An Airplane Ran Out of Fuel at 41, 000 Feet. Here's What Happened Next This brought to mind a near series of catastrophes that occurred to a major US carrier in the 80s I worked for. A faulty software change to the floating point logic that governed fuel use was installed in the system that predicted fuel use in flight plans, and planes throughout the US were reporting running out of fuel far short of their destinations. Fortunately, they all made alternate sites, the problem was identified, and the software removed. One of the scariest scenarios I experienced in my 34 years there.

I fuelled airplanes in Canada for a living for a few years. The fuel team made the initial mistake, but the ultimate responsibility is on the pilots to sign off on the fuel level. There are like 15 guages that indicate fuel level, pressure, weight etc. it was his mistake. However, mistakes happen and he did deserve an honor for saving lives. This is the best Canadian explanation I can think of.

They failed to mention he side slipped the plane to get it to drop altitude drastically without picking up a ton of speed. A maneuver that-s not taught or recommended for big commercial planes. Furthermore they put other pilots in the same scenario and none of them landed the plane. They all crashed

What about the enroute mandatory fuel checks? They obviously did not conduct any. In an era where all planning was paper based, that's criminal and negligent. I really think you should refrain from offering your advice and opinion on such issues. The guys should have been suspended from flying!

Could have mentioned that Gimli is on the shore of the 11th biggest lake in the world, which the pilot had to navigate over/around. It is absolutely huge and has it's own weather system which I'm sure made things even more complicated. I live directly across the lake from Gimli.

In my first seven years of life, I grew up with Air Canada because I lived in San Diego and my grandparents lived in Toronto, so I went on that airline every time I went to Toronto. The classic design of Air Canada now gives me nostalgia

Someone please explain why doesn't a plane have an instrument to measure the fuel and tell them the rage. Please explain. A plane costs a ton of money. People who build planes, are they like ok in the head? Like they need some help?

Watched the whole second half of this video paralyzed, with mouth agape, as I'd never heard of this and was riveted in disbelief and suspense. Amazing. Thrilling action flick, heroic pilot movie plot, for sure!

Fun fact: Two kids actually out ran the plane after they decided to go the track length not seeing the plane then seeing it biking there way back surviving and not getting destroyed by a plane.

So picture this. The plane-s falling die to a lack of fuel. Then suddenly everybody on board feels the place come to a strong stop in the air. They glance out the window and see Superman.

Legend has it that Pearson also saved a baby rabbit from an entire pack of wolves in the Appalachian Mountains with only a spoon and one arm broken. his bravado had no limit -

Not a word about the side slip manouver, which was the main thing that enabled them to land safely. and created the Legend of the Gimli glider. Crack of shit this one LLL.

This might be the worst possible choice in background music you could have possibly made. It's so annoying, loud and unfitting. I get 5 min crafts vibes from this

I always make sure to make eye contact and thank my pilots after every safe flight, but in this case, I already know I'd breach the cockpit and kiss them.

You forgot about the kids that were biking on the runway/drag strip only to see a giant red jumbo jet racing towards them. They also were unharmed.

Great video, but do a little homework: Imperial units are British and, especially in liquid volumes, are different from U. S. SAE units.

Imagine have to do math in a short period of time to save 61 people lives in a plane 14 km high with no fuel and both engines are off.

Air Canada flight 143 ran out of fuel at 41, 000 feet, the pilot had no other choice other than to do a side slip.
