7 Things You Shouldn't Feel Guilty For

Guilt is defined as a feeling of deserving blame, anger, or shame, often evoked when we consciously hurt others with our words, choices, or actions. Have you ever felt guilty or ashamed about something but didnt understand why? While its certainly important for us to acknowledge when weve done something wrong and apologize for it, we sometimes find ourselves feeling guilty about things that we shouldnt. Excessively feeling guilty and blaming ourselves for everything is an unhealthy attitude to have, and it often leads to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and perfectionism. And if youre not careful, it can worsen into behaviors of overcompensating and overthinking, as well as high levels of stress and chronic emotional distress. So we've made this video to help you identify the things you shouldn't feel guilty for. If you find this video helpful and want to learn more about how to stop being so hard on yourself, we've previously made a video on the signs you may be too hard on yourself

I deserve guilt. I made a worker feel bad about his mistake, and he didn't deserve that. Im a high-ranking chef at a university and I was told by a student employee that her coworker (let's call him Will) had been touching crew members too much. Not _that_ type of touch, just casual ones, like on arms or shoulders. He was always very outgoing at work. Still, I took him to my colleagues office for a chat and told him he shouldn't touch anyone without consent. Just handshakes. I said we needed the workers to be comfortable in a good work environment, that he pretty much shouldn't talk about anything other than work and school. How he shouldn't tell his stories because they may be inappropriate to some degree to the other workers; funny to him only. I think hes about 25, give or take. He seemed pretty quiet and uncomfortable during my speech. Answered a question or two with a nod and headshake. The only question he had for me was if anyone reported his touching; I said, It doesn't matter. Maybe that was a bit rude.
The next day, I heard on the news that Will had been shot in the stomach. The assaiIant said to him, Your time is up. This is for your joke about me and my girlfriend. HeII, this is for _everyone_ who knows you. They'll all be happy once you're gone. You deserve to die, especially slowly and painfully. Luckily the police arrived to arrest the man and take Will to the hospital. He's gonna be okay, thankfully. A long medical process, but he's gonna live. And that's just it. What if he wasn't? What if my last moment with him was going a little too far in the office? Yeah, I was right about how he should be more filtered at work, and that the touching needed to be restricted for his coworkers comfort (and for him to be successful, but I shouldnt have spoken to him the way I did. I shouldnt have said to his boss (who was in the room with us too, Is there anything you want to add? That was so insensitive, now that I think of it. Our worker never meant any discomfort or harm. He only meant to joke around and have fun with his coworkers. I shouldve shown more patience and understanding and only given him a very brief and gentle talk in the hall, not a lecture in the office with his boss present. He didn't deserve that, let alone feel hated and worthy of death as that man indicated. I'm sure Will didn't mean to offend him and his girlfriend, whatever the joke was. And anyway, it's perfectly natural to causally touch or tap people without it being creepy; maybe Will deserved a right like that, within reason and limits so he didn't go over them and discomfort anyone. I'm so glad he's still alive. I appreciate him so much more. I cried like Will did, only outside of his position. When my Will fully recovers--heII, the next time I can visit him in the hospital--I'm gonna tell him I'm sorry for being a jerk to him. That I mishandled the situation and could've done better. He may have made a few mistakes at work, but he deserved better from me.

So. what's happening with me is that, I've got a truly good friend. He's always gone overboard for helping me with a lot of things, and we've been amazingly great friends. But since recent times, things have begun to go downhill. Turns out he always saw me more than just a friend and confessed, ah I never really thought of him more than a friend. I like some other guy and he's been knowing it since the first day of our friendship, and we discussed that guy a lot, just the way you discuss your crush with your friends you know, that way. We've not just been great friends, but also shared I love you's, the friendly ones yk, at least from my side they were always limited till friendship. So when he confessed and rejected, he said something like Please take care from next time while talking to a guy. We had long arguments and after a month, I was so exhausted that I thought of just letting it all go. I want to stay happy and so I just don't wish to confront him again. He said at the end that You never really cared for me. I know you don't care for me. which is obviously, not true. He's helped me in the best ways, but I was also the only one who'd stood for him when no one trusted him. I'm not sure if it's wrong that I now don't wish to confront him, or if it's right that I'm just wishing to live my life.

Im just gonna dump this here in case someone finds it and can help lol
I have friends, cousins, or just know people in general, that have it way worse than me. Physically and mentally and verbally abused, homeless, suicidal. While they are going through those things, I feel like I want to have it worse so I can validate my feelings. Like I was never abused as a kid, but I do go through my own mental self sabotage, and I feel like if Im not on the same level as being abused, then I have no right to feel the things I do. Its almost like I need an excuse to feel things. If Im feeling sad then I need an excuse to it, and if its not a good enough excuse, then I have no right to feel this way. And I end up beating myself up about it yk. The point is I feel like I cant have a good life because if I have a good life then I wont have any problems, and if I do have problems I need a reason. And I want my reasoning to feel just as valid as it would if someone with a more server problem was saying it

What about when you feel an immense guilt for having something that your family members could have had if their circumstances were different? It feels like were all given a role in a family and sometimes other family members have to sacrifice so much with things that you dont even have to worry about. You can also see how it takes a toll on them and it makes you feel guilty because why do the people you love have to struggle when you dont (for certain things. Then you start to feel guilty for being happy and confident, almost like youre rubbing it in their face for not being able to have that. My heart is so heavy for them all the time and I feel like I constantly have to tone my achievements down around them so I dont make them feel bad.

Ive recently been told by a very close friends mother that I have wronged them and am no longer welcome around due to my Phone and Car both being broken at the moment and im unable to send them back money (using said phone) they had paid me to fix their brakes (which ive not been able to do since i have no transportation myself. I feel like shit. Am i beating myself up? Im doing everything within my ability to get both problems resolved but still, what's happening in my life for the situation to be the way it is has been out of my control and i feel guilty about it. Am i a bad person because of this? is there anything i can do about it outside of what im already doing? Its eating me alive honestly and i just don't know what to do

i felt guilty for critisizing someone on an art platform, i didn't really mean it to be hurtful, the art is beautifull but to me it's still lacking in emotion and the pose is so stiff and so i said that, let's just say that guy didn't take it too well. and now im just staring at the mirror and my own art, thinking, in terms of coloring im not really that great compare to that person, am i even worthy to said that things, i mean i just hurt someone feelings, if only i didn't said that, that person would probably be fine and continues that day in a good mood. the guilt is really burning me and i have no place to confess as of right now other than here. is this what it feels to be a human or just a plain bad person

I feel guilty for more and more things which i believe i should be feeling guilty. i used to steal clothes from my cousins closet. i was rebel to my grandmother with whom i spent my teenage years in our home. i felt envy and jealous to my friends' successes. even once i stole one of my friends' notes the day before exam. i know all these are unforgivable and unreasonable. but i cant help my nasty teenage self now. now im in my twenties and this is the first time i am sharing these to someone other than myself. i dont know why iam doing this now. so im here. having consumed by tons of guilt as an everyday dose. i know there would be only hatred for me. no matter. i deserve it. but as of now i feel some relief

Today i was watching a psychological thriller movie, GLASS. Its been years since my last epileptic episode. im handling myself really well, being in a toxic family n situation. Bt today i heard tht my father said my rebel behavior and talking for me against thm is a result of these movies. My mum said thy have to tc of me take to hospital and thn after tht 10 days thy have to tc of my bitter behavior and rudeness because of the episode again. So for the sake of thm i shudnt watch anything like tht sleep at 8, leave the devices and basically move the way they want, so tht i remain healthy, no episodes no tc problem and no rebel attitude. Bt the toxic and mental stress situation in home won't change ever.

I feel guilty for what happened in Afghanistan last year. I had volunteered to be on one of the deployments to the area around that time, but I never really got my foot in the door due to having just returned from a different deployment.
I know cognitively that there was nothing I could do to stop the deaths of those that wore the same uniform that I do. My presence there wouldnt have changed anything, as did my absence. I dont know why Ive put this guilt on myself, but I cant shake the thought that I would and should have taken the place of even one of them. I think about this every day, and I dont know if Ill ever stop.

I feel guilty for being happy. When all my friends are saying they're depressed, and the entire internet is talking about how sad or depressed they are, and how awful their lives are, I just feel like I should have an awful life too. I've never been harrased, my parents accept me and my passions and help me persue them and grow, I'm a good student, I have a small group of friends, an awesome bf, and i'm just generally content with my life. And I don't relate to any of the gifted kid burnout stuff, even though i feel like i should. I just fell like my life should be worse.

I feel horrible for getting after my nephews. They do things that get under my skin, but they're still kids. My nephew Wallace stomped towards the bathroom to brush his teeth, not the first time after being scolded for fighting with his cousin, and I got angry and yelled at him. Scared him. I felt horrible when I saw his eyes and immediately just had to apologize. A sensitive kid, still learning, but I shouldn't have screamed at him.
He has another uncle but due to a fight we got into, he isn't in the picture. Almost afraid I'm becoming my brother; angry and bitter.

I feel extreme guilt when talking to my friends. I feel like I force friendship on them. I dont understand why someone would want to be friends with me. I feel like my personality is terrible and cant even look at myself in the mirror. I feel guilty when I talk to my friends about a problem with my mental health. I dont want my friends to think Im someone who makes things up for attention. I feel bad for my friends with I talk to them. When I wake up and look in the mirror I cant take it and feel bad that my friends have to look at me all day and deal with me.

My friend is mad at me for changing a class we had together, and now their stuck doing a class they hate by themselves alone. I accidentally changed to a class that was full without knowing. I understand why they are mad at me, and I really didn't mean too. They are my only friend and I feel ashamed for what I did. They started distancing themself from me because I changed classes. I tried to change back to their class but I won't be able too. I feel very guilty about it whenever they bring up my mistake. But I've tried everything

I feel guilty whenever my parents give me something and on my birthday and Christmas because I know it costs so much money and I feel guilty for having so much when other people dont have enough and I feel guilty for how other people are constantly doing things for me but I just dont know how to do things for them because I find saying anything personal really hard, giving compliments on things that are more than just I like your hair. I feel bad for being upset that my hamster died. I feel like I have it better than others, like people lose important people. Humans. Meanwhile, I loved him and never got to say goodbye. its been 3 months and I still miss him, I told my therapist about it the day after I found out he passed away. It didnt help at all. I loved him, he was too young. But Im crying and feeling guilty for not giving him the life he deserves.

the removing yourself from toxic relations is so confusing to me. Because this envokes a whole new fear in me to talk to others about my problems. I don't know how much I should say now, if I even should say anything to my friends. How much is too much? Especially when you are in a difficult situation, shouldn't you be able to talk to your friend? Can someone please explain the difference?

Thank you so much!
Story: so today at PE we were all in groups. And my whole group was gossiping about me because I could not run. So my group was being mean to me and punching me. So I told my BFF i hated my group and I guess that this girl in my group was behind me. And now they talked to the principal and teacher. Im really scared for tomorrow.

Conditioned by abuse, blown to pieces for making a mistake, shamed pay a heavy price, just for asking for help, being joyful, being genuine. Brings on the nasty insidiousness, undermining. You can be aware, know how wrong it is, don't go along, don't give them the power, it still impacts the brain and impairs the moment and the future.

How about feeling guilty about talking to someone at a bar for a hour. Then they leave and your told you made her uncomfortable. Why did she talk to me for a hour? Why did she laugh at my jokes? Should I feel guilty. I'm trying to be a better person? It sucks when you think you are on your best behavior and you get the same rotten results.

I feel like I always have to be happy but it's more like a fake mask happy when deep down I feel blank and not there, then when I actually wanna do something that makes me happy and relaxed like throwing on some soft socks and listening to my record player or watching a movie even if I'm alone I feel ashamed for it, anyone relate?
