What Would Happen If We Drained the Mediterranean Sea? Hello! I am aware this is an old vid, but it uses a lot of b-roll of Mono Lake in California, notably the Tufa Towers, which I think is misleading. Those towers are not made of salt, and they are in no way salt deposits. While yes Mono lake is very salty, the lakes tufa towers(the ones in the b-roll) are calcium carbonate and are from the alkaline ph of the lake as well as natural springs under the surface. While alien and beautiful (absolutely visit if you have the chance, I think it is a bit misleading to include it as b-roll when speaking about a drying ocean.

Interesting how Sacramento CA goes completly underwater and no mention of Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego are not mentioned. Even though Sacramento is locate just over 100 miles in land with some parts in between having elevations well over 10 meters and the oters are costal cities.

If sea-level rise becomes a real problem, we should bring seawater to the heartland of Antartica where it can freeze. (salt-water freezes at minus 4. Building an ice-plateau up to 4 - 5 km high. The water in the oceans will drop by 40 - 50 m.

The scary part is this has happened before, and will happen again (plate tectonics, which are slowly killing the strait, will eventually turn the Mediterranean Sea into a mountain range that will make the Himalayas look like Appalachia)

Kk sounds like makes more sense to build over it or floating houses which yea already exisit but maybe in the future if we need more land this will become more practical and common place

Fun fact, in The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, you have to go down to get to the Gerudo Desert in the Southeast. The Mediterranean being completely drained resembles that in a way.

It would be so cool if they really drained it and 5 or 10 years later they bombed out the dam and flood the Mediterranean again - just wanna have the satisfaction of the flood hahaha

It would cause major droughts and desertification. Earth is a delicate balance of 7: 3 ocean to land ratio. If land increases on the expense of sea, life would be at risk.
reply

why would you, it's a low point so it will fill back up with rain so any crops grown will be flooded and ruined along with any towns/houses.

So the Chinese built the Three Rivers Gorges Dam instead, and passed off a change in weather patterns as -climate change-.

This of course was NOT the idea that Sorgel had as he only wanted to partially drain the Mediterranean. (And other seas.

Imagine the ruins and history they-d find if they drained the Mediterranean enough to see that much coast line

What Would Happen If We Drained the Mediterranean Sea? ===> Turkey will claim all this new land as their own!

what if the mediterranean sea became a lake?
countries that only have a coastline in the mediterranean sea: ---

If you want more land without any obstructions then just make a few tidal estuaries on the former coastal areas.

It would kill most of the european heritage, because all the N from africa would flood our holy land!
