The World's Strangest Borders Pt 6: Wacky US States So its NOT just the British private people with their homes who are fktrded when it comes to the positions of fences and borders.
Its all humans.
Ive seen other videos about Cyprus, Brunei, Ireland, Sweden/Finland, France/Netherlands, Sudan/Egypt etc. etc.
Bloody hell!
When my sisters neighbours falsely accused them having their garden/yard fence in the wrong place, my sister and brother-in-law just gave it to them.
They quite rightly didnt want to fight over an irrelevantly tiny strip of land, even though it was an obviously false accusation and they had to disassemble my nephews shed, move it 20 cm and reassemble it.
Why cant more people be sensible?

My now-deceased friend Don Faber wrote a book titled The Toledo War: The First Michigan-Ohio Rivalry, about the border dispute. I had some awareness of the strange border situation with Liberty and Ellis Islands, but appreciate the more detailed information here. I think the state of New Jersey deserves more respect than it gets.

There's also a town called -Point Roberts- that is in what should be part of Canada. When the UK gave the Oregon Territory to the US, they did a straight line, then it would go down to a strait, which then caused the San Juan Island dispute. A small piece of land was given to America, and caused the peice of land to be American.

Why does it matter what property belongs to which state? We're all part of the same country! Maybe state tax revenue is at stake, but come on, why would anyone start a war that needs to be decided by the Supreme Court? I didn't care how much land my neighbors claimed on my deed. To me, it meant less grass to mow.

Not really a weird -border- but Virginia extends further west than West Virginia. And the westernmost point in Virginia is closer to 9 other state capitals (Raleigh NC, Columbia SC, Atlanta GA, Montgomery AL, Nashville TN, Frankfort KY, Charleston WV, Columbus OH, Indianapolis IN) than its own (Richmond.

Well, as long as they remain UNITED states, it doesn't really matter. It's all just a single country.
I find the borders of states, provinces, prefectures, etc, do not play a role of any kind on day to day life.
Maybe the US is different, but then I have to ask - how united are your states anyway?

Tge court battle for New Jersey gaining/losing land went the rather pedantic way. The bank of the island/river was always going to change, so its difficult to avoid such reclaimation. or loss to erosion. Court should have said the border has to be wherever the bank is at the moment.

I live in Colorado and was born in Colorado! When I was about seven or eight years old my dad told me that Colorado-s border wasn-t straight/not a perfect rectangle, and it blew my mind, seriously.
My dad said that he-s going to tell my kids about what my reaction was.

I've been to the Lost Peninsula in Michigan. It's a bunch of private houses/marinas, two restaurants, and a small sign saying -Lost Peninsula. - That's it. Since it's not much, it doesn't surprise me that few people know of it
reply

This is why Michigan has been secretly preparing an Ohio invasion force to retake Toledo, saving the Mud Hens, and still keeping the UP because Wisconsin and Michigan have a non-aggression pact and we both hate the Buckeyes 8>D
reply

And the Upper Peninsula was taken from the territory of Wisconsin (not a state yet at the time. And now imagine the US collapses and the independent state of Wisconsin goes on war against Michigan claiming the UP.

So Delaware is an actual state, interesting. I had always thought Delaware was invented by large corporations so that they could give their headquarters fictitious Delaware addresses to avoid state taxes.

Maybe this is in the extended cut, but I thought I'd mention:
- By Eppley Airfield in Omaha, the Nebraska-Iowa border indents weirdly
- New York and Rhode Island share a water border

reply

I was just explaining to my mom a few days ago that if you are standing on Liberty Island, you are in New York, but if you dip one foot in the water, then that foot is in New Jersey.

Michigan and Ohio -Best Friends-. More like Moongoose's and Cobra's. Also we sometimes regret not giving Michigan Toledo. Seems like Michigan has a monopoly on crap cities.

When I was a kid and flew over the Midwest, I used to think those squares and rectangles of different shades of brown and green down below were states.

I was hoping that you would have delved into the reason why Virginia has that portion of the peninsula with Maryland.

This video shows the reason I've never had any political ambitions, I was never psychotic enough to be a politician.

Lol tbh as someone from SE Michigan, Toledo might as well be a part of MI as much as we interact with them -
reply

Ellis Island is in New Jersey. But typical New York, they want to claim everything profitable, as theirs.
