Depression is exhausting, what you need is support- but instead it feels like when it comes to your parents, everything they do makes things feel even worse. Many teens have been isolated in their homes with their parents due to the nature of the past two years, and for many, it has only worked to fuel their depression and make them more susceptible to it. Many parents have trouble understanding the overall concept of depression, so when they are directly confronted with it, they might only make it worse. So, that being said, here are some things that parents do that fuel teenage depression. Let's stop the stigma now. Watch our video on the signs you're depressed, not lazy

Would you like some advice?
If you are not a teeneger anymore, you need to improve and have a very very healthy and good mindset in your current age, because we can't change the past, but we can change the future. So I wish a lot of soul power and love and happiness, take care.
If your young and live with your parents, first you have to realize if your parents are do that to you, plus keep in mind they do that because they are hearbroken children too, and heartbroken children become heartbroken parents. who know nothing about feelings
The only thing you can do to have clean mind, mindset, and know if you don't wanna ruin your life, you have to improve yourself mentally and phicically and be ready to leave your parent as soon as possible for example college maybe and university but don't ruin you life to not go to school and not doing what you love and end up in a cheap job, if you are younger well learn and train yourself, and know everything your parents say they say that because they broken, they can be dangerous, you can't change them, the only one can change your parents are your parents. if they don't realize their bad behave they ruin you, the only way to survive is be strong, improve, learn, and when you ready and build up a safe place in secret, just leave them.
But this doesn't mean you have to break the connection with them, you can maybe improve them as well from a safe distance, but first you need to heal yourself first. We can't help on others if we didn't heal ourself in the first place?
And the last, if you can't leave in any chance, you have to learn and improve and ask for help.

I'm not teenager anymore but for me, it's the fact that my parent doesn't trust me.
They doesn't seem to believe what I actually capable of, they plan everything for my happiness without including my own thought in it, when I talked with them about my passion and dream all they said is
that isn't better than our plan
We know you are better at this than that
If you do that it'll just be trouble, trust us, it's safer this way.
They always tell me to trust them but they doesn't seem to trust my judgment and decision. It's just when their plan turn out to be bad, their trust come out of nowhere, believing that I'm capable to fix their mistake with the excuse of giving me a chance to do my actual thought, when I can't, because my initial thought is to prevent those problem, not fix it. As long as it's align to their plan, they believe that I'm capable of anything, when I just a normal person who have limit. And the worst of all, the way they educate me seems to numb my ability of making decision, making me unable to do something without other person approval.
It's already happening since I'm still a child, and keep turning into difficult situation by time because despite it's depressing me out, I know they did that out of their love.

Im 12. And with severe anxiety, both in social and just general anxiety. I have a huge phobia of sicknesses and mainly throwing up.
And I have to go to the dentist, the bad part is that the phobia of throwing up doesnt really do great when in a place where they shove a camera down your throat to take pictures of your teeth. Especially when you ask the dentists to do it the other way, the way I feel more safe. Only for them to say one more time over and over, Ive only ever done the one where I actually feel safe, ONCE.
And Ive tried to be vocal on how much the thought is crushing me mentally, giving me things like suicidal thoughts on the daily. But even if I use joke or not, they always say its not THAT bad youve done it before. Every time. It feels n like no one is really there for me when Im scared.
Something I would also like to add is, the fact I watched my brother have a meltdown while confessing his mental state to my parents. And he got comforted. But when I decide to show the fact im hurting, my parents choose to push it aside to it being just anxiety. Itll go away soon. And then they forget a whole conversation we just had about how they would try and help me. Only to make things worse.

I must start from the fact that Im from a really rich family. So my parents held a lot of expectations for me, they always say Youre the eldest son, you should make us proud. Or something like that. Im currently a game streamer with around a thousand followers. When I told so to my parents, they were furious, they told me to quit streaming and study more. When I was eleven, I was a genius, but I didnt get into the best school in my country. They said What a disgrace for our family. As for my younger brother, he was the favorite child. My parents spoiled him rotten. Since he was the favorite child, he got whatever he wanted and can do whatever he wants, like making fun of me. And guess what? My parents did nothing, in fact, they let him do ANYTHING to me. And when I talked back, they only said Hes younger than you, let him do what he wants. When they scolded me, they always bring up the fact that Im the eldest son and that theyre my parents.
But today, I have graduated and married. My ties from my old family have already been cut. Im living a happy life now.
The text above is only a story I want to share about me. If you have read until the end, I appreciate your time.

I just realized how much my parents being strict has affected me as a being. With anxiety and not so great social skills, they both have gotten worse over the years and thats when my parents have gotten stricter. I feel as if I have to be perfect and I cant make mistakes. I have panic attacks when my friends wanna hang out and I have to ask my parents. Im very scared of being yelled at or rejection. My parents dont rlly understand. Everytime I have a headache or Im on my butt its never are you okay, Do you wanna talk abt it? Its always making jokes abt me being lazy or scolding me for not doing more than I already have. With the depression and anxiety I deal with daily, it is very hard to stay focused and get as much work done as I would like. My mother has always tried to push me out of my comfort zone but now shes just being naggy when she doesnt understand that these mental illnesses that I deal with make it hard to reach the goals she wants me to achieve. Its always either my phone or Im just being lazy and I need to stop doing things last minute.

I remember hearing the first one. You have a good life, you could be someone dying of cancer. That turned into me eventually replying that I'd rather be dying from cancer than this. And the phone was my escape. I reached out to people on the internet, but there was only so much they could do. I didn't have a therapist and because they blew off my depression I didn't have anyone and my mom isolated me, and I eventually spiraled downwards. I remember having a breakdown because of a toxic boss being on my ass at work. Instead of being supported I was just told to grow up. that's when I started cutting. I started self harming as means of escape or a cry for help and it got worse. I started drinking whenever I could get a hold of alcohol and I cutted more. It wasn't until I had a major breakdown and almost killed myself that they finally realized this was serious and I got the mental help and support I needed, therapy and medication.

I can recognize ALL of these from my own teenage years. I didn't know it was depression though, so when I told my mother I was sad, all I got was: then be more happy and smile. When I got angry: That's not going to help, be happy and smile. That was her solution to ALL of my troubles.
When I tried to talk to my teachers: You're just sensitive. Don't be that.
Needless to say, it's why I struggle to this day. Why I keep having periods with depression, why I have days where I feel sick and the next day are just fine. Worst of all, I don't think that this video would have helped me at all back then, but it's such a good eye opener for how long time I've struggled and that it keeps effecting people into adulthood.
I wish all of you who struggles with depression or any mental illness the very best help and care. You deserve it.

reply

I can relate to a lot of this. Whenever I do talk to them, they always would just say: Everyone your age experiences it. Or Your sister told you that! They would Guilt trip me into watching something with them or doing something with them. They also like to blame me for the way I am. I can't help that I can't stay still or the fact that I am sad. My dad says I am the happiest boy in the world. He only says that he never listens and I have to put on the mask. When I talk about ADHD and how I think I might have it, they say oh your sister told you that, I deal with kids with ADHD, and you don't have it! She doesn't. She goes to a school and goes in a class with people who struggle to listen or understand. Nothing says anything about ADHD, and a lot of kids at my school hide it. Well, have a nice day.

I don't have anyone I can trust and idk if I deserve to be this miserable. Mom says she hates me and insults me my whole life along with everyone around me. Move in with my dad and starts insulting me the same way and everyone says I'm always the victim and never try hard enough. It's always me. I'm so selfish. I ask what it was that I did that they thought was bad but no one tells me so I can't fix it. If I try to be good then I do bad but idk what is bad! I get told I'm improving so I keep trying to do that then eventually I'm bad again. What did I do to deserve being so miserable in my life! My dad thinks I hate him! Idk what I did! He won't tell me! Why am I always looked down on as the issue when I just want help!
reply

Only thing that has been an issue for me is number 2, and that's because they claim they also had the same issue in their teen years, but after a certain age like 16 or 17 they said my phase would be over like every other teenager, or that it depends on the season or that i can't be inside all the time
And in one part i understand what they're trying to do, it's their way of telling me nothing lasts forever, but on the other hand depression won't just go away, it takes time to heal and reduce it with the years, and people that suffer from it due to chemical inbalancw have it worse because they can't fix it besides pills, which in my opinion isn't the best solution but, it's tricky

This video explained why I was so sad when I was ten and up. For some reason I was even scared to get tell them if I had lost something or if there was something on my mind because I waould always say I knew what they were gonna tell me. Its my fault, i shouldnt have lost it and find/ do it yourself. One of the worst things in the world was being compared to the people I knew. They told me to tie my hair so I would look like my prettier better cousin. The last two things that struck hard was when I transferred to a public school my mom told me I should do good in school and I had to b on top no matter what and finally the words, Dont Disappoint me. Oof

When I was a teenager, I tried opening up to my parents about my depression and they did nothing but laugh and dismiss my feelings. Ever since then I have never shared anything with them, and I started to distrust them. Once I moved out, I never spoke to them again. Even till this day I still struggle with depression and I'm less willing to talk to anyone about it. Just like in the video, my parents never let me hang out with my friends growing up. As an adult, I struggle with social interactions, which has definitely caused me to miss out on potential job and relationship opportunities. Now I just have nothing but hate and resentment towards them.

My experience with my parents was awful. Most of the time when l was feeling angry or depressed, they would always blame either my own friends or my phone for the way that l am acting instead of themselves. It doesn't happen as much back then, but whenever it does, l tend to walk away from the yelling and disrespectful comments instead of confronting it. Parents need to understand that their words or actions speaks volumes to thier kids and learn to say they were wrong instead of relying of thier experience as a kid. It's good for parents to do that, but when it's ALL OF THE TIME, it becomes a problem.

I know that feeling of being a stranger in your own house. Yes, Im using word house because thats what my parents place became to me. Ive fought depression probably since I was about 8, though usually viewing it as sadness. Though figuring family would be better off with me dead. Im undiagnosed, thinking maybe its bipolar depression, who knows. 2016 was my worst year. Spent a month, two weeks back to back in September and October highly considering suicide. Even now, I often think of it. My depression has made me gain a lot of weight as I become unmotivated easily

Honestly, all of these things is what my ex did.
I already wasnt in the best state when I met him, he gained my trust, then just used me and didn't give a shit about me.
My mental state just hit rock bottom with him, first time cutting myself and constantly thinking about suicide.
I stayed with him for three years because all I had was him, he isolated me from anything/anyone else and there would be times he would be nice again.
I just wish I would have never taken him back in that first half year.

This hit hard. I know i have depression, but i can't go get a professional diagnosis until I'm 16 since that's where i can get it without them telling my parents since the last time i got suicidal, they were having a go at me because i was making my mum feel like a bad parent. I now constantly fear opening up. The only other time was also disastrous as i wascompared to that of indian girls who have to marry those three times their age. Just don't do bare minimum parenting as it makes the child feel worthless.

I totally believe that family can drive. you to suicide. and I think as a human being you have to save yourself. and get the hell away from. your family. I'm so tired of people saying. well that's your family. yes I know that But I also know that family are abusive, verbally, physically, negative and just ignorant. and I described my family and getting the F away. is the best thing to do to live your life in peace. you have to let go of everybody in your life who is not good for you. toxic

I have been struggling with depression for along time. I remeber trying multiple times to tell my mom and dad. you dont know what depression is, if you try to hurt yourself ill (don't remember the last part, but it was a threat. and yet once my brother said he was depressed my mom instantly jumped to help him. for me though (around 2022 when i brought it up again) it was put off countless times. i am luckily finally in therapy. but it still hurts alot.

my parent have homeschooled my for my entier life, i have zero freinds, and most of the only people i'm around are very transphobic and homophobic, and i'm trans and gay. haveing negative emotions has always been a 'bad' thing in my mom's eyes, and i am always supposted to be happy, i'm a teenager and now i don't even know how to show real emotions without suger coating everything, so everyone thinks i'm fine, but i just don't know if i can do this

TW: self harm attempts
Im on the spectrum, so communiction was always hard for me.
When I was in AP Psych and learning the basics of clinical depression, I started realizing that I was depressed.
Then when I brought it to my mom's attention, she was very dismissive, stating that I wasnt depressed, her mom was, and she had a reason to be depressed
Lo and behold, a few years later I attempted suicide when I had a burnout in college.

If it's any help to those that have parents that do the comparing, you could try to say this:
_So what? If they're good at x/do x better than me, then good for them. That's their life, not mine. No one's the same, so you shouldn't project that on me. _
I don't know if it works well or at all, because my parents are supportive and reasonable, and I've never really been compared that much in hindsight. You may have to adapt it accordingly.

reply

Well this is pretty accurate, worst part is that no matter what you do not once do you get a I'm proud of you even if you are one of the top in classes, getting honors rewards and god forbbid your grades drop once if you have abusive parents, I still remember hearing stories of how many were shocked that one time we went swimming at he beach and my back was covered in whip-lashes marks from a bearing with wires for failing an exam.
reply

I always get shut down by my parents the moment I'm not quite acting like everything is fine and dandy, in fact my mother even starts snapping at me and getting grumpy at me the second I'm not feeling okay. My dad likes to constantly ask me if I'm ok, but every single time I've said that I'm not he just goes oh and then also starts getting annoyed at me after a while if I'm not showing signs of improvement after being asked.
reply

When I had depression, or just generally ever tried to tell my parents anything serious they just treated it like a joke and waved me off. Then I just stopped ever going to them when I needed stuff. Honestly completely ruined my relationship and respect for my parents. Childhood is tough when you don't feel like the most important people care, and nobody should have to go through that.

I am so lucky that I have such great and loving parents especially when I have disabilities like autism visual impairment seizures and even being tested for ADHD soon and my parents have always supported me and loved me and got so happy when they finally found out how much I could see when I was a toddler since they never knew it all if I could be even almost completely blind when I was a baby
