Indonesia in 350 years? Read the Aceh history, how long war period between Aceh and Dutch army, how much cost Dutch pay and how many General/high officer dead? You could find the biggest war -Dutch army- grave yard in Banda Aceh.

Omg before now i didnt know white people get so much hate: /
I came here because today a dutch friend told me that both indonesia and nederland would benefit alot if they were still -united-. I told him that i dont know much about it but i dont believe the colony was doing any good to indonesian people then he told me that after nederland left indonesian people killed each other in fights more than 100 k deaths and that indonesia never been a free country even before. Im looking for a book that talk about all this with more details if anyone has some to recommend thx

Despite Britain, Portugal & Spain already present, the Dutch MUST gain a monopoly of the spice trade as a matter of national security-. Another example white people have zero culture, everything they have came from somewhere else. Well- they do whine a lot & can stretch the truth to the point it-s unrecognizable to get their way. They make up laws, rules & boundaries of other people-s land & impose themselves where they were welcomed but never invited. And apparently can never seem to find their way back to their own country.

Mataram was never under dutch. They call it Vorstenlanden for a reason. We give our loyalty only to our kings, king of Yogyakarta and king of Surakarta. No matter what you say, history written by whomever, but me as a living history, still hold dear of our kings. One thing grandpa reminds me of the dutch: during the -politia- 1945-1949 they burn down our house in Vorstenlanden to deter the pro independence people. Another grandpa said grandma account in ABNAMRO was blocked by the dutch after her death.

What Amazes me all these European colonizers made a Feast to our Homes in ASEAN. We no Fools bruh. It's -God, Glory, Golds- is the primary reason. Sensationalized it to -Spices. - Bruh there's No Pepper corn or Garlic in our islands but there are Tons of Golds! Our Ancestors wearing All kinds of Golds from head to foot. THESE FOOLS MADE A FOOL OUT OF THEMSELVES and left our islands POOR. You even sacked the graves of our Ancestors and took the gold heirlooms from their graves!

It was a trade war that demonstrated extraordinary Dutch conquest, organization and tenacity. Even arriving late in these islands on the other side of the world, they defeated the three greatest powers that exploited local trade: Spain, Portugal and Great Britain. They subdued diverse native populations and even after the bankruptcy and dissolution of the VOC in 1799, they continued to dominate the current Indonesia only granting its independence in 1949!

My people was colonized for 400 years, we fought and grew up stronger, and now I, and most other asians, have to suffer the whining and violence of other ex colonized people, because of my white passing due to my mixed origins. Don't be surprised if I side with the ex colonizers, id rather join the Dutch or French and British than you. Why would I want the space I earned now be transformed into South Africa or Syria.

Without Dutch colonization, Indonesia wouldn't even exist. The difference is way too big. The only thing we have in common is being colonized by the Dutch. Malays in Indonesia have much more in common with Malays in Malaysia, Singapore, or Brunei, compared to Javanese, or even Papuans. Neighboring tribes and nations kept fighting each other before Dutch came, like between Javanese and Sundanese, or Ternate and Tidore.

Im crying so hard after watching this. The world was so messed up. I'm glad to live in peace where people can enjoy life, make new discovery and become furries without the concern of colonialism. Even though, we still are worrying on the expected nuclear war. Oh god pls save us

the United Provinces (old Netherlands) back then was modern day the Netherlands and Belgium. If you combine those countries today its the 9th economy of the world. and the modern Netherlands by itself (17 million people) are 14th economy of the world still.
reply

take the positive, the Dutch colonialism united all the kingdoms in Indonesia which they always fought with each other. if the Dutch did not come, maybe Indonesia would never exist, because the Dutch came and developed, Indonesia became united against the Dutch.
reply

old story. my ancestors almost once a week caught the Dutch off guard. burnt them alive. or cut off their heads and sent packages to their forts. the activity became a hobby like hunting wild animals. and the Dutch were the most afraid of our family.
reply

Honestly, studying this time of colonialization really pissed me off, seeing the pictures of how Dutch treated Indonesian that time. Colonialization should never be existed! No nation has the justification nor right to treat a nation unequally!

The Japanese admiral who was the supreme commander of the Japanese Army and Navy forces in Dutch East Indies, signed a decree granting independence to the archipelago, one day after Japan signed its unconditional surrender.

This narration disregards the violence and brutality towards local islanders.
Remind us once again how they got their authority to set anything there and how they maintained it? This video needs fair justification.

As a Brit, it kinda annoyed me that he referred to the Brits as English even though the Union Jack flag was shown instead of the flag of Saint George. The Union Jack is the British flag, not the English flag
reply

Thanks for making this video. But I think it should be mentioned that The Netherlands recognising the independence for a price: that agreement requiring Indonesia taking over the Dutch East India government-s debt.

I just don't understand why my country can be colonized for 350 years, do they live in harmony with the population while colonizing or what, because it's a little strange if it can last that long,

The better question is which area of Indonesia was actually colonized by the Dutch. I think it was only in Java and southern part of Sumatra. Kalimantan? I don-t think so.

My teacher says, Indonesia has been colonized for 300 years but for the first time, the Netherlands was go to Indonesia for sell, For the colonized, what indonesia island?

At its height, the VOC was worth, in today's money, 8 trillion USD. It's the most profitable Company that ever existed, bigger than Standard Oil, Amazon or Apple

Maybe you can put Aceh Oorlog in there, the war cost 15-20 millions gulden each year and i think that is one of the longest war Dutch ever experience
reply
