Should have talked about the Napoleonic Wars and the German mediatisation instead. Napoleon's France took German lands up to the Rhein, and the Imperial crown had to compensate remaining nobles by effectively consolidating the innumerable tiny independent states into the larger blocs we see at the start of the Victorian age. That's when all the bishoprics, small counties and free states that you see in medieval maps disappeared, and is far less talked about than Bismarck's unification.

Funny how Germany was nothing more than small states to be ruled by The Holy Roman Empire in the 15th to the 18th Century to becoming a official country in 1871. Kinda like how America went from being small English colonies to US states and officially becoming the United States of America.
