Well, Im afraid this is of little help to me. I have next to nothing in common with most folks, I dont watch shows, I read. And few care what The Memoirs of Hadrian is about. I dont watch news, its unhealthy, not to mention distressing. I dont care to discuss politics which is currently the hot topic. I ask harmless or noninvasive questions because I dont want to pry. If someone wants to tell me something personal its entirely up to them. I have very quirky interests that others would, Im quite sure, find terribly uninteresting, or simply find odd. Which leaves the weather, I guess. So, I avoid these situations as best I can and confine the majority of interactions to a few select, and understanding friends. Good luck to you all and Im sure this is helpful to some. I do enjoy this site, fairly informative!

Introvert, I tie dye my pants and make a lot of my shirts so it helps when someone compliments me on what I am wearing like Mt pants so I tell them thanks I made them myself. Then they usually say like how did you make or what did you use or something that takes us into a deep conversation. I guess the point that I am making is that if you use personal things to express yourself, that might help keep the conversation going or start a conversation for small talk if someone compliments you (first or after you compliment) them. You could even bring your fave book or comic with you to carry for something they might notice and start talking to you about with. Artists might want to carry a few pend or a paint brush in their hair, maybe some sheet music or whatever you are really passionate about

What is small talk really? Is it boring talk about routine topics based around the shared zeitgeist, exp: sports, wealthier, or news.
Or does it have to do with slowly learning about the person, so a deeper conversation can develop down the line?
Often times I feel that people who talk about small talk in such a negative light, are simply not willing to take a interest in the person they are speaking to.
Everyone cares about something, and if you can get them to connect with you on it, you get to see what makes it so great, then you get to take that with you to always brighten up your life.

We are only under the amount of pressure we put on ourselves. I once watched two people challenge each other in completing a task. One person became nervous, started shaking, and dropping things, then lost the challenge. The other person's friend laughed, and said, He couldn't handle the pressure. The other guy looked at his friend, pointed at the guy who lost, and said, I'm under just as much pressure as he is.

I'm sorry, but the video game sound effects were annoying in this one. Maybe it was the specific high pitched sounds? Maybe there were too many and it got in the way of the actual advice?
For the record, I was listening to this while driving home, so this was basically a radio show for me.
It does make sense to compare conversations to a dating Sim video game, it can be done. Adjustments to make.

I'm almost 55 and still dread it. All I can say is, practice makes perfect, like anything else. Depending on the situation, small talk is just a way to pass time, but it's also a way to get to know people. I've just learned to ask questions- many people love to talk about themselves. The ones who ask YOU questions- those are fewer and those are the ones you want to get to know better. :v)

for me, i get really awkward and self-conscious when answering questions or commenting on something and sometimes i don't know where or how long to look into their eyes. if i should smile or look serious etc. also the tone of my voice i get v self conscious about. i'd appreciate if someone can help me: )

whenever I feel awkward I say
sorry my mom is calling me
or if it's real conversation
I have to go to the bathroom and spend a long time until they go or forget about me
I hate it when I lie to someone but i get really stressed in this situations, does anyone do this too?

Um hi I am 10 years old and I try to avoid small talks with my dad because it makes me feel uncomfortable and he manly talks about personal stuff.
How can I try to avoid it I don't like when he does it can you help me and feel relax and calm to avoid it please. Can you please

At this point, I find the best strategy I've found is to just tell whoever I'm talking to that I'm an Introvert and if I'm quiet and awkward it's just my nature and I try to be normal but sometimes I just suck at it.
99% of people understand and are very nice about it.

or simply just dont have smalltalk: D if someone wants smalltalk with me i inform them, that i really dont like smalltalk - sure we can talk about stuff like whats going on in the last time but for god sake not about the weather or something like that xD
reply

Ive always felt that being an introvert doesnt mean social stuff hard. Its just that we have a much more limited capacity for the amount of social interactions we can have at once before retreating to our alone place.

What do you do, when you want/have to commence in Small Talk more often with the same person?
Like, with your colleagues or flat mates?
I can't ask them the same questions every single time, can I?
I need help

Me: hi.
Stranger in elevator: hello.
Me: hows your day?
Stranger: good.
. 5 seconds later
Me: i wanna die
Stranger: is there a way to drag my soul out of my body

reply

I guess, i just get really nervous when someone other than my family start talking or asking questions to me, and when i dont know what to answer. I'm just. Silence.

Came for some tips, but I ended up missing at least half of them due to being distracted by videogame-themed animated segments. No regrets though, still liked it.

I can kinda do these things my problem is when I try to get involved in a conversation thats already going about stuff I don't really know/care about
reply

From my experience, small talk is usually a combination of attempts to manipulate and/or assert dominance; i don't really want to be good in such things.
reply

I do my best to avoid social events and if I went to one I will do my best to not talk and just listen and I have been lucky since I seem to be invisible.

I sense she had been playing Mario and various other video games while writing this video, or before recording this video which is awesome, lol
reply

Most of the people who ask you something, actually want you to ask them the same question so they can tell you something about them.

Who made the animation!
Give that genius a trophy! It's soooooo enjoyable and well-done: it brings such sweet old vibes!
