Ik this video is old but I still wanna get this out
I lost someone really important in 2020, he was a great man and an like a father to not just me but most of my family. Sadly we had to move not long after which is where it started. Obviously everybody was still grieving so I thought the numb feeling was normal but it never really went away. It started to be a regular thing at first it freaked me out to the point where it would keep me up at night. Just hours of being left with my thoughts it felt like a prison and made me think I was gonna go crazy. When 2021 hit I thought I was getting better, I could go out to stores but I wasnt all there. At the time my therapist said it was a good thing because I could focus and stay calm in public but I started to overdo it everywhere I went. When I am in auto pilot I follow the person I trust most around, I dont walk next to them I stay behind so when it was my birthday I couldnt function. my sister took me to the mall and said we could go anywhere and get anything I wanted but this only made me anxious and want to cry. She told me to walk upfront and pick a shop but I couldnt focus at all I still ended up following everyone around then towards the end of it felt horrible and apologize to her because I felt like I ruined my birthday for her. She wasnt mad at me at all just wanted me to have fun so I guess it was all just in my head. I spend most days like that now, in my head not saying or having any real thoughts just a constant repeat of the same thing like a broken radio. Its gotten so bad to the point my whole family notices it even my 8 year old brother. he came to me and asked Hey why dont you smile anymore? You used to smile and laugh all the time I dont remember the last time I saw you smile. . That made me want to cry but when I tried to nothing came out, it feels like such a long time since I last cried but even when I did it was only a few tears then back to feeling empty. I know it bad but I feel like feeling numb is a good thing for me if I lose anyone else maybe it wont hurt as bad maybe I can block it out almost like it never happened. but I know thats not good for anyone to do its best I see a therapist but no matter who I talk to I never feel that spark I once had I probably wont get that back but l like to think I still have it.
I recommend to find a good therapist to anyone who has feeling of numbness please dont say well its not that bad! that maybe the case now but it could change later. Even those who have had it for a while please dont just give up, its better to try and get it now then to let it build up for years letting it take over your life. Anyways if you got this far sorry if this was boring or had bad grammar but thanks for reading and stay safe out there

I'm 3rd grade in middle school. It's July now but, back in April like 2 weeks into my 3rd school year I had an outburst. For like a second because I was at school. I'm usually devoid of reaction or feeling at school, because i don't feel the need to feel anything since I don't have anyone to show how I feel towards in school.
And on that particular Day I felt like I was going to explode. And I know that personally, people talking to me when I'm on that edge will just make it worse, so I stayed completely silent and started away from interacting with people. I thought I would make it through the school day, but I ended up dropping my pencil case between the wall and my desk. So I got like a moment of uncontrollable rage and stood up and slammed my chair into my desk. Which I admit was a rude thing to do, when people are around. But at the moment I really just could not think calmly because I was just so mad at everything in my life, Over a pencil case. yeah, I know.
And my teacher got mad at me and called me over to the hallway to give me a lecture.
But I feel like it was more personal. Because he got so damn pissed over me getting mad for a second even though I didn't yell at anyone. and the only person's reputation that would be harmed by me doing that is me. I got upset because I didn't think it was fair. I know I have my problems, and I live by not making my problems other people's problems. And I had been trying so hard up until that point to keep it to myself. And ONE second of letting it out lands me in trouble? teachers don't know what I go through everyday to keep my mind off the past, and I how I'm putting my all into being practically non-existent to try and not bother people. While he was getting mad at me I felt so cornered and like I was gonna cry. I went back to my seat and cried the whole hour through, no one even dared to look at me. I still think about how lucky I was to sit next to a wall. It was so much easier and I'm glad to have kept the little bit of face I had left. I can't tell when it'll be enough for them to let me feel how I feel. I don't care if people tell me I'm emo, or pretending, or faking my troubles. I just want to pretend I'm okay, and that it'll be okay. If I ignore it long enough the discomforts of life will go away.
I hope Japan someday finds that Having problems don't make You the problem.
I hate living here and sometimes I wish I would've just been aborted. Maybe then I would've been less of an eyesore to people around me.
So very sorry about my venting, I just wanted to get it out. I didn't feel like texting my dad for the millionth time about how I feel in the middle of work, when he has his problems too.

Recently, I feel like I'm not myself anymore. I don't know who I am. I can't seem to find myself, not matter how much I try. It's as if my personality and hobbies are artificially fabricated by someone who is not actually me. Whenever someone says a joke or something, or does something funny, I start laughing hysterically, but it's only a few seconds before I realize that I'm forcing it. I don't really find it that funny. I don't feel happy. I don't feel anything. I don't feel as happy as others seem; I don't feel as excited. My anxiety is even a bit better because I can't even feel fear anymore. The only strong emotion I feel, as suggested in the video, is anger and irritation. I get so annoyed and irritated by some people without a reason that I just want to punch them and yell at them. Sadness is also a strong emotion. I often look at other people having a great time with their friends, seeming happy, and then I just get so sad and angry at myself that I'm so toxic and shy that I can't even have a friendship like that with my friends. I feel as if my friends don't even know who I am. I feel like I'm lying to them. I never feel like myself anymore. I'm worried that, if the real me comes out one day, they won't like how I lied to them about everything, my fabricated life and personality, and they'll leave. It's not all that bad, since I'm sure they deserve better friends, but it hurts. It hurts not knowing who you even are.

Ive had small bursts of numbness stemming from a young age, and it honest to god scared me so much that when I went into my teenage years, it had already grown into full blown anxiety.
I guess in my own way, I began to read novels and stories with heavy amounts of angst, and also fluff, and so far, I have not felt so many bursts of numbness that I did throughout my young age.
I suppose getting through novels, which Ive been reading since I was young btw, heavy or fluffy, has been my coping method with it.
Edit: oh crap, I made this before watching the video and got to the you only feel stuff through movies or media Damn, really got me.
Tbh, Im in a much happier place now, and if you ask my friends, they can tell you that Im high strung and optimistic which doesnt sound very numb, right? Well, I immerse myself in several different things, games, novels, etc. Fiction basically. But Ive found that if I didnt have such an interest or if I had never discovered my interest, I wouldve been completely emotionless. Unfortunately, to other people, it just sounds like I base my entire personality on what Im into at that time. which is completely true now that I think about and write this down. Why is that so true it almost makes me want to cry.

Personally I've been feeling like my emotions have turned off because of my job. I always have to deal with inconsiderate coworkers or people who I can't relate to and it makes me feel so horrible when I'm there. Like, two days ago for example, a coworker told me they don't mind if I go fast today because they want to go home, so I didn't get the chance to slow down at all because they'd complain when I went slow. Eventually it got to a point where I was exhausted and went to get a drink, and thankfully I was on break, but later on I was put in a really heavy truck. I felt like I was gonna get in trouble and possibly lose my job due to a certain person I didn't want to show up, but, I didn't get in trouble, but I had to work my entire butt off that day, and ever since then I felt like I'm not able to feel anything, not a thing, and its not like I don't want to feel anything, its more so that I'm too afraid to feel something cuz if I do, then I'm going to mess up or do something I'll regret. So, am I feeling emotionally numb? I guess so yeah, but if I'm wrong, you guys can interpret for yourselves how I feel, sorry for anyone I offended here, I'm just not feeling like myself.

I have felt depression & worthlessness most of my life, people I have broached the subject with either didn't understand or told me to seek help, any help & told me to look at my life, other people have it much worse than me, why should I be depressed, so I just stopped talking about it. I finally saw a clinical psycologist who I thought might finally figure out what was wrong with me, but I just got this list of confusing multi choice questions within questions to answer that he read of a list, you know like in the last 2 weeks have you had suicidal thoughts & then on a list from 1 to 5, 1 being almost never, to 5, always, where would you put yourself etc. I didn't understand most of them as by the time he got to the end of the question I wasn't sure what I was answering, it was not like in the movies. My cats are much more help & I've been told that the frequency of a cats purr has healing properties, cat people have known this for thousands of years, so I rescued another cat, now I can't off myself, who would look after my cats.

Did anybody felt numb for a very long time, for more than a couple of years?
I've actually had a surprise birthday party almost 4 years ago, and I've reacted exactly how the video depicted. I felt touched inside, but had a hard time showing it then.
During the past few weeks I had to quit my first job due to burnout, started to have spinal pains that sometimes paralyzes one or both of my legs when I walk, and I've broken up with my girlfriend who I've been with for a great 1 1/2 years. I haven't cried since then, and have been finding out how to leave this auto-pilot state during the time.
I can now sense my feelings, but somehow they feel distant, as if something's blocking them from me. The only medicine I took from time to time was some Xanax when I felt anxiety attacks rising, but wonder if anybody else has been feeling this numb for a long time.

This is currently happening to me. It was my birthday on June 29 and i was given a card and a gift. I didnt know how to respond because i didnt know if i was happy or not. I was acting as if i WAS happy and didnt really feel it myself. Even now as im typing this out i feel a sort of numbness. I feel like i want to express my emotions and cry right now but i just cant. Pressure is the only this that can make me cry and that doesnt feel good. I want to be able to cry when i want to and when i feel like i will. But i cant. I wonder if im actually being sad or if im jusy being dramatic. I wonder if im really happy or deserve what i have. I run away from problems and insert myself into fiction. Reading all day, everyday. Right now as i type this out i feel like i want to vomit and sob. But i cant.

Empty 90% myself 2% uncontrollable happiness 8% because I don't know what to do with myself. at the time people are talking about ME. Wanting to kill myself if say 35% of the time. I've held the gun to my head just to think about what my family and friends would think, I'm okay that I haven't because my friend going to prison would be okay talking without me, my friends girlfriend is pregnant, and I In general have only overwhelming guilt about killing myself and leaving my acquaintances and family behind not to mention My experience with friends that they wish not to talk about which I understand because I don't wanna talk about it either because I was drunk on pre pubeeseance I really wish to kill myself, I've always thought that I'd want to die of old age but lately I can't help but want to die

I definitely believe I experience emotional numbness. Prior the the age of 15, I used to cry and seek people. After the sge of 15, I just started feeling very numb and like I was suppressing feelings for no reason. I stopped crying, unless I was extremely overwhelmed or angry, and I would only cry if I was alone and in my room. Even then, I'd only cry for like 2 minutes. I stopped enjoying happy events, and felt like I had to pretend to enjoy my birthday surprises by force. I don't enjoy parties, celebrations, or events. I feel uncomfortable having to comfort someone, and I lowkey hate when people vent to me. I hate being asked how I am, too. Idk. It's so strange, and it's something I am working through.

I do feel this but its ig smaller? Like i relate but its not i like i feel nothing but i just havent had any big emotions. I bought myself a pair of shorts im happy abt that, my phone dosent really work and i dont like it but if im just sitting in my chair and thinking i feel numb. If i listen to a video or music or i am reading a book im feeling good and if my game wont save i get angry but those feelings are little and they go away quicly. I just think thats annoying. Im a bit exited for school bc then i have something else to focus on than just myself.

After a breakup and losing my job back in June of this year, Ive been more numb in a way of I dont know what to feel in a situation.
Let alone my birthday is coming up but Im more stressed of it than if it was someone elses birthday
Ive had been taking Zoloft since November 2022 and stopped taking after the two events because I felt like it wasnt feeling anything. My relationship started at the beginning of the year and only lasted 6 months and Im still trying to accept it.

I have all of it lol besides blunting bc I dont take pills bc I already know its bad but last one was funny bc in some people life out there theres no such thing as friends, family or feelings just me myself and I and even if someone did tried to help it will probably be temporary so overall you gonna be alone 24/7 just keeping it real. Love the video tho least I see and know what Im feeling and its confirmed makes me feel like Im not losing my mind and have at least something to relate to

I was diagnosed with severe depression last 2016 and been thinking that I have become better but now I just feel empty inside. I no longer cry as much as before and no longer thinking about suic/de. Its just emptiness. What do I do? I feel like Ive ben like this for a long time. I dont remember since when. I dont like talking to a doctor/therapist because I dont think I will be able to fully say what I feel without hesitations. Theres a part of me that thinks that I cannot trust them.

I watch this video before and I realized that I was numb after watching the video I looked for a purpose I found one (I started liking someone) they liked me back then I felt happy. yesterday he told me my feelings for you have gone I cried but after I did that I started feeling. numb as if I was back to step one finding a purpose I feel like I'm in a loop of feeling numb finding a purpose and my purpose gets taken away from me and then I feel numb.

Ive felt like this, off and on during different time periods, for a very long time. That bit about pretending? And about emotions while reading/etc? WAY too accurate.
As an aside, I'm pretty sure my problems are tied to the bone-deep loneliness I experienced as a kid. Please, teach kids to talk to the kid in the corner. Be friendly and kind. It makes so much a difference. (And don't overly isolate your kids either)

Just Suffered(suffering) from depression and this Emotional Numbness and I really want to Thank You to let people like us know that we are not alone suffering from some uncommon mental illness and that someone(you) is also exactly understanding and explaining that harsh mental illness which is no less than a torture. You really described this Numbness as how i used to feel(and still feeling sometimes)

Seven signs you're feeling numb:
1. You're tired of being what they want you to be.
2. Feeling so faithfulness
3. Lost under the surface
4. You don't know what they're expecting of you
5. You're put under the pressure of walking in their shoes
6. Caught in the undertow (just caught in the undertow)
7. Every step you take is another mistake to them

I always thought that I was numb
Because I always feel like I'm missing something I can't put my finger on
When something bad happens I don't react
When people try make me happy I try and act as if I am
Idk man it's strange
Cuz the thing I seldom feel is anger
I don't usually hate anyone but when I hate someone you can feel it in the air around me

A few months ago we were in class but everyone was talking and didnt let the teacher say a word. Normally i wouldnt have done that but, I dont know why but i exploded and slammed my book on the table and the whole class went silent and didnt say a word in the rest of the hour. I dont know if this relates to this somehow but i thought i would be funny to tell so.

Do you all ever feel like you're on the verge to cry, tears are ready to be poured, your heart ready to feel like a total mess, but it just doesn't come out. Even if you didn't care if you cry, you never do. Like you got a stab to a limb, and you didn't even try to stop the stab from bleeding, but it never bleeds.

I live like this for years now. My friends and younger siblings seem to get on with their life, yet I'm stuck in a loop between school and sleep. I'm kinda known from my short temper. I tried to do something with it because I usually don't want to snap. But I do anyway. So I think I know now what to work on now.
reply

when i'm with other people i always try to act based on their emotions like it something nice happened i see everyone is happy so i also act happy but i actually don't feel anything. like i love ppl but whenever i interact with them i act based on their mood, it's not natural
