What is gaslighting? When an abuser manipulates you into thinking that you are delusional, be careful. Gaslighting is a common form of emotional manipulation tactic that narcissists use to get you to question your own judgement and perception. Gaslighting often happens in toxic romantic relationships, but can happen from friends and families as well. If you feel that you might be a victim of gaslighting abuse, we recommend the following

My parents gaslighted me for YEARS LONG. They used my ADHD to treat me like trash. When I voice out what exactly theyre doing to me, theyll automatically say to me Youre just crazy theres something wrong with you, men. You need a psychiatrist, you are like this, you are like that look at that face points at me stop with that face and follow what youre told to do! They give me long earful lectures when they hear me talk to other people about them but I hear them talk to their friends, particularly my mothers friends and Im told not to voice out to them the fact about me hearing them talk to other people about me because if I do, they will just tell me what the hell are you talking about? And particularly the Dont eavesdrop or butt in when older people talk. They always make the smartest ways to gaslight me whenever I hear them talk bad about me with other people, whenever I see them make fun of me with my younger sister and/or with my mothers siblings and relatives, whenever I remind them of what they told me years ago which tied my hands and feet and stole years of my life from me just to grant their expectations (e. g. stay here, help here in the house. Dont do this, dont do that. After a few years, they complain about me being a grown up still living under their roof when they are also the ones who dont want me living on my own. They dont want me to grow on my own, whenever I voice out the fact that my mother (and sometimes, my gay uncle) scold me in public, then when I seem not to voice those things out, they continue doing their thing, they continue humiliating me then my mother or my father point at my mouth not to make face when someone tell me do to stuff. That tell me to do stuff is literally to follow what they tell me to do like dont make any reaction when someone makes fun of me cuz it internally satisfy them when someone humiliates me and/or the like. I am not allowed to show emotions because If I do, they will give me long earful lectures, then they will look for mental institutions to have me thrown to those cuz I showed that I hate what everybody around me is doing to me.

Just realized my ex friend was gaslighting the sh1t out of me after 2 years of a healthy friendship, but I was so lonely, mentally unhealthy, and attached to her due to past times, believing that it doesnt matter and that she still cares about me.
She would message me on roblox [which she introduced me to] telling me how bad of a friend I was and that she never wanted to talk to me again, only to reply a few minutes later saying that her sister or a rude friend of hers that didnt like me wrote that. Even though deep down I knew it wasnt true, I blocked the thought of it. Eventually I snapped and told her about how much she was hurting me and that I didnt want to be her friend anymore. She reapplied by telling me that without her I was lost and I would never find a friend like her, guilting me into apologizing.
Eventually we lost contact, as she had moved away, but a few months back she came back to where I lived for a small trip and asked if I wanted to hang out. I made the mistake of going, and she was even worse than before.
On the car ride to the bookstore we where going to, I tried to talk to her but when I did she looked at me like I was some kind of pest, crossed her arms, and looked out of the window away from me. When her mom saw she just said that sometimes my friend would get cranky and not want to talk.
For the rest of the day stuff like this kept going on, and when they dropped me of home I promised myself I wouldnt talk to her again, but sometimes, in that back of my mind theres a voice in the back of my head telling me I should talk to her again and that she was still my best friend. =

i have a coworker who I used to get along with. Idk if i would've considered us friends, we never hung out outside of work, but we snapped each other a lot (her more than me. But a couple months ago, I mentioned how she takes a lot of time off (for legitimate reasons! I wasn't trying to invalidate them) and she got SUPER mad. She suddenly said I act like I'm above everyone else when I don't. I'm a supervisor, and I hardly ever use the power I have. I do think I am one of the better workers there, but it's because the other employees don't really work unless they have to. It's hard to explain, but I know for a fact I didn't think I was better than everyone.
Anyway, our relationship was kind of tense since then, but we still got along somewhat. Until a few days ago. She kept saying I was giving attitude and how disrespectful I was when I did nothing. She said I was fake.
Last night, I was hyperventilating because I worked with her today. I kept thinking am I fake? are the emotions I'm feeling fake? Are they for attention? and I also had a bad headache which I also thought am i acting like I'm in pain? Am I even in pain? when I very obviously was. I can't tell if she's intentionally gaslit me or if it was unintentional, but I have questioned what I've been feeling lately a lot. I've talked to people about it and there are a lot of people there for me, but I still wonder if what I'm feeling is real or if it's just me being fake.
Either way, these videos have helped a lot; thank you, Psych2Go: )

3: 37 The smartest person can fall prey.
This is a true statement, a truth that can be taken literally farther than you may initially think. I have a high level of intelligence Ive inherited from my family, given multiple of my family members are part of high iq societies. Ive been a victim of gaslighting at the hands of my parents my entire childhood. Im 19, and Ive only recently recognized that truth with the help of moving away from them. Im grateful I can recognize patterns of toxicity now including gaslighting. But dont dismiss this point, this is arguably the most important one. You may think Oh theyre legitimately intelligent, they must not have any problems because theyre either too smart to have them or if they do have them, they can resolve it fairly easily. No. I understand the reasoning behind this way of thinking, however you should also take note that high intelligence can also lead to doubt coupled with overthinking because of the ability to see more possibilities and outcomes than the general population, leading to overwhelm mostly due to the fact that BECAUSE most others cant see them, the intelligent person who is a victim to gaslighting will find that they have no one to turn to to reassure and comfort them, OR give insight and deny that any negative possibility is false.

I had a housemate who gaslighted me. He would lie to me, deceive me, try to get a reaction out of me, and blame me for everything - even when it was he fault. He wouldn't clean up after himself. His ego was so big, that I'm surprised his head fit through the door. When he started taking my stuff, and telling me that I must've misplaced it, I felt like my grip on reality was slipping. I moved out of a house that I liked in a location I liked to get away from him. In the following weeks I technically became homeless and I stayed with an aquaintance of my uncle. Even then, I still refused to move back to that house. I even had to go through a tribunal to get my name off the lease, as there's no protections for domestic violence among housemates. He then couldn't afford the rent, and ran out on his lease. Unfortunately my bond money (security deposit) was still attached to that house, and I lost 2/3 of it. :(

When I was in highschool, I got one guy who was gaslighting one of my close friend. At first I had my doubts when I noticed a change in my friends behaviour, later when I asked her about what was going with her, she then told me all about that happened between her and that guy ( one of this old classmate. As soon as I understood the situation, I told her that she's been gaslighted by that guy. I advised her not get any more involved with that guy than she is already did.
After few weeks when I met with her again she was doing fine and also started acting normal than ever.
This points mentioned in this video are very well matched and really something to look out for.

My ex would always tell me I'm never honest with them, when in fact they were never honest with me. It pissed me off so much, and I told them I'm more honest than you, and you know that but they just ignored it, and telling me that I'm lying. They even called me a narcissist because I only care about myself when all I was doing was doing was looking out for myself. Never let someone else try to make you doubt what you KNOW is the truth. Stand up for yourself!

i think it might be worth pointing out that gaslighters may not be a clear conscious role. they might be trapped in their own lies moments at a time, instinctively/unconsciously exploiting/observing little thing that helps isolate people toward their cause. i feel bad for this friend of mine trapped behind his wife's iron claw. even their new neighbor who barely heard them through the walls was like. she's kindda controlling huh?
reply

Even If i have searched so much about gaslighting and my gut is telling me that yas they are manipulating you I just can't decide for sure (maybe it's because of the confusion I really dk) they keep hurting me with their lies and mean comments as jokes but the next moment they are talking about how I'm the most important person in their life and how they will end themselves if I ever leave them I'm just so sick of all this

With this and various other behaviors, I'm often wondering about people who do these things and genuinely don't realize they're doing it. I feel like I've been in a few situations that may have been gaslighting, but I'm not sure how aware the person was about their manipulations and twisted perspectives. Both people came from very different, but very toxic upbringings with residual learned behaviors.

hi psych2go! i was wondering if you could possibly do a video on how to help with this whole climate change thing and to raise awareness to people? because it's actually so so serious and worrying and it has really taken a toll on my mental health and i bet others too, just knowing i have a safe environment during these hard times would really help me and many many others, thank you!

is it possible that my parents are gaslighting me without knowing it? they do these things to me all the time and it greatly affects me but whenever i call them out they completely deny it and say that their horrible parents or say that me accusing them makes them feel bad i feel like im just convincing myself that theyre bad parents and idk what to do about it

I was gaslit by my best friend for two years without realizing it. He constantly lied, attacked me, wore down my self esteem, and planted doubts about my other friends in my mind (about what they were saying/thought about me. He made me think I was insane, and that he was the only one I could trust. Really hurt my GPA and social life waking up from it too.

The person who gaslighted me got angry with me for defending myself from her and I just felt like she was the bigger person, and that I could never win against her, she always made me feel that way and I hated how much one person impacted me
